I received an award today from my good blogging friend Astrid in Mauritius which is an island in the Indian Ocean.  Astrid originally from Norway has lived on the island for awhile now.  Although we are fairly new friends we have enjoyed each others blogs since we found them.  I need to select 8 blogging friends to pass this on to so it will take me a 3652730524_5195407c84couple days to get this on my blog.  Thank you Astrid!  Astrid takes wonderful photos of the island and puts them on her blog along with her quilting photo’s.

I made more progress on my “Circle of Cactus” only one more white flower left to do!  I will be glad to be done with these 5 main blocks and I’m ready to get them sewn together soon.

I also got one more block of “Insanity” quilted, F-7 I really need to try to quilt more3652731588_b1c67e7d2e in the heat of the day and not sit around reading, but I have been in a reading phase – I tend to get in spells where I read more than I quilt.

I won’t even discuss the weather today – other than to say it continues to be hot in the 90’s!

  2. I too go on reading jags…I’ve partially solved it by listening to audio books while quilting or appliqueing…librivox.org has free in-the-public-domain books for download right to i-tunes.

Your Cactus block looks beautiful…I’m curios-I always baste everything and then applique as you said you usually do but this block you were doing by the piece-which do you like better?

    Congrats! on your award.

  3. The christmas cactus is coming along very nicely Karen. I don’t blame you for not wanting to do much hand quilting. Even though you use a frame it still has to be a bit warm to work on it, besides, sitting on the porch, reading a book and drinking lemonade, as you mentioned yesterday, sounds very relaxing.

  4. We are FINALLY going to have summer-it’s suppose to be 80 today and through the weekend! It’s been so gray, rainy and chilly. Also good weather for quilting as you sure couldn’t work in the flowerbeds! Love to see what you are working on. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hi Karen, I know exactly what you mean about reading and quilting. I used to read 2 or 3 books a week last summer, then I started quilting in the fall and did that in every free minute all winter long. Now that it’s getting nicer out, i want to sit in the sunshine and read instead of listening to the constant purr of the machine, so I’ve a) started to read again and b) switched to a bit of hand quilting. Luckily just a small quilt, so it’s not too hot on the lap!

Love your Dear Jane quilt by the way, you’ve almost got me at a point where I want to start my own, but I’m not sure I’d ever finish it…

    Cheers,
    Christine

  6. I haven’t had a reading spell in a long time, but I used to have them so I know what you mean. The Circle of Cactus is coming along nicely.
I really admire you for hand quilting your DJ…very impressive!

I don’t know how hot is was yesterday, but let’s just say that when I finally got home I had to strip off my clothes and put comfy cooler ones on! I really don’t like summer!

  9. Miri I have found doing this block by glue basting just a little at a time that I like it – normally I will glue baste the whole design down and then get started but a lot of the times the pieces get very wrinkled by time I get to them. Now if I was traveling and bringing it with me then I would glue baste the whole thing down first. Of course doing just a little at time means I need to keep my table top clear of junk so I have room to keep the plastic overlay handy.
