2010 Quilting Accomplishments

by Karen on December 31, 2010

in quilts

This year has been a year that I got a lot done in the sewing department!  What have I done:

Two little blocks that will end up in a fancier than normal applique quilt for me.  I do not know what the name of it will be or what the rest of the blocks will be.  I started this at the beginning of the year and it has sat aside while I work on other things.  I will eventually finish it. (needle turn applique)

the other one:

Next that I have is my dear Jane #2 Insanity Revisited, I made about half of the blocks this year, all of the border – it will be quilted maybe late in 2011?  (hand pieced)

image

Baltimore Bliss quilt top was made last year and hand quilted this year (needle turn applique)

image

Bow Tie Medallion is a queen size machine pieced quilt – hand quilted who knows when:

image

Devils Puzzle table topper, machine pieced in 2009 and hand quilted in 2010

image

Going in Circles – machine pieced, needle turn applique in 2009 and 2010 and in the process of hand quilting – this shows about half the quilt, it is queen size

image

I started the year with 4 pineapple blocks paper pieced and didn’t work on it much now I have 8 of them – this will be the year to work on this I think.

image

Little Table topper for my mom – machine pieced and my first attempt at machine quilting

image

Crayon Box child quilt – machine pieced and hand quilted

image

Christmas Memories – needle turn applique in 2009 and hand quilted in 2010

image

Traditional Red and Green Applique – needle turn applique 8 of 12 blocks needed plus a large center block – I would like to finish all the applique this year.

image

Sugar and Spice – baby quilt, machine pieced, needle turn applique and hand quilting

image

So Charming, couch size quilt, hand pieced and hand quilted

image

Star Crazy – this photo is not mine it is from the blog site that I got the BOM from – my quilt is all machine pieced and ready to put together.  I started it in January 2010 and finished the blocks this month.   It is about 85 x 85 I believe. I might add another border around the edges but I’m not sure – will put together what I have and go from there.  Nice to have queen size if possible.

image

I think this concludes what I have done this year.  Accomplished a lot!! Next year?

1- Get the quilting on Going in Circles finished

2- try to start quilting on Insanity Revisited

3- work on the pineapple blocks

4- finish the red and green applique blocks

5 – work on more of the fancy applique blocks

6- make the signature quilt for my niece from signatures gathered at her wedding

7- more small quilt tops, table toppers, quilting on finished tops – who knows Smile what is your list like if you have one?

Latest Win and Handwork

by Karen on December 30, 2010

in life in general, quilts

My package arrived in the mail today from Spun Sugar Quilts.  This was the last give away that I won – 12 fat quarters of Fandango by Kate Spain!  These last several wins that I have had – the one last month of 22 fq’s and this one are so different from what I normally use that I will have to think outside of the box.  I do not normally use big prints much at all.   Any ideas for a pattern to use with this fabric?

002

I have been hand piecing strips for the quilt that I gave a link to the other day – I’m not wild about the colors and prints but it is just for a small quilt to keep myself occupied while I heal so no big deal.  This was some of the inexpensive fabric from Connecting Threads — a jelly roll called Sweet Pea.  I might use this for more machine quilting practice of the simple straight stitch on the machine later. That way I won’t ruin anything I am wild about!  I need 27 sets of these and then white 1 3/4 inch strips in between in the setting the pattern shows.

003

News from the doctor visit today was that nothing else is wrong, I am healing as I should be and will be sore for several weeks or longer – each person heals on their own time so we are all different on the way we heal from the seat belt slapping you hard across your chest!! The bruises are turning yellow – looking real pretty Smile

I am resting a lot and then come in here to the sewing room and sit at the table where my computer is and watch the birds outside the window and check mail and blogs – then I go back to reading and hand stitching Smile not doing a lot!  Mike will help me this weekend put all the Christmas stuff away I had planned on doing that today but no rush and we have the weekend to do it before Mike goes back to work.

I’m glad I had baked bread last week and had sliced and froze it in several bags.  No kneading bread for a couple weeks I think – if I want to do that I might have to drag out the old bread machine which I normally do not use anymore.

Not a great photo of the finches hanging on the bag outside the window but I will try to get some better ones while I am sitting here in the days to come – this was taken through the window & screen.  Winter always brings the finches.

Improving

in quilts

Well even though I am still sore I’m not near as sore as I was Sunday night and Monday!  I am slowly moving around and doing a bit more today than I had been.  Still taking it easy but at least I haven’t spent the whole day on the couch.  Still have pain in my chest but it is much better than it was.

I got one jelly roll that I bought from Connecting Threads cut into 5 inch strips and I have them now sorted by color and print.  I will have this be a hand piecing project while I am taking it easy for a little bit.  It is a bit awkward trying to hand quilt on the big frame – I gave up after a very brief attempt.  I don’t want to get the sewing machine out as I know I won’t be able to sit very long doing that.  I had not gotten the applique project prepped yet and fabric is on high shelves so I don’t even want to start reaching for things!  So the jelly roll it is.

Have you seen the newest pattern that the Moda Bake Shop had put out on the blog?  Here is a link to the pattern I am going to do. The fabric I am using is called Sweet Pea I had 2 jelly rolls with 24 strips in each so if this isn’t enough I will use the other.  Out of one of these rolls I used a little already on one of the mug rugs that I made this December but there is plenty left.  I didn’t even check the pattern to see how many strips I need – I saw 5 inch strips, sew 8 together then join with white strips Smile  I will first sew these into groupings of 8 each and go from there.  It is a very easy pattern!

An update on the car situation.  I no longer feel sorry for the young man driving!!  It might end up that he is not covered with insurance.  He “borrowed” a car without permission.  He did not have his drivers license with him.  He says he has insurance but it is from obscure company that our State Farm agent has not heard of.  The borrowed car’s insurance agent says they are not libel because he was not supposed to be driving the car – his insurance so far says he is only covered for driving the car that his insurance covers but they have not gotten much information from them yet.  We do have full coverage including if we are hit by an uninsured vehicle but they only cover $5,000.00 in medical coverage.  ER’s are expensive and I have no idea if the bill will be more than that when you include in the ambulance too.  We might have to pay for some of that.  We will need to pay deductibles possibly also.  All of this is up in the air yet and maybe we will hear good news.  The investigation continues and our agent says they will go after the driver as much as they can though his insurance company but they have a feeling it might be some small time thing that won’t cover much.  On the car part if no other insurance covers ours will take care of most of that other than the deductible.  So glad I hadn’t reduced it to liability only after we had paid it off.  We had thought about it but then decided Honda’s hold a high value for awhile so thought we would wait and then we kind of just forgot about it – so glad we did, the uninsured part might not have been in the policy any longer if we had changed it.

I am still moving slow and imagine I will be for the rest of the week.  I have not been on the computer a lot and yesterday I got so many nice comments and e mails from everyone that I have not been able to answer most of them – I’m not even going to try Smile.  So I just want to say thank you to all of you. Yes I am taking it slow, I am napping a lot, using a heating pad, no lifting of anything heavier than a book.  I do have a doctor appointment scheduled for Thursday for a follow up.  I hope I will be moving better by then.

The insurance company will be getting the police report sometime today and then they can start whatever procedures they do for letting us know if the car is totaled or fixable.  If we need to get something new I hope we can do that next week or the week after.  I know I do not feeling like driving this week so it is not a problem.  The Honda is the car that I always drive and what we take with us towing when we travel with the motor home so whatever we get has to be able to be towed and within the right weight restrictions.

The day or so before Christmas I had won a $50 gift card from the Fat Quarter Shop, I had placed an order and was amazed to get it yesterday already.  Such fast service.  Two jelly rolls from the Lily & Will line from Bunny Hill, one in pinks and browns and the other in blues and brown.  A yard of this very pretty yellow with cosmos flowers – I would like to do something with it where I will use the whole flowers so they show us nicely – some fussy cutting.  The other is a nice polka dot – one yard also.

Underneath the above photo is the next red and green applique block pattern that I was going to start to prepare the other day when the accident happened. It will wait.  Here is the photo of the book I found shortly before Christmas that I mentioned I was going to use some of the blocks from for the quilt that I am working on.  I really like a lot of the wreath blocks in this book.  They will mix and match so well with the other book I am using from Jeana Kimball “Red and Green, An Applique Tradition”.

Back around Thanksgiving I had won a book from Abbey Lane Quilts called Fab Five – truthfully I’m not even sure where I had seen mention of the give away for this book.  Some of you have asked how do I find the give aways.  I have a lot of blogs on my google reader.  When someone updates their blog it shows up on the reader.  If someone mentions a give away I go look to see what is being given – if it is something I wouldn’t mind adding to my sewing room I leave a comment – sometimes I am lucky and sometimes not.  I don’t know how many I left comments for in the months of November & December – but I was lucky and I won 4 of them.  I am waiting for one more prize from a shop and the gift was 12 fat quarters.  I will show that one when it arrives.  Now why I can’t be as lucky and win a lottery is beyond me – really that is the prize I would love!!

Yes at times I feel like I spend too much time on the computer and not enough time quilting.  I am going to try to give myself an adjustment on that this year  -  I wonder if I will do it.  Computers are addictive and quilting blogs are very addictive.  You see so many pretty things you just keep on looking at more!

Now I am going to get off of the computer again and go rest Smile

Car Accident

by Karen on December 27, 2010

in quilts

Sad smile what a way to end Christmas.  Yesterday we decided to go see “True Grit” at the new movie theater in a town 45 miles from us.  It was a good movie.  On the drive home we thought to stop and get something to eat before getting home.  We were only 12 miles from home when a car hit us on the front passenger side.  Their fault not ours.  Mike is fine  – me on the other hand – I am aching and sore in the chest area.  We had our seat belts on and I didn’t fly into the windshield thank goodness, but it held me tight enough that I am very sore and have some mild swelling in the chest – breast bone area.  X-Rays were taken and they could see no break.  I was in ER for 3 hours.  They also checked my heart and all was fine.  I will just be sore for who knows how many days to come.  I’m 58 years old and other than a couple minor fender benders years ago I have never been in an accident.  Wish I hadn’t been in this one either.

Mike went to see the insurance agent this morning and then over to where they took the car to see what it looks like – it was paid for – almost 7 years old and at least 130,000 miles on it – I won’t be surprised if it isn’t totaled.

One funny thing about it all though is that the EMT that treated me at the scene and road with me in the ambulance was Larry – Vivian’s husband “Sew At Home On Pine Ridge”. I met Vivian last year (she lives about 50 miles from me) and we had been planning on having lunch this week! She had just posted a photo of her husband making breakfast Christmas morning and I recognized him immediately.  I introduced myself and my husband to him – it felt really reassuring to me even though I had never met him.  It was like I knew I was in good hands Smile

I do feel sorry for the young driver and passengers though – a young man driving must have only been about 17, his sister in National Guard uniform was with him and her 2 little kids – thankfully they were all ok and I’m sure this will have been a learning experience for him to be more careful in the future – he was crying so upset.

Well I have been up long enough and it is time to lay back down again – talk to you all later!

Was Santa Good To You

by Karen on December 26, 2010

in life in general, quilts

Santa was good to me I had plenty of presents to unwrap.  I also got some good books – I opened one up on Christmas Eve and I’m done with it already! That is what happens when I take a break from sewing.

Love this author – Dennis Lehane.  This book picks up on Gone Baby Gone only 12 years later.  You do not have to read the first book to enjoy this one.  It has been awhile since I had read it and didn’t remember the whole thing and totally loved this book.

006

Got another book that I just started – I guess I am in reading mode again – it left me for awhile – this one has both cop – Harry in it and lawyer – Mickey in it – should be a good read.

007

I have been looking through my red and green applique book and I was running out of blocks that I liked – I found a different red and green applique book that I liked before Christmas and I am going to take the final 4 blocks out of it.  I need to enlarge the patterns slightly but love them – these have embroidery on them to, so mixing in with the other blocks well look great – this is the one I will start to get ready to work on this week.  Each of the 4 blocks are in the wreath style.

003

Mike got a new camera for me – my other one went and had a break on it several months ago – the little thing that holds the battery in broke off.  I managed to keep it working for awhile but more and more over the last several weeks I never knew if I would be able to keep it going.  He got me a small Lumix HD AVCHD Lite with a really good zoom lens on it.   Now I have to learn a new camera Smile

I have gotten a little quilting done on Going in Circles this past week but not a lot – I just love the colors of all of these circles.

005

Over the past several days I have also made two pineapple blocks for a total of 9 blocks finished – no idea how many I will make and if it will be couch size, queen size or what – we will see and I will keep working on them off and on during the upcoming year.

I had planned on getting to work on my Star Crazy quilt yesterday afternoon or today – but I am thinking that will be delayed until tomorrow.  We are talking of going to a movie this afternoon.  We do not like our local movie theater – it is filthy – sticky floors, bad smell, the people that own it made a lot of improvements about 10 years or so ago and then let it go badly once again instead of keeping up with it.  We heard there is a new place that opened in Conway about 45 minutes from us so thought we would check it out.  In recent years we drove to Little Rock when we wanted to see a movie and would spend the day – lunch, shopping, movie ect.  This place is closer so that will make it nice if we like the theater.

Oh I totally forgot to mention that I was the winner in another give away from Spun Sugar Quilts- my stack of fat quarters should arrive next week – I will show a photo then.  Around Thanksgiving I won a quilting book from Abbey Lane Quilts – the book is called Fab Five due to the holidays it got lost on a table in their office and arrived the day before Christmas.  I will take a photo of when I post about the other win when I get it.  I have been so lucky in give aways this year.  I have lost track of how many I have won but I do know I have won a lot of good stuff this year.  I guess I need to keep leaving comments on all these really good blogs that I keep finding!

Merry Christmas Everyone

by Karen on December 25, 2010

in quilts

We are getting some snow flurries right now giving us a white Christmas – the weather forecast shows no snow at all, no rain either – I doubt it will last long – pretty though!

I hope everyone has a wonderful day today and gets everything that was on their list’s :)   Our day has been kind of off again on again.  Our son-in-law is down with a bad cold so they were going to delay visiting until Monday or Tuesday but Melanie called this morning and said she will be here for lunch after all as Ric  said that he will be sleeping most of the day so why didn’t she go visit.  She will not be here real long but will have lunch with us and open her present.  She is the daughter that lives closest to us about an hour’s drive away.

Our other daughter Jessica and her family went to the Smoky Mountains this year and are actually starting their drive back to Wisconsin today – not nice weather in some of the areas they are going through but they will stop and find a motel if need be.  They have been doing Christmas all week at the condo they were staying at.

I imagine late this afternoon after Melanie goes home I just might set up the design wall and start playing with the placement for the Star Crazy quilt.  I would like to get that top put together this coming week and have it put aside also to quilt sometime next year – or the year after :)

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Changed My Mind

by Karen on December 24, 2010

in quilts

Yes I know I said “Moda Candy Bars” yesterday but then this morning I was checking the 12 days of Christmas sales the Fat Quarter Shop was having to see what was on sale today and it was jelly rolls!!  I couldn’t pass up $17.50 for the two different kinds that I wanted.  So I used my gift card this morning and got 2 of Bunny Hill’s “Lily & Will” one jelly roll in the blue/brown theme and one in the pink/brown theme.  Not my usual type of fabric but these will make perfect baby quilts.  I also got 2 yards of two different kinds of fabric that was on half price.  I ended up having to pay for a $1.60 plus the shipping & handling.  I was on the computer at about 8:30 ordering and the computer was moving so slow through that site – I think everyone else was on there ordering also – I sure hope they have the ones I ordered when it comes time for them to fill my order – I never know how they keep track of that if the computer keeps up as people order or what.

If I happen to get another gift card for the FQS I will get the candy bars – or maybe just because I like them Smile

Today is my last busy baking day – I just finished the dough for the yearly coffee cake.  It sits in the refrigerator all day now to rise (yes always seems weird to me not to put in a warm place) and I will put it together and bake it this evening.   Also later today I’m going to make a couple loaves of bread and about a dozen dinner rolls from the bread dough.  I really liked the last batch of bread I made and will make that one.  I will try to remember to post the recipe after Christmas.

Tomorrow we are having our main meal at 1 so that Melanie and Ric can be here for awhile and then run over to his mom’s house for the evening meal.  We always divide up the day like that.  Nothing traditional this year, I’m tired of holiday meals twice in 4 weeks.  We are having chicken Parmesan, roasted potatoes that have a spicy touch to them, asparagus and dinner rolls.  We eat so much garbage these last couple days we don’t need anything heavier than that.

I got to work on the pineapple blocks last night – this will be an on again off again project all year – I get tired out from paper piecing – not my favorite method but I like these blocks.

The Blocks so far – scraps from my boxes are being used for this project.  The whites are all different kinds of white/cream – whatever is in there.

002

The sewing machine set up in front of the window, it was already dark outside so I didn’t get to enjoy looking out the window but I could tell it will be different already.  I might work on another block today – the switch out from computer table to sewing machine table was done in less than 5 minutes:

What to buy

by Karen on December 23, 2010

in quilts

I told you all I won a gift card from the Fat Quarter Shop – I have been looking and looking at all of the goodies to buy and believe me it is hard!  I think I have found what I want though – the 2011 Twin pack of Moda Candy Bars - this is 2 boxes of  8 packages of 40 fabrics each that measure 2 1/2 by 5 inches.  This would be something like the sampler box that I got last year and enjoyed so much except those were 2 1/2 inch squares.  The candy bars are one box of light fabrics I believe and 1 box of dark fabrics – they would be so much fun to play with.  Not available until January but I think I can wait until then easy enough!  Don’t you just love how they name all of their stuff after things to eat! Everything looks so delicious! :)

I have made as many Christmas cookies as I wish to make – I have already gained a couple of unwanted pounds around my waistline this past month and really must get back to a regular routine of exercise after the holidays – for some reason I almost always fall off the exercise wagon the month of December – guess too busy baking and shopping.

I think this afternoon I will get to work on my scrappy pineapple blocks that have been sitting aside just about the whole year – I do love them and want to make enough to make something out of them, but yet have not spent hardly anytime working on them.  When I was organizing the cabinets I assigned one drawer to them – the envelope has the paper for paper piecing and I have the pattern saved someplace on my computer although if I can’t find it I can scan it from one of the patterns that I already have printed.   These are 6 1/2 inches I believe.

001

So I guess I might make up a list of what to work on next year.  I stuck with the 2010 list really well.  Do you all make out a to do list for your quilting year? And if you do do you stick with it!! Smile

Happy Dance!!

by Karen on December 22, 2010

in quilts

I just got an e-mail from Michelle over at Quilting Gallery to let me know that I won a $50 gift card from The Fat Quarter Shop.  This prize was from her 3rd birthday bash anniversary – not the one you all were voting on but a different giveaway she was having.  I can’t believe my luck – I will be thinking and looking through the shop to see what I want to get.  Such a great time to stock up as there are so many sales going on.  Of course with as many give aways as I enter I guess I am bound to win some but my luck has been really good lately.  I am also expecting a book in the mail any day now from another give away that I won recently.   I will show that when it gets here.

I got a little quilting done last night but mainly I enjoyed my day off of mostly no sewing yesterday by doing yard work and reading.  I’m almost done with my book though so I am sure to get back to sewing soon!

Enjoy your day everyone!!  I didn’t get any baking done yesterday so I guess I better get to it today (maybe – we really do not need a lot of cookies it is mainly just us and two extra on Christmas day).
