Quite a few years ago I tried EQ5 – new to me at the time — I am not good with computer programs – I have to use over and over again to learn and remember all there is to working them. I have been against quilting programs since as I never caught on to it well. I have been looking at so many blogs though where people are using EQ7 and have nothing but compliments and rave reviews for it.
If you used the old EQ programs did you find EQ7 easier to use or harder? Do you like it and do you feel it is easy for a person who is not computer program savvy to use?
More and more I wish to design my own quilt patterns for me to use and possibly also design some wall hangings from vacation photos – if you use that part of the EQ7 program do you like it?
All opinions are welcome!

I couldn’t live without EQ, but it does take a bit of commitment to sit down and learn how to use it. How I tend to approach that is I figure out how to do whatever it is that I need doing as I need it, that way I enjoy the process, but otherwise it bores me to just sit and learn without applying it to something.
You can learn a lot simply by figuring out how to redraw an existing quilt pattern, the added benefit to that approach is now you can audition all your fabrics first!

I wouldn’t say EQ7 is easier or harder, it just has more features. It still work about the same way. I love it and I’m glad I bought it but I certainly don’t use half of the features! You have to like designing on the computer for it to be worthwhile.
You know how much I love my EQ7 and it is MUCH more user friendly than EQ5 was. The part I loved the best is that all your tools can be put in the tool bar so no more clicking to find the right tool. I don’t do photo quilts but it looks like they put a lot of really nice new features in the program for making them.
I agree with CJ, find a quilt pattern to duplicate and start drawing. EQ7 does not come with that little “cookbook” that EQ5 had and if you follow the EQ7 manual it skips around too much to use as an easy learning tool. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me….I really wouldn’t mind.

Karen, I bought EQ6 earlier and some weeks ago I got the EQ7, which I have not had a look at yet (computer problems). I don’t know EQ6 very well, haven’t bothered to sit down and learn it properly. I have used it for designing a couple of my quilts, and I love the way it is possible to choose a block and then decide on the size (blocks and the quilt) – don’t have to break my brain to do mathematic! lol I’d love to do some photo quilts, but I’m not there yet… I have no idea about EQ5, but I have heard from other quilters EQ6 and EQ7 are much better… Why not give it a try?

EQ 7 has a bunch of photo features though I have not used them I been reading the different messages from the e-mail list. I though EQ6 was much easier to use then EQ 5 at least in some of the drawing features if you are using the blocks that came with the program it is not a big deal.
As for easier then 5 or not I think like everything you have to sit down and dedicate some time to learning the program. I personely like messing with such things and not everyone does. I been thinking about but have not done it yet taking some of the manuel info and putting recording it. I like to hear verbal cue’s instead of trying to read what I am trying to do and then doing it. (does that make sense)
I had EQ3, 4 and 5 and stopped. A friend took a course on-line for EQ6 at the Quilt University and loved it…made it easy to follow and use and there was someone to answer questions.

I use EQ7 but I am really a novice. The way I started was to design a quilt on paper first and then figured out how to do it in EQ. I can’t say it was easy, or even is now sometimes, but with each quilt I do better. One other thing, I began by designing blocks (much easier) and then moved on to quilts. It does take some time but it is well worth it
