Don’t you just hate it when you think you have spring, then all of a sudden it is winter again, then spring and then WHAT! it is April 5th right now– we have flower buds all over the place, the redbud blooms are turning into a leafy tree, the dogwood has the gorgeous white flowers all over it, the clematis have buds, the rose bushes have buds, the lily of the valleys are popping up out of the ground and the hostas have begun to sprout out of the ground as well. And now on the news they say that Monday night into Tuesday morning we will drop to 23 degrees and the wind will make it feel like 14!!!
Today I will spend part of the day (at 60 degrees) preparing for covering up plants tomorrow afternoon as the cold front comes into our area. I am using every single plant pot I can find out in the workshop and see what I have, all the plastic containers as well and bath towels and sheets will be put to work as well. I have some newspaper and they will be crumpled up and stuffed around tender plants and a pot put on top of them in hopes that they will stay warm. When I run out of crumpled newspaper dish clothes and rags will be put to use. I guess it hasn’t been a bad idea to keep stacking up all those plastic pots from the nursery when I get plants – I always know they will come in handy for something. I was just going to throw some of them away the other day thinking I had more than enough – now I kind of figure I don’t have enough! Oh well, some will survive and that counts.
I know some people might just let it go, but I love all these plants and how they look in the spring and I have been looking forward to the pretty flowers. So I will take the time to try to save some of them.

Karen, here in Ontario, we don’t usually put out tender plants till May 10th on a good year, and the 24th for all other years.
In southern Ontario, we are a bit more lucky with putting out, but up at the cottage, we are careful even after the 24th of May.
We are having the same weather as you for the next couple of days, almost winter weather.
It’s a chore being committed to gardening in the spring. We just want the flowers to bloom!

Oh I feel for you Karen, your yard was looking so pretty. I hope all your efforts prove fruitful when the cold front passes.

almost all of my plants are ones that come back every year so they come up when they are ready and that is usually in March no matter what the temperature is! I only buy a little bit of annuals to put out for extra color – I got those on sale last week so didn’t spend much, I won’t bother to try to cover those up unless I have enough things to cover after I do the plants I really want to see bloom.
I know all about this, Karen! A cold snap can really set the plants back quite a bit! I hope your efforts save all your pretty perennials!
Enjoy your Sunday evening!
Hugs,
Mary Ann

Me, too. Today in South AL it was 81 and tomorrow night we are expecting 32 and 28 on Tuesday night. I can’t tell you how much I don’t like the cold.

I’m with you Karen, I try and stick with perennials, annuals really increase the cost of gardening if you like to do it quite a bit. I hope this isn’t as bad as that nasty freeze that hit a year or two ago!
I planted bare root strawberries yesterday, and I’m thinking I may toss a blanket over them tonight. I’ll go cut whatever flowers are blooming and enjoy them in a vase. I sure hope it isn’t cold enough to permanently damage our new fruit trees

well we didn’t get the freeze last night and I really need to uncover the plants today so they can get the sunlight they should have but I will cover them again tonight they really expect it tonight, last night was a maybe. Yesterday I cut more daffodils and all of the tulips that came up and have them in a vase to enjoy. I didn’t cover up the strawberry plants and I wonder if I should, only a couple blossoms on them right now. I hope your fruit trees make it CJ. Two years ago we had a really bad freeze didn’t we.
