Red & Green Traditional Applique

in quilts

Another block finished!!  That makes 8 of these large blocks – I need 4 more and the big center block which will take a bit more time than these have.  I need to look through the book to figure out what the last 4 blocks will be -  I might stick with easy versus hard!

This is the last block I finished just a little while ago.  Because the center of the flower is so large I cut away the back as I did each layer, then I can quilt easily on the flower so it be too puffy.

The back cut away.  I didn’t bother cutting away on the back of the leaves as I have no intention of quilting on them but will around them instead.

Here is all 8 blocks – took up my whole skinny long flannel wall – next time I will need to put out the big design wall.  I love these blocks and I’m glad I decided to make this quilt.  I still like the bottom two the best, but the top row on the right with all the little tiny circles is a favorite also.  I like the way it twirls.

I like all of the blocks. Back in the 1960′s I thought I would make a quilt like that some day. I realized early on that I don’t have the patience for enough applique to fill one block, let alone a whole quilt.

Seeing your blocks all together is very impressive. That is going to be a lovely quilt. Cute kitties, too.

I am with Wanda … early on I wanted to do a quilt like this. I saved different pictures and patterns. Got all the supplies I needed … BUT I barely got 2 squares done. Alas, I realized this was not for me. I do applique and enjoy it but not those gorgeous Baltimore Album-type quilts. Made I reached too high to start out. Anyhow all of this wordage is to say how much I greatly admire quilters like you who can create these to-die-for awesome quilts. Phenomenal , absolutely !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful blocks–wonderful hand work.

I’m not going to show Craig those kittens or he will want them.

Hi Karen,
Love your applique squares. I enjoy hand stitching and applique quilts have always been favourites although I haven’t done many myself. My sister-in-law is a master at it and promises to teach me new techniques in the new year. I do so enjoy following your blog. Thank you!
