The beginnings of a quilt

in quilts

ACHR0907Right now this is a quilt with no name (that sounds like a title for a Clint Eastwood movie :)   ).  The name will come later – right now it is “scrappy quilt with circles” .   The name of the quilt pattern that I am using  is called “Yoyoville” but I am not using yoyo’s, just circles and I don’t normally use the same name as the pattern although sometimes I do.   I have strips cut, some sewn together and next will be to match some up for four patch blocks.  I have four circles ready to applique onto the white squares.  Right now I am sewing the 4 patches by machine – but that might change – it just depends on my mood normally.   Sometimes I will start a quilt by machine, then do some by hand and then back to machine.  I decided to go totally scrappy for the 4 patch blocks and not stick with just 2 or 3 colors.  The whites are all mixed up too – so far I think I have 4 different white on whites in use.

the pieces and colors in use so far - the circles will be appliqued to the white squares.

Thank you to everyone for the great comments and e mails sent to me about the “Dutch Treat” table topper.  I like it too and think it turned out really well – I can put it as a rectangle on the table or turn it at an angle – put a vase of flowers on it or the big bright color jug on it and it will look great.  I will sometime this year be quilting the other small quilt top that will also be used on that table – I just do not have room for a wall hanging so no sense intending it for that.  Changing off between several will be nice.

You are quick! Looks like you made some wonderful progress already. I think the appliqued circles will be a nice change.

Oh, I love that stage when all the pieces are cut out and it’s just piecing-time without cutting-interruptions!

Looks great!

Interesting that you will do both hand and machine piecing on a quilt, I’ve never done that….but then I don’t like to do machine piecing LOL.

well I will still be cutting out fabric for awhile- this is just some that I need – I get bored quickly and tend to go back and forth between the steps when it is a large project Christine.

Crispy I sometimes use both the sewing machine and the hand sewing for pieces – it depends on if I have a hand sewing project prepped and ready to go. Right now though I am trying to make sure I have circles ready to applique for when I sit down to watch tv.

I don’t generally name my quilts. They are simply called by their pattern name. However, I made a wallhanging with squares and circle out of batik fabrics. I decided the fabrics looked like agate marbles (aggies). So named the WHing “Don’t Lose Your Marbles.”

I didn’t put the circles on the quilt until I started the quilting process. Sprayed temporary quilting adhesive to the circles and quilted them down with a spiral quilting motif. OH…circles are raw edged.

You have “made my day” (to follow the Clint Eastwood theme!). I think naming quilts is a good idea and as we are artists, we should. I always title my paintings and will now start to do the same to my quilts.
