Question #8 was what do the following have in common: Echo, Stipple, Meander, & Crosshatch? I thought it was very easy as I’m sure you all did too. The answer is: they are all quilting patterns — now it was possible to read the question wrong but these are all quilting stitching patterns – I think maybe it should have been worded like that don’t you?

Here is an example of echo quilting. It is used a lot on Hawaiian quilting and applique quilting.
This is an example of stipple quilt stitching. Most of the time this is just done by machine – but believe it or not a lot of us hand quilters at times do it as well – mostly in small areas not an entire quilt, but I have used it in some fairly large areas myself. I could not find a good photo of meander stitching and everything that I did find about it says it is the same as stipple – I do not know if that is right.
Cross hatch stitching is what I used on this baby quilt – all the straight lines crossing over each other is cross hatch. Very easy – just make sure you draw your lines on straight. These can be a half inch apart, an inch, two inches – whatever you want depending on how much stitching you want to put in to your quilt.===============================================================

Actually, I think you are right in the first place. These terms were all “quilting patterns” since quilting as I understand it is really the act of stitching through the quilt sandwich. Everything else would be called “piecing or appliqueing”, don’t you think? I have always been told that it is not really a quilt until it is quilted (that is, stitched through the layers of backing, batting, and pieced or appliqued top). It might be a “quilt top” if not sandwiched but it is not a quilt until “quilted”. Wonder if others see this the same way?
I gotta read more books on quilting….no no, I gotta remember what I read when I read books on quilting.
This was informative. Nice…

Actually meandering is bigger and looser and stippling is the tight small version of it. Some people call all of it stippling, which isn’t correct in my opinion. Both are patterns that don’t cross over a previous line of stitching.
I agree with Karen L. that quilting is the stitching the holds the layers together, and everything else is piecing or applique which inclued collage.

I don’t do machine quilting so I am only going by examples given on web pages for what was described as both. As far as quilting patterns – sometimes I refer to that as block patterns and to me the two sets of words could be interchangeable – my opinion only. Yes I agree quilt stitching is what holds the quilt together and piecing and applique makes the top. And yes it isn’t a quilt until it is quilted.
