Bow Tie Medallion

quilts

Well I think I have done as much as I want to on this quilt.  It might look better on the top corner if I would bring the applique pieces down further on each side towards the middle of each border – but I am tired of making these little pieces and I think it looks ok.  Believe me it is so hard to take a photo in my living room – we moved the heavy end table to the hall way just so I could take a photo.

So after all that stitching on those little hexies should I take the top right corner applique pieces off or leave them on?  I’m going to start the applique on the flowery corner border first and decide as the days go by – I guess I can always make more off and on during the week if it seems necessary to extend those in that corner.  To make it so that the pieces on the right hand corner came more towards the middle I would have to make about 8 to 10 more for each side – (16-20 more) I do have enough scrap fabric left over.

I say go for it with the extra hexies. They will add balance to the quilt.

I agree with Sue. I think it would look a bit odd if you don’t…. but of course; you to decide! :)

If that’s the top of the quilt and it were on a bed with pillows, would the hexies be that visible? My vote would be to leave them off the quilt and save them for another project. No matter what, it’s a beautiful quilt.

I agree with the above, if the quilt will have pillows, no hexies, or put them closer to the border as your lovely applique is in the opposite corner.
You may need more hexies, but wait and see when you get what you have on there. YOu will be sewing from the corner out, right?
Maybe it needs to rest a bit, work on something else for a few days, it will come to you.
All in all, I think your quilt is BEAUTIFUL!
    Take care, Leslie

I agree, this quilt is looking great!!! Love the added applique hexies. It really has added appeal to the quilt. Like you (and not seeing it in person), I don’t know if you need more or not so I would also go with what you have said you will do …. start on the other corner applique and revisit what to do after that is finished. Sometimes “less is more” and you don’t want to “take away” from the vine and flowers applique corner. I kind of like the off-balance look as it makes me really look at the center work also. Whatever your decision, I don’t think you can hurt the overall wonderful look of this quilt.

I like it without the hexies. I don’t think it needs balance. The quilt is beautiful. The decision is yours and it will come to you.

It is wonderful looking as is, but if you remove or add it will still be wonderful. Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to see your final decision.

Karen, I love the quilt without the hexies. Have you tried them closer in or considered repeating the bottom applique on the top?

  • Vivian Oct 28, 2012

I really thought you were planning to repeat the floral border at the top corner. I think that would give it great balance. Either way, I really love the look of the quilt and the colors.

It’s so beautiful, love the borders!

It’s beautiful, whatever you decide to do. If it was me, I would either extend the hexies to the middle, or replace them with more flower applique. (I think I like the flower idea better). It wouldn’t have to be as much – just a small accent of flowers. But like everyone else has said, your quilt is gorgeous and will look great regardless of what you choose.

What a beautiful quilt. Is there a pattern for this or did you develop yourself?

A little later with the comment then some but the Hexies up at the top corner just don’t seem quite right. I like the applique in the other corner may be a smaller version of the applique at the top but the row of Hexies just kind of look like an after thought. My opinion and it will be wonderful what ever you decided. LOL it is your quilt obviously.

Maybe you could add a vine and put a little more space between these and not have to make more. lol
