I told you all last week or earlier this week that I had ordered charm packages from Connecting Threads to see what the fabric was like as the prices are so low that it had me curious as to the quality of the fabric. Let me say right off the bat, I have no affiliation with Connecting Threads, I have no stock with the company
I had no incentive to buy their products, I got no discount ect. other than getting free shipping on my order of slightly over $50 as I took this opportunity to order some notions that I needed – rotary blades ect, this is just me giving my opinion which very well might differ from an experience you had with their fabric. My package arrived today – so here are the photos-
These are the 3 packages of Batik Charms that I got – they are called – fall, summer and spring each package had 24 charms and each package cost me $2.48. I felt them, rubbed them, tried to stretch them, held them up to the light and then did the same with a piece of batik that I got from a quilt shop – truthfully they seem to be exactly the same. Now I did not wash them, or of course try to sew with them or quilt them. I will do that down the road and share my results with you. ( EDITED: I do not mean to wash them as charms but after they are put into a quilt)
Next, the row on the left had 40 pieces in it and is called Candy Mirage Charms it cost $2.75 again the touch, fondle, stretch, light test – all seemed the same as I normally would purchase at a quilt shop.
The row on the right is Mirage Jewel Charms, 24 charms for $1.65 same testing, same results.
Next up were these 3 packets. The one on the left is Candy Solid Charms, 58 pieces for $3.99
the middle row – Bright Candy Charms, 31 pieces for $2.76
the row on the right is a bit of a mixture called Flower Basket Charms, 24 pieces for $2.02
they all passed my test also.
This is my own opinion as stated above but I found nothing wrong with these fabrics. The next test will be sewing with them – but they have passed my touch/look at test
As you can see by the prices I did not spend much money on them so it will be no big waste if they do not sew well. I don’t know when I will get around to doing something with them – I will make several baby quilts or lap size quilts with them to test them out. I’m labeling Ziploc bags with each set to keep them organized by type of fabric so I will know what I used. I will do a post sometime in the future about the experience.
In this day and age of economy problems any reduction in quilting supplies (if good quality) is welcome in my book. As a lot of you know there are no quilt shops in my area and I have to travel over 80 miles in any direction to get to a nice shop – all we have in our town is Hobby Lobby.
I will certainly continue to also shop at other on line stores and I will share a photo of the fabric that I also got today to expand my red and greens for the applique quilt that I am doing in those shade – my selection was running low so I needed to get some more. I will post of photo that I took today of the Bow Tie Medallion quilt as well.

So far so good Karen :0) I’ll be interested in the wash test as I know that the Hoffman Watercolor batiks run horribly….I’ve not much experience with other batiks. The Connecting Threads batiks do sound like a great deal.
Crispy
Thanks Karen. That is good to know. I can’t wait to get your opinion on how they sew. I love a bargain.
I purchased some batiks from Marshall’s in Batesville and found the exact same brand in a quilt shop in Fort Smith the next week. After I saw that, I wished I would have purchased more.

I use some Connecting Threads fabrics… bear in mind I do NOT wash my fabrics as I make mostly wall hangings and want them to stay crisp…. and have no problems with it. When they first started doing their ‘own’ fabrics, it seemed to ravel more than usual, but over the last year or so, that has stopped, at least with the fabrics I’ve bought.
I have a friend that owns a quilt and she is way lower on fabrics than the shop in Rogers or the one south of Ft. Smith. She said she had rather sell a lot of fabric for a little than a little for a lot of money. A lot of quilt shops are taking us for a ride. I’m to the point that I seek online sales and rarely shop brick stores unless they are having a whale of a sale. I’m not making heirloom quilts, so connecting threads is good enough for me if they have the right colors. I’m not affiliated with them either, but my purse loves them.
Good to know, Karen. So far so good. I wonder how colorfast they are? Will it be tough to wash charm squares? I guess I would do it by hand. I got a package of yarn today from “Knit Picks,” and noticed that the return address is the same as Connecting Threads. So I guess they are affiliated. The other yarn I bought from Knit Picks has been great – a lot cheaper than Joann’s and offering lots more colors.
I have bought kits from them , have not washed yet but they sew just like all other material I like them, I order alot from them.
Thanks for the report!

Karen, this is interesting. I haven’t heard of Connecting Threads, I’ll check out if they ship international. I’ve bought a couple of charm packs from Fabricshack.com, still in the shelf – lol. I have heard one should not wash charm packs before use because of the small size, same with jelly rolls…. I don’t know, have no experience…
They look gorgeous from the photos. Connecting Threads used to send out a catalog but I don’t think I ever ordered from them. Glad you checked it out.

Great fabrics! I used to love shopping at Connecting Threads-then they stopped shipping overseas so that was that. (I even bought my quilt frame from them!)

I love your idea of organizing the fabric in ziplocs, am totally going to borrow that idea from you!

You will not be sorry. I have ordered a ton of fabric from them. It feels lovely and soft and sews beautifully. I have not washed any so cannot comment on that. But with some stores selling similar fabrics at 17/yd, there is no contest. I have also found their customer support phone line very helpful, e.g. if you are concerned about a colour on the monitor– is it taupe or tan for example–they will go and LOOK for you.
Their clearance kits are a great deal, even if you just want the fabric for your stash and do not want to make that particular item.
I have bought form the B&B collection, Antoinette, several sampler strips and charms, and many reduced kits as the price can’t be beat.
I have been buying from Connecting Threads for years (I have an order coming in tomorrow in fact
) I recently bought some of their solids for backing and it’s one of the softest I’ve felt, I take it out everytime I’m in my sewing room and pet it for a bit before I get started. I’ve washed quite a bit of the quilts made from their fabric and have had no problems whatsoever, and you’re right Shan, their customer support is second to none.
