No Blocks Today – Blueberries instead!

I do have one more block prepped and ready to go but today was taken up with other things.  Blueberry picking first thing this morning.  I met CJ at 7 and we headed out to my brother’s farm.  We had a great day for berry picking.  Neither of us had “fixed” ourselves up we assumed we would be hot and sweaty with hats and bug spray.  We were pleasantly surprised when the weather stayed at a comfortable 70 (?) and very cloudy.  Here are photos of the farm – caught CJ in a couple ( but not close ups – not when we aren’t fixed up :) )

part of the blueberry farm, that is CJ walking up to the shed

another part of the farm - those are rows of blueberries. I should have taken a close up of the berries but didn't think to do so - lots of ripe ones out there.

and more blueberries - I have no idea how many rows and plants he has - I will need to ask him sometime. Doesn't he have a pretty view

My brother Jeff and his daughter Lily busy at work. Lily helps out every summer and does a good job. Back of CJ.

a gallon of fresh clean blueberries - and they are all mine! (Mike doesn't eat many of them)

Instead of starting the dehydrator with blueberries today seeing as it stayed nice out I was working outside instead.  The berries are washed and I will start that process tomorrow. Also the plan is to make fresh muffins and a cheesecake with blueberry topping.

Tonight I will get back to work on a Dear Jane  Block – number 8 I believe it is I prepped it last night so it is ready for stitching.  Last night I got to work looking through the Red and Green Applique blocks and picked out two that I will start prep work on.  I have the patterns traced out on to freezer paper and will need to get those pieces cut out and then I will glue baste the design down so I will not need to bring the overlay with me on the trip – just no room for something like that.  After I get these two blocks glue basted down I will look and see if I want to do another 2 blocks to bring also – sometimes they really go quickly.  I still need to draw the quilting lines on the small quilt I plan to quilt on the road also.   Too busy!

Karen, Well can you believe it? Another two things we have in common besides our name: I also love blueberries and my Mike does not either!!! Hmmm, wonder what all this means? Anyway, your brother’s blueberries look wonderful. I am salivating just looking at the photos. Wish I could stop by for a blueberry muffin right out of the oven.

Yum! I have three 1 year old blueberry bushes here at my new house so don’t anticipate much again this summer. In Vermont we don’t begin picking them until late July! I love the bushes’ fall foliage, too.

I’m glad it stayed cool for ya’ll to get your blueberries picked. I haven’t ever seen a blueberry plant but I couldn’t enlarge your pic enough to get a good view.

I love the sky in the background.

I have never seen a blueberry farm. I am so jealous. I love fresh blueberries, in fact I bought some this week. I had to pay an arm and a leg for them but fresh blueberries are worth it.

Here’s another one who never has seen a blueberry farm. :) When I lived at the farm, the forest was close by, so we went blueberry picking in the forest. I love blueberries, especially on pancakes – yummy! I’ve bought fresh blueberries once here, they were imported from South Africa – expensive, but I just had to buy it! :) Blueberry muffins – to die for! :)

Nice. We are planning to go pick strawberries on Thursday. We got a farm share this year and as part of that we get to go Upick 10 lbs of strawberries and then after Labor Day Upick tomatoes at the farm where we have the farm share. Every Tuesday we will go to pick up our share. I hope to try lots of new veggies! They plant a ton of varieties of veggies.

Oh wow, Northern Maine has thousands of acres of blueberry farms and I was amazed when I saw them!
Nothing better is there?
In Canada, besides the asparagus season which is first, of course I don’t count fiddleheads which are totally Canadian I think, we begin with the strawberries at the end of June.
I love picking strawberries fresh from the field!
Didn’t you just have the best time? A generous brother to be sure.
My neighbour had 3 bushes of berries which the birds promptly at as they were ripening!

LOL – my generous brother charges me for my berries just like he charges everyone else – he gave me my first gallon free when he first opened for business about 5 years ago but since then – I pay :( he has to make a living too you know!

Are blueberry farms more in the southern US than the north and other countries?

Mmmm! Blueberries!

My aunt used to grow strawberries and raspberries and I loved to pick them but I’ve even seen a blueberry bush! Thanks for the pix!

To me blueberries are funny things. The ones I get at the store have little taste and I’ve never had any picked fresh. I love your latest dear jane blocks.

Karen, There are a ton of blueberry farms in NJ. And even though I am not the least bit prejudice (OK, I am enormously prejudice when it comes to blueberries and tomatoes), they are the best you can get. So look in your stores for blueberries from the South Jersey area such as Hammonton (which was once called the Blueberry Capital of the World). Actually the Pine Barrens are well known in general for blueberries. You won’t taste better berries … except if you are camping and pick those little ones in Maine but then that probably has a lot to do with being outside and eating the blueberry pancakes that your Mom makes for you.
