Our snow is starting to melt already – we got up to 35 degrees today and the rest of the week should be in the 40′s – this snow will not last long!! Because I spent just about 3 whole days in the house and barely got outside I did get some sewing done, and a bit of tv watched! Too much, I don’t like to sit still for so long and can only wander back and forth in the house so much. I spent a lot of time on my applique square for the Red & Green Traditional quilt. Even though I washed my reds and greens 3 times I can now see I will have to pre-treat as well. I finished the block and washed it this evening as I had glue basted and I like to wash the glue out. I had a little bit of bleeding!!! Not a lot and it isn’t real noticeable. I have some Retayne and I will try treating it tomorrow and see if that little bit will come out. I am also going to order a new bottle as I am almost out – I might just order two while I am at it as I can see that even though I washed all of these reds and greens numerous times I might just as well pre-treat them all as well.
Block one of the Red and Green Quilt. In this photo the bleeding does not show up well and my husband couldn't spot it without me pointing it out to him so it is not real noticeable - probably just to quilters that are looking for that kind of thing. All of the rosebuds are from the same fabric, it was a really great mottled red that had some black in it as well to almost shades of pink, great for buds so they are not all the same. The really dark ones in the photo though are a little darker than they actually are, they appear darker here and I couldn't lighten the photo up properly.
Block 5 from Row 10 Dear Jane, Insanity Revisited. The first time I made this quilt I pieced this block as shown in the book, this time I appliqued it for something different - I think it was actually easier to piece.
Tomorrow I am getting out of the house for sure – I can’t stand being in the house all the time I go crazy.

The posting actually made me miss the snowed in days I lived in for many many years. Sipping tea, baking bread and quilting while the kids played in the snow. I love your quilts !

Oooo I hate when washed fabric still bleeds!! I don’t think you want to use the Retayne, doesn’t that set the dye? I believe it’s the Synthrapol and a color catcher you need to use. I appliqued that DJ block too and probably should have just pieced it.
Crispy
Both blocks are lovely – I like to use a Color Catcher sheet when I prewash/rinse new fabric – and do so until no more dye is released. (you can get them at the grocery store).
Enjoy your day. Lucky you – with melting snow.
Your wreath block looks wonderful…nothing worse than having fabric run on an applique block! I would definitely treat all the fabric-I have a three dimensional applique quilt that didn’t run until the third washing-a real bummer!
Love your pictures of the snow-your yard really looks like a winter wonderland.
Here, its an early spring-I just said today to DH (on our way to the super) that I have to put the little camera in my purse because the wild flowers are already sprouting up.

Wow, your appliqué is stunning, Karen!
I’ve tried to do needle-turn, but am just not good at it!!
We’ve been snowed in for a few days here, as well, and they’re calling for another big snow-storm tomorrow! There is actually rationing of salt for the roads here right now…worst winter in a long time!!
Your block is beautiful, I do love the Red and Green block, and your appliqué is very nice – perfect. We also have lots of snow, I hope you got out of the house today.

The block is simply beautiful, as I knew it would be. Do you use Shout Color Catcher sheets when you was fabrics? I love them! I think I could stay in the house for a week and not think about going out…just love being in my pajamas all day.

Karen, I have a piece of fabric that is red. I have washed it 3 times and my color catcher sheets still come out a faded rose color. What should I use to set the color. I noticed Crispy said to use Synthropol.
Do you not when to use the Retayne and where do you buy it from?
I can’t use the red fabric in a red, green, and white quilt as long as it is going to bleed. Thanks.
