scraps2Bonnie from Quiltville’s Quips & Snips offers us all so many ideas for scrap quilts that I thought I would experiment this evening with some of her ideas.  I have a lot of small boxes that are meant to hold photo’s or video tapes (stripe box in photo) that I use for storing my scrap fabric.  I get these at Hobby Lobby in a colorful array of colors – this helps to decorate my quilting area and is also a good way to store my scraps.   A lot of scraps can fit in these boxes.  I cut my scraps into strips or squares and press them and into the box they go.   Just to see how much fabric I could fit in one of these boxes I just now emptied one box and took my shelf yardage that is folded in 2 yard cuts.  I really only thought 3 of them would fit – I was amazed 5 pieces fit in a box – that is 10 yards.  I am amazed because then I looked at my shelves and realized I have a whole heck of a lot more fabric then I really thought I had!!!  I have to get busy and make more quilts. :)

I have 7 of these boxes full of scraps so that means I have about 70 yards of scrap faboxesbric 70 x $8.00 a yard and I have $560.00 worth of scraps – oh my God!! and that is not counting the pieces that are almost fat quarters on the opposite side of the room — or the folded pieces of 1 yard cuts, 2 yard cuts and the 5 partial bolts of fabric on the shelf.  When I look at how I have it stored it really doesn’t look like that much — really – cross my heart.  :)

I got side tracked – anyhow with these scraps that I have been working on this evening I will be following through with this project tomorrow.  I will cut some white pieces from my stash to go with this colorful arrangement of scraps and make some blocks.  I will keep you up to date with how it looks.

Question #9 was Where might one find the Language of Flowers?

The answer believe or not same as yesterday – all of the above – Baltimore Album Quilts, Crazy Quilts, and Applique Quilts.  We all know what Baltimore Album quilts are — beautiful and a lot of hBaltimore Album quiltard work!  Here is an excellent link for Baltimore Album quilts – the whole site is wonderful and has an area where you can click on blocks and enlarge to see it well.

Crazy quilts we are familiar with as well and with all the wonderful stitch work that goes into them.  You can add details in them as well which is why they do are in the category of Language of Flowers.

Here is a link to the history of crazy quilts where you can find this example.

Crazy Quilts - history

There are many applique quilts in the quilting world as well and a high percentage of them have flowers all over them!  I have made quite a few myself as I know many of you have as well.  Here is one that I did about 12 years ago or so.  springtime
