Finally finished the Mariners Compass quilt that I designed and hand quilted. It is 107 inches square. At times I didn’t think I was ever going to finish it while working on too many other projects. It was on the quilting frame for 11 months! The whole quilt from piecing to quilting took about 220 hours. Here I am with my quilt, my friend Julie hid behind the quilt so as not to get her photo taken

(I just now tried to take a close up photo of the quilting stitches but couldn’t get one because of the black quilt, the red stitches won’t show up on a photo, I guess I do not have a good enough camera. The quilting is not fancy stitch design, mainly just straight lines in all the borders)

Absolutely amazing!! I can’t imagine doing anything so difficult. Would love to see it in person. I’ll bet the quilting is divine. Did you use black thread for quilting? Congratulations!
I quilted it with red thread and it is mainly straight line quilting, I should post a close up of the quilting lines.
Oh Karen, that is just BEAUTIFUL!!!! I look forward to seeing pictures of the quilting. Congradulations on finally finishing this work of art.

Wow!!! What more can be said about that gorgeous quilt!
Beautiful!
Hi Karen – I’m coming from your hubby’s blog. I’ve been here before too but have been sporadic. But I had to come and see your quilt – it is fabulous! I bet the red quilting stitches look great. Too bad we can’t see them but I just know they look sharp! You do such lovely and detailed work!
Wow Karen, what a beautiful quilt! it was worth all those hours wasn’t it?
This quilt is absolutely beautiful. It would so fit into the Black And White Quilt Challenge! Absolutely stunning!
yes it was worth all the hours put into making it Sue and Jackie I haven’t heard about a Black and White Quilt Challenge, you would have to fill me in on that.
That looks lovely. I am here thanks to a link from Mike’s blog. I am not surprised that you get more traffic and comments than he does!
WOW!!!
Stunning.I love the colors. What a beautiful design I have enjoyed your progress on this quilt for a while. Hope I get to see it in person some day. And how will you use it? Will you enter it in a quilt show?
thanks everyone – rumuser Mike has told me about you – nice to meet you
I told him what you said.
Jan it sure took awhile to get it done didn’t it! For now it will go on our bed unless one of our daughters wants it, but I will enjoy it for awhile first – no I hadn’t thought of entering it in a show – I always find too many mistakes in my own work and to me they stand out! Maybe one day.
Breathtakingly Beautiful!!!! Thank you for sharing.
The quilt is really beautiful, and good motivation for me to continue on my UFO’s. Thanks for sharing.
OMG, Karen, your quilt is stunningly beautiful from workmanship to color choices! It is so well done. This one should be entered in the AQS Show in Paducah — it’s definitely a winner! Congratulations!
Debbie

Spectacular! It’s absolutely gorgeous!
I love your Mariners Compass, the colours are striking and you must feel a tremendous sense of achievement having finally managed to complete it.
It’s beautiful, Mom!
Karen, that is such a stunning quilt. What a great job you did on it.
What a incredible quilt, it’s incredible! Lots of work but surelly you are very happy now you’ve finished! Thank you for having a look at my blog hope to see you soon again. Warm regards from Spain
Stunning, just stunning……
Oh please, you need to bring that quilt to the Quilt show in Paducah, Ky next April. It looks like a winner to me! I grew up in Paducah and work there now. Have you ever been to the Quilt Show here?
Thanks everyone – the quilt I must say really looks good from the distance of that photo
but close up there are mistakes, not good enough for Paducah I’m afraid! All the points are not all the same, and little mistakes here and there that I’m sure the judges would notice! I did not make it with the intention of entering anywhere and so did not correct mistakes. I quilt to enjoy not to be judged
Wow! That is just beautiful !
from one Karen to another – thank you!
I saw it when you first put the quilt on-line. I looked for it today but couldn’t find it.. Glad you sent me the site. I am like the others. You should have entered it in the contest. Everybody makes mistakes so I am sure they would take that in consideration. Make another on with no mistakes.!!!!! Next time we will be saying TOLD YOU SO THAT YOU WERE WINNER. Dawn
