Today I am going to be piecing some batting together. I have one king size batting available and I do not want to cut into it for the small Farmers Wife quilt which is only 52 x 65 inches! I know that one of the pieces in this stack of small pieces of batting is an ok size and I will zigzag sew pieces of batting together to make a large enough piece to use. I use the sewing machine to do this – do you?

After using up a lot of very small pieces of batting to wrap Christmas decorations in I didn’t realize my small pile of useable pieces had gotten so small! I will need to start searching the on line shops to see what the prices of batting is right now and order some to keep on hand for small quilts. I normally get king size batts and cut them for small quilts – getting 3 or 4 quilts made from each package, but I think I need to start just ordering more useable sizes.
Do you baste your leftover batting together to use in a quilt – what do you do with your left over pieces – I have heard some people toss them in the trash, some use them on their floor mops for dusting the hard wood floors, some use them for dusting the house and some like me use them by sewing them together and using them for small quilts. What do you do with your odd bits of batting?
At some point today I will be prepping more circles. I got home from my visit to my mom around 5 PM so after putting together an easy meal I watched some tv to unwind and got more circles on the Joseph’s Coat quilt. I also woke up early this morning so I started to prep more circles as I was watching the early news and having a cup of coffee. I took this photo of Joseph’s Coat last night but then added more circles so what you see in this photo, there is now about another 1/2 row of circles done.

I never did get the next color of red pieces cut out. I’m not sure if I will get to that today. I might just work on the batting and the circles. I will get back to quilting on Star Crazy also – my fingertips have healed up a bit again so I think they are ready to get back to work.

I have sewn pieces of batting together, however I generally use them for dusting, making small things like coasters and craft items.

Oh I also use them to make pattern pieces for craft items.

I’ve never sewn batting together, but I have good-sized pieces crammed in bags all over the place! I’m glad I saw your post today, it reminds me I need to get them to a usable size, then use them! Not only will it get rid of clutter, it will make me use up what I have.

I usually don’t keep a lot of stored batting but purchase as needed, therefore getting the size needed – I don’t usually have huge pieces left but if they are large I keep – I haven’t sewn them together, though -I have used them for when making pillow shams, smaller decorative pillows, etc.
I am going to be very ambitions and make the granddaughters quilts for 2012 Christmas so I will be very busy – should begin on these this week – won’t take long on these though – these won’t be complicated patterns and I need to make 4 – all will be twin size. And I need to make one for my sister – she wants one for the foot of her bed in certain colors – I have that pattern ready to go!
Tiny bits of batting get thrown away, but I do use odd bits for bags and potholders and other little things. I piece larger pieces together with that iron-on tape. Works well for me. I probably do keep more than I need but one never knows!
Yes, I zig zag pieces of batting together usually by machine. I thought I’d try some of that tape that is sold specifically for the purpose of fusing pieces together. Haven’t got it yet, just ordered it Mon.
I buy queen size and get 2 or 3 child size quilts, but still have pieces left. Those that are too small for piecing go into table runners, or placemats or tea mats. I discard tiny pieces.
As an aside, I see you are still calling Joseph’s Coat quilt, Joseph’s Coat. You, at one point was thinking of a new name. What was your final thought on that?
No matter what you call it, it is gorgeous. : )
Yes, I sew pieces together for small quilts, and do buy large battings to cut into sizes for baby quilts. And I use really narrow pieces for trapping dust bunnies!
I sew smaller bits together to make larger pieces, I never thought of using the zig-zag on my machine, but I will try that next time. I save all the scrappy bits to use as stuffing for pincushions, soft toys etc.
I turn smaller pieces of batting into table runners wherever I can. Or pillow covers. I’ve been thinking about making mini quilts to frame.
Wow Karen, You sure have been getting a lot accomplished!

I’ve sewn it together using zig zags, seems to work fine!
I use bits for other craft projects, like zip bags or phone holders. Also can be used for stuffing if you make soft toys
What beautiful quilts. You mentioned your sore fingertips. When mine get sore I rub them with Vicks ointment. Because it is greasy I use it before going to bed. For me it has really helped. Even works on paper cuts. Read this in a quilter’s tip sometime ago.
I’ve sewn larger pieces together. Smaller pieces are used for small quilts. Or they are used in my Swiffer.

Like others, I sew strips together to make a large enough piece to use in a quilt.

I’ve never sewn pieces together mostly because I like poly bats so they don’t sew together very well. I do save the decent size pieces for smaller projects.
Crispy
I never thought of doing that with batting. Although i do make small table covers with it but not as big as that one. Nice color combination by the way. You are really so crafty and imaginative.

I use small bits of wadding for postcards and other small makes. Or I cut them up to use as stuffing in pin cushions. Anything too small to use goes in the rag bag at the local charity shop and they sell it to recycling companies…JC is looking great!
