in quilts
Since finishing my “Insanity” Dear Jane quilt I have not been very busy. No photos to share either! I have quilted just a little on the Christmas Baltimore Album quilt. I have mainly been working on the 6th Baltimore Bliss block. About halfway through the block I decided I did not like some of it and changed the design a little — nothing major just little changes. I might be done with this block tomorrow. If I do I will show it and how the six blocks look together.
When I get done with these Baltimore Bliss blocks I will sew them together in some kind of design to be a child’s size quilt. I’m really not sure if it will be put with sashing and set on point or just sashing and not on point. I also need to put my Dutch Treat blocks together in some way. I haven’t decided for sure on that one what style I want. I have 38 blocks finished I believe — I had enough fabric for the whole quilt, so I have a lot of yardage left over that could be used in other quilts so I want to do something with that quilt soon. I guess for this upcoming year I need to get done with these quilt tops and then get busy quilting!!
I notice a lot of quilters that keep blogs put a list on their side bar of what quilts they are working on and what the status of those quilts are through out the year. I’m starting to wonder if that would motivate me some what. That will be something to think of in these last weeks of the year 2009. Does keeping track of your projects help you get them done?
We have had a cold front come through our state this week. The weekend was nice as could be and Monday morning brought a chill in the air – I think today we had a high of 43 and yesterday the high was first thing in the morning and kept dropping throughout the day. I actually don’t mind the weather getting a little cooler at this time of the year – we have a short winter. It is kind of nice to get the sweaters out and the heavier sweatshirts. I just might be able to use that scarf I knitted soon!!
I have gotten so many e mails and comments on my quilt – I have tried to answer them all but I feel I most likely have missed some. Thanks to all of you for the comments. It is very encouraging to quilters to hear praise from other quilters – especially when I know some of you do this as a job and are quilt instructors and designers. Making the entire Dear Jane by hand takes a lot of time and patience so if you are making one just remember Jane Stickle did not make her quilt in a hurry – she took the entire Civil War period to make it — hang in there and one day you will have a finished quilt. Jane’s quilt was not perfect – she has plenty of crooked pieces and so do I – not all my points meet and neither did hers
but as we all say – “it is finished” and that is what counts the most LOL. I did not aim for perfection – I wanted the challenge and boy did I get it!
this corner piece had the most pieces in it - 74 total.
this is the corner piece that Jane Stickle on her original quilt signed and indicated how many pieces were in the total quilt. I will be making a label for the back of my quilt over the next week or so and get my label on the back like I normally do.
These pictures show the quilting a little bit better then the photo from yesterday. These photos also show how the batting shrinks up when you use 100% cotton batting. By washing and drying a quilt in the dryer using cotton batting your quilt will take on the appearance of a antique quilt. I very much wanted that look for this quilt although it is the same batting I use for almost all of my quilts – I just love the “old” look that it gives.
The journey is over! I am FINISHED with this project that took me 4 years and 9 months to make. Of course I didn’t actually work on it the whole time, I took months off while working on other projects at times. I actually finished piecing it March 15 of 2008 and it sat waiting patiently for me to finish quilting another quilt that was on the frame for almost a year! I put it on my quilting frame and started quilting it on February 23 of this year. The “Insanity” began on February 23 of 2005, I finished it on November 13, 2009. Today I got up the nerve to wash it and throw it in the dryer. I have used 100% cotton batting (quilters dream) . I like the crinkly antique look and the batting did justice to the quilt in my opinion. I did the quilt totally by hand including the binding. The completed work took me 645 hours and 30 minutes from start to finish. Out of that time it took 141 hours and 25 minutes to hand quilt it. So you can see it really takes more time to hand piece this quilt than it does to quilt it!. I believe if I figured right it took me 505 hours and 5 minutes to piece this baby
. I tried to keep an accurate total of my time but I’m sure I forgot now and then to write down the time. The quilt has 4,928 pieces in it. I used King Tut variegated cotton thread to quilt.
my Dear Jane "Insanity" click on the photo and it will bring you to a larger size. If you click on the photo again it should bring you in for a close up.
My box arrived from the Fat Quarter Shop. I am really pleased with all of these pre-cut squares. They will not get worked on for awhile as I need to finish the Dear Jane, Insanity first. I think I am going to make a charm quilt with a bunch of circles on squares – maybe alternate a gray fabric with a white fabric. All of these colors will look good on those backgrounds – the dark ones on white fabric and the light ones on gray fabric. I have a piece of gray put aside that I had not found a project for – I have some white but don’t know if I have enough so I will have to measure when the time comes to start and see what I have or possibly use a combination of whites – that normally works out good.

I was going to try to find some fall color to share but every where that I had seen nice color at the other day had fallen to the ground — where there was a pretty tree there was no place to stop and take a photo of it at. I ended up going to the walking trail for a walk today and brought the camera with me to the trail this is at the Bona Dea Trail on the edge of town, it is a bird/animal sanctuary. There was some color but not a lot of it. I took the walk that goes around the back area where the swamp is it is about a mile and a quarter loop. Here are some photos.

the little building in the distance is the bird blind if you go inside of it, it overlooks the swamp and you are hiden from the birds and sometimes get lucky and get some good photos - I didn't get any birds but here is a turtle
another part of the trail - a little fall color here
this photo is from the bird blind at 3 this afternoon - it wasn't real sunny today but a nice comfortable day for a walk - around 62 degrees I think.
I think I will get my Moda Box of Sampler squares tomorrow or the next. I’m looking forward to seeing them! And then of course I will need to figure out how to use them – what design ect. I love charm quilts and this will make one perfectly. I will post a photo when they arrive so you can all see what they look like! (Have you all noticed the price of fabric going up over the last two years! I know it is still more inexpensive here in the states then over seas. I wouldn’t even want to think of paying what you all pay in other countries)
I have gotten 2 sides of the scallops on “Insanity” finished – give me about 2 or 3 more days and I just might be finished with it. I have barely touched any other project other than the Christmas quilt which I have worked on quilting a little. Even though it will be sad in a way to have finished this quilt it will be a relief also!!
It continues to be so nice outside – a little cooler today but still very nice. I sat outside for awhile this morning watching Mike work a little outside before he left for work. I skipped working on the flowers this morning but I was clearing up some of the building supplies. Tomorrow maybe back to a little work on the flower beds or the fall clutter of leaves on the ground! So many leaves. I should take the camera with me tomorrow when I run into town to get my hair cut. I should go take some photos of what is left of the fall color. We do still have some trees with color. We do not have a lot of them left in our yard though.
The binding is done on “Insanity” !! And now the quilting begins on the scallops. I wish I had thought of this before I took it off of the frame! They did look rather empty. Here are two photos of the beginning of the quilting on the scallops.

And the other photo, this is as far as I have gotten! A way to go still
Today – another great day for November! Hit 71 degrees out here by 11 this morning I had the windows open! how great is that. We worked outside for awhile this morning before Mike left for work. I am continuing on the flower bed digging out plants and replanting in other areas of the yard while Mike is finishing up on the patio section of the deck. Hopefully the work will get done on the deck/patio this weekend – we will see – I think we need to pick up a little more flat pavers (flat brick like rocks) and I need to pick up some more dirt – raised beds here – the soil is so rocky I have too hard of a time to dig in it. I would say if we had a harvest it is rocks!! they pop up out of no where!!
I picked up the paint for the bathroom and this time I made sure to look at the color better than I did the first time for the kitchen. I hope to get started painting in there in the next couple of days. I do not need to do the ceiling and if I use the taller of the two step ladders then I won’t need to reach my arms up over my head therefore not bothering my neck! The tricks we learn to get around medical problems
I am going to paint really slow and only do one wall at a time a little each day – it doesn’t matter if it takes me a week or more! It will get done.
Now I need to share a link that a internet friend of mine - Joyce from northern Arkansas (she doesn’t have a blog) shared with me – here is a Dear Jane finished – it has a different look to it. Go to this link to see the photo – isn’t it great? This quilt is by Julia in Perth, Western Australia – yes we Dear Jane fanatics are from all over the world!!
Julia what a great quilt you made and how original with the applique in the center – I wish I had thought of something like that!
I now have 3 sides of the binding sewed down on “Insanity.” I hope to finish the binding within the next two days and then I will start to do the final quilting that I decided to do on the scallops. I’m not sure how long the quilting will take but it shouldn’t take a real long time. I still believe that I will be done by Thanksgiving.
I got a little quilting done on the Christmas quilt this morning but I have not done much on that quilt. I need to get out my box of patterns that I have printed out for the Baltimore Bliss quilt and pick out the next block. I had been moving a long really well on those blocks until I took the Dear Jane off of the frame – boy did that slow everything down!
This weekend I started digging up one flower bed – didn’t get a lot accomplished due to the neck issues but it is getting better so I got a little bit of yard work done. I have one area that has gotten so thick with black-eyed Susan’s that I want to dig them up, divide them and start planting in numerous areas of the yard. I got some dug up and they are so thick, I have no idea how many I transplanted. Hopefully a lot of them will make it through the winter and flower in the summer. I usually have good luck with this type of plant.
We have had a really nice November so far – temperatures are above normal in the low 70′s mainly, sun and clouds – but so nice compared to October which was so wet and drab. Oh well, better get back to this sewing on the binding!
The knitted scarf is finished. This was my second knitting project in about 3 years – the first was a shawl that turned into a small blanket on the couch! The scarf turned out ok.
I went ahead and put on my white fleece jacket and my scarf for you all to see. Now we need to see if we have a cold enough winter to use it! Sometimes a jacket is not needed and I use a sweatshirt or sweater. I do recall a winter now and then when I didn't use a jacket all winter! Somehow I don't think with this weird weather we have had this year that will happen - I bet we have a cold one.
Today it was near 70 – cooler than yesterday. We spent most of the day outside. I was mulching leaves with the riding lawnmower with mulcher baskets attached and Mike was working more on the extension of the deck that he started awhile back and hasn’t had the time (or the weather interfered) to finish. It is almost finished and hope he gets done with it in the next several weeks so we can clear out that section of the yard of all the building supplies.
Well I am off to work on quilt binding this evening and going to see what is on the tv.
EDITED: A couple people have asked if that wall hanging is a Carol Armstrong pattern – yes it is, I got the pattern out of a magazine. I do not have any of her books of patterns – I guess I really should with as much applique as I do.
We lost our internet for awhile yesterday so I was not able to get on last evening and post photo’s of the new dining area set. We drove over to Conway to pick it up and then Mike set to putting it together. They of course put it together for you if they deliver it, but if you pick it up the table comes ready for you to assemble. It took a little while but did not give Mike a lot of trouble.
the table in place and as you can see I did move the wall hanging up much higher on the wall and think it looks much better that way. The set takes up more room than I wanted but it will work out.
Under the table is a storage area for tablecloths, napkins, placemats ect.
Now the kitchen/dining area is finished. I would love to replace the floor too but that isn’t going to happen for now! I think my remodeling of that room is done. I do plan on making some placemats to use to keep the table top in good condition. Heaven knows I have plenty of fabric to use and batting scraps too!
I got more work done on “Insanity” lat night – moving right along an the hand stitching. The scarf is just about complete too. It feels good knowing I am about done with some projects.
Yesterday the weather was unbelievable and I wish I had been outside more than I was. It got up to 76 degrees and the sun was shining. I’m not sure but I think it will be more of the same today but maybe just a tad cooler. I intend to be outside more today now that we have the table taken care of.
I have all of the binding stitched to the front of “Insanity” now to begin the hand stitching on the back of it. I got started doing that this evening. I’m not going to take photo’s of every step, but here are two photos of the beginning.
the start of making the binding nice and neat at one of the first corners.
The back of the same area.
When I get done with the binding I plan on putting a little more quilting in. I think the scallops look a little bare. I think I will quilt the shape of the scallops about half way in the scallop if you know what I mean. Following the shape of the scallop? I’m not always good at explaining what I mean
the important thing is I know what I mean!
Have any of you gone to a physical therapist? Wow can they torture you at times!! The first couple visits were nice and relaxing actually – the last two! wow what a difference – he is pulling and stretching my neck and shoulders until I’m almost ready to scream – but then it is done and later in the day I think I feel a little more range of motion in my neck. But now tonight I am aching again. Almost out of muscle relaxers – hope to see some improvement tomorrow!
We pick up our new dining room set tomorrow I will post photos if we get it set in place. The table comes in two pieces as the table top sits on a pedestal type of stand – there is actually a shelf on the pedestal and a drawer where you can store placemats, tablecloths ect. I’ll post a photo when we have it ready. I’m afraid I’m not going to be a lot of help to Mike getting it on and off the trailer – I’m glad it comes in two pieces!
