I can not believe at times what litter people throw out in the countryside!! About once a month I walk along our property line that borders the highway to pick up trash out of our ditch. Sometimes is worse than others – today was one of the worst I had seen in sometime. The area I am talking about is less than a tenth of a mile long and I just about filled up a 13 gallon trash bag. I wish I had taken a photo of my collection!! I picked up a ripped pair of shorts! 3 socks, a hat, beer bottles, plastic coke bottles, a empty beer case cardboard box, empty trash bags – plastic.
Shorts and socks though! I do believe that I have never picked those up before. Beer bottles yes – every week there are beer bottles in our ditch – why – we live in a dry county (no alcohol is sold) people drive to the next county over to get alcohol and can not wait to drink before they get home and are drinking and throwing out their empties along the way. We live in what is referred to as the Bible Belt and dry counties in the south are common — although a lot of people do drink — they vote in dry and say it is bad for the youth, drunk driving ect and let the next county get all the tax dollars from the sales – doesn’t make sense to me but there you go I am a transplanted Yankee
and we all know Yankees do not have dry counties!! None that I have heard of that is.
We have gotten the yard work done this evening and got the grass cut while it is cool outside – the heat wave finally broke and it was nice today and tonight will be in the upper 60′s (make that lower 60′s I just checked) I believe and the next night too!! It feels so good. One more day to go – tomorrow all the food stuff and bathroom stuff needs to be put in the camper. I turned the refrigerator on this morning in the camper to get it good and cold before I start packing the food in it.
I did not work on any Jane triangles today although this evening I will cut one out and prep it and maybe start work on it tomorrow. I won’t be busy all day!

Karen, I know what you mean about the trash. We used to live on a “farmette” …. about 13 acres. We had a long board fence along the front roadway and for some reason, drivers seemed to think that was a sign to throw their trash there. Most of ours was from the fast food places. Doesn’t anyone teach their kids to not to throw trash out the window? I grew up with that rule; I am sure you did too. Well, sounds like “we” are ready to roll!! Can’t wait to see where “we” go! Safe Trip!!!
I’m glad the heat wave broke for you. You will need new energy to finish the packing and last minute details.

Yep, all I can do is commiserate. Some people are pigs–and that’s an insult to pigs.
I live in Nevada. The bars never close. Dry? No such thing, not ever.

I remember when I was a kid in the 60′s & 70′s… trash littered America. Don’t you remember all the “Clean up America” campaigns? Littering became a dirty word. Now, it appears to be back in style!
Once a year, Jim and I would take our livestock trailer and pick up trash on the 4 mile stretch of gravel road between our farm and the highway. The first year we did it, we hauled 1.5 tons of trash to the dump. Sad.

I can’t image having to pick up that much trash CJ – what pigs people are!!
Karen we normally have a lot of fast food wrappers too – surprised there wasn’t any tonight!! Normally that is what competes for the most with the beer bottles.
Yes the weather will be so much more pleasant for carting things back and forth to the camper – even though it is parked by the house I can carry just so much at a time
Michelle – I have been through Nevada and have seen all the bars – in Wisconsin where I grew up there is a neighborhood bar on almost every corner in the towns
I absolutely detest people that litter. In our area we don’t have much trouble with litter. We have trouble with people dumping their unwanted dogs and cats..ugh.

Same here. We live on the highway and end up with trash we have to pick up also.
Well, it looks like you are all ready to go. I would be so excited. Oh, you are going to the Sister’s Quilt show, aren’t you? That, in itself, would be a blast. Do you have a lot of other plans or you just going to take things as they come?

I am mortified at the thought of people drinking beer while they are driving!!!!!!!!!!!
I would hate to be out on the roads while drunk drivers are about.
I cant stand trash either!
Travel safely, Karen.

It seems we always live on a corner, whether in the city or country, and always find trash on our lawn. Vermont has bottle redemption, too, and still people throw out cans and bottles. Paul thinks there should be a “trash tax” on fast food items. When did our society decide it couldn’t go anywhere without a drink (water, coffee, etc.) in hand?
Anyway, thanks for ranting and have a great trip!

I hear ya Karen. After living in Seattle where it’s REALLY frowned on to toss things from the car, plus a big fine if your caught doing it, I was shocked when I see how much garbage there is along the country roads. I’m a real stinker though, I was following someone from my town. They tossed out 4 McDonald bags, I stopped, picked them up and delivered them to their house, saying “I believe you dropped this”. Boy did that story spread through town like wildfire LOL.
Crispy
sounds like we all have trash story’s. We have some trouble with people dropping off cats and dogs in the country but in my particular corner that hasn’t been too much of a problem in recent years – maybe because we have no pets the animals do not stop here to find food?
The Sisters Quilt show is in Oregon and we are not going there – we on to Nebraska and Wyoming and various states on our way to visit our daughter and family in Wisconsin before coming home.
Yep. We have trash here too. Someone buys Marlboros in box packaging. One of these days I’m going to meet him/her! Once I picked up the discarded box and squished it…realizing that it wasn’t empty. I was gloating about the expensive cigarettes being tossed…opened the box…drop my teeth! It was marijuana! Bet the person wasn’t happy about that discard!!!
When I got to work this morning I saw someone had shoved a disposable coffee cup with some coffee still in it right in the bushes by the back employee entrance. I can’t believe someone would do that. I hope it isn’t an employee. Lazy people.

Oh Karen, I walk my dog in the park, now he’s a westie, so his poop isn’t big, but it seems to me the big dog owners sometimes just don’t pick up after themselves! Honestly, it’s because I think the dog runs, then stops too far for them to walk over and scoop.
I often have my pockets filled with papers, etc that I drop off in the litter box at the park entrance.
I do think sometimes the wind spreads some litter, but socks, beer bottles, and shorts is not part of the scenario I have in my mind.
What has happened to us?
There was a guy that didn’t scoop his poop and I took some to his lawn one day….told him it was his week’s supply and if he did it again…bylaw officer was going to call….he doesn’t walk the park now, but the road where no one bothers him…stupid person.
