I finished the quilt top last night that I have been designing and making as I go. The last border had just about 200 hundred leaves on it — why oh why did I ever decide to do that border pattern? I never thought I was going to finish it. I had about 20 or so leaves left to do yesterday. I thought — ok this is it, finish it tonight!! So I put on a movie– – I sew best while “watching/listening” to tv for some reason. Normally I put on a movie or tv show that I have already seen then I am mainly listening while I sew and glancing up now and then to see. I showed a picture of this quilt on
November 25th if you want to look back in the blog you can. Right now it is sitting in water soaking all the glue out of it. I do this until the water comes out clear. I like to get all of the glue out of smaller quilts before I quilt them if I can. It doesn’t work as well with large quilts as you have to let them soak and then find some place large enough to lay them out to dry (can’t put them in the spin cycle or dryer as they might start to unravel!). There is no rule saying you have to soak the glue out this is just something that I like to do if I can. I used only scraps for this quilt – so I did make a little head way on the stash for this year. I think I will start making some scrap quilts though using larger pieces – like squares in squares or something like that to get some of this used up.
I’m not sure when I will start to quilt this quilt. Right now I have 3 quilt tops finished waiting to be quilted – I only hand quilt as that is what I like. One day if I can no longer manage hand quilting then I will go to the machine quilting. The smaller quilt tops will one at a time come with us when we are traveling in the small motor home (I say small so you realize we do not have one of those big ones that people live in, this is a 25 ft. motor home, no slides, very modern but small). I will baste a small quilt in advance and bring my small hoop with me and it will be ready to work on while we are traveling and staying at numerous campgrounds along the way.
Yesterdays question was kind of strange I thought. The 4 multiple choice answers were Garden Maze – Lattice – Binding – Sashing. The answer was Binding.
Lattice and Sashing are basically the same thing, here is a link explaining that. If you read it carefully you will see that the two words are the same thing – ways to join quilt blocks together. The Garden Maze is a quilt block, click and you can see what the pattern is if you do not know. The binding finishes the quilt so I guess that is why it doesn’t actually belong in the same category. Again I thought the question was a little strange and at first I thought the answer was Garden Maze until I read the question more carefully.
Now on to the next question!
Question # 6
Which of the following quilt patterns is not thought of as in vogue in the 1930’s?
A- Drunkards Path
B- Grandmothers Flower Garden
C- Double Wedding Ring
D- Dresden Plate
I’m surprised to see I have actually made all of these, B & C I have only made once but the other two I have made quite a few times actually, especially the Drunkards Path there are so many variations and combinations you can do with that one.
Here is a photo of one of the Double Wedding Ring Quilts that I made. I tell about how I made it at the link and close up photo’s are there as well.
