As you all know (if you read my blog that is LOL ) I finished a big quilt top last week – my circles and four patches. I have been pondering how to finish off the border. I had thought to just scatter some circles around but I’m now thinking of another idea
light bulbs are always going off aren’t they. Here is the picture of the quilt with the incomplete border in case you haven’t seen it.

The four patches and circles quilt
Now what do you think of this border on this baby quilt that I made about 4 years ago – only on the big queen size top.

I really like this border. (I think I found this pattern in a McCall's magazine - maybe about 6 years ago? I no longer have the magazine I just cut the pattern out)
Maybe put the four patches in the corners and then circles in other places – or all four patches as this one has? Actually I think 9 patch would be better color wise. Because it is a queen size quilt and this was a baby size, more patches would go on the sides of course. I don’t know why I happened to think of this baby quilt earlier when I was looking at the border. I will make vines using the darker of the two aqua colors that I used in the Dutch Treat quilt. I have plenty leftover and would be able to make bias stripes easily from it. That color has been used here and there in the four patches and will go well with the light aqua stripe in the border.
I will get started making bias strips for the vines and see what you all have to say and decide later on patches and circles.
Of course now that I have been looking at this baby quilt so much today I have of course thought how great it would look in a queen size too LOL — maybe next year

I like the idea of some sort of vine. But you also have wonderful space for some awesome quilting too.

I think the vine is a good idea, but why not 4 patches (or 16 patches)to carry on the theme from the center, and because I like randomness, I would have random circles appliqued out there too. I think possibly you like things more orderly and balanced than I do.

Yes a vine might be nice with small squares and circles as the flowers?
You’ll figure it out in the wee hours of the morning, that’s what I do.

I love the vine idea Karen (that baby quilt is beautiful btw). 9 patches as shown and then circles scattered in the curve of the vine.

I can’t believe how fast you got the circles quilt together! I think a vine in the border with circle would be great. I love the baby quilt too.

Hi Karen
Another wonderfull quilt top! I think it would look great if the border would have the squares in the corners then the vine and some circles.

thanks everyone. I have given it more thought last night and I’m going to look at it more today and get it figured out.

I always think your ideas are great – I too like the border with the squares in the corner and the vines with circles to pull it all together – beautiful quilt!

Karen, I also like the idea of the vine trailing around your large quilt. It will draw you eye around the entire quilt nicely. However you are on your own with the rest of the design as either 4 or 9 patches or circles or a combination will all work well; it’s just preference and since it is your quilt, it will be up to you, obviously. A couple of questions though: 1) Do you know how you are going to quilt it, design-wise that is? 2) Will you hand quilt it and if so does that make a big difference with the chosen design since it is harder to hand quilt through seams and you have a lot of them on this quilt? 3) What are you still doing with a baby quilt unless you have a secret you have not revealed yet? hehehe Perhaps you can address the two serious questions in your blog for all of us to read. Thanks!

the quilt looks great. I don’t know what I would do. I have been thinking about it since I looked here yesterday. I know you will make a perfect choice.
