I have the worst luck with every cutting/pressing mat I have ever gotten.  They all warp!  Do the rest of you have this problem and if you don’t what am I doing wrong with mine?

My latest - in the photo you can see how each end curves upward - this is what always happens. This one is a June Taylor 12x18 Quilter's Cut n Press II I do a lot of pressing on it - I rarely use the cutting side. I think I will go back to making my own again. I had one that I made - a piece of plywood, batting and muslin pulled tightly and stapled on the back. It finally got so brown and nasty looking on the muslin from all the starch and pressing that I tossed it.

I have tried to straighten it out by placing heavy objects on top of it over night - doesn't work. Any ideas?

More patches ready to sew. I haven't worked on my 4 patches in two or three days.

Progress on the Christmas Quilt -- but far from done.

And the weather here is still freezing cold!! Woke up to 12 degrees this morning and it will continue to be “Arctic” cold for the rest of the week – yuk!  Hopefully by Sunday or Monday this will be passing us by – I really don’t mind cold weather that much – but to me than means temperatures more in the 30 – 40 range :)

I’m surprised more of you do not have comments on the Quilt Show!!  Good or Bad it’s ok to post your opinion.  Thank you to those that have posted – I like hearing what you have to say.

  1. I got that quilt calendar (on your first photo) for Christmas too! Love your Christmas quilt!

  2. Try putting it in the trunk of your car, cutting mat side down. Lay bricks or something equally heavy on the ends and let it stay in the sun and get really hot. Sometimes that will do it, sometimes not. blessings, marlene

  3. Oh do you think the fabric shrank?
I don’t have one of those, just an ironing board and a tiny board that I got at goodwill.
My friend Helen has one and she’s had it for years, and it’s still flat…funny funny Marlene said leave in the sun to get really hot…yeah, in Arkansas, but not here in Canada at this time of year…funny girl!

  4. I love how your Christmas quilt is coming along.

    Keep warm!

  5. Can’t say that I have had problems with mats or ironing boards. So I am no help in that arena. Your hand quilting is just gorgeous!

  6. I wonder how do you all store your pressing/cutting mat when not in use – after I press I wonder if I should turn it over lay on the pressing side? I usually leave the pressing side up. I think I am going to write to the company and ask them!

  7. I found that even though it says it is for both pressing and cutting, the cutting mat doesn’t really like the heat. I think those kind of mats are mostly to be used for going to class, etc., not for daily pressing.

  8. Hmmmm, mine is a few years old, gets lots of pressing and cutting use and still lies flat (I’ve even put a new cover on it). It rests in my lap while I’m sewing and then I put it on top of my little thread cabinet when not in use. Maybe you have a very heavy hand when pressing LOL.
