This morning I got the binding machine stitched to Dizzy now on to the hand stitching part of it. The binding matches the sashing.

I don’t know if I ever showed the backing fabric – it is just as wild as the front prints are and it is a little easier to see the quilting stitches on the back though then the front.

I was going to try a new way to me of attaching the binding but I thought I would mess it up too much so I didn’t do it. I saw this on Pat Sloan’s blog – attach to the back of the quilt and fold it over to the front and use a buttonhole stitch – I did a practice piece here to see how it work. This is on scraps – the front looks ok, but the back
She freely admits that she doesn’t always do it perfectly and that that is ok with her – but having never done it before I thought I might want to practice the method a bit more before I would try it on a quilt size project.

the back – if you don’t stay exactly on track it looks like this! – Nope I think I need more practice. Have any of you tried this method for binding by machine?

The view out the window while I was machine stitching – the birds are flocking all over the place fighting to get the seed. I am filling my feeder almost daily. I really need to take the screen off of this window so I can get better photos of the birds and put it back up when the warm weather comes – it’s just in Arkansas you never know when the warm weather might be – to the point of opening windows – it might be next week for a day or two or next month!!

I love that backing ……. do you, by any chance, remember what it is??????? I would pursue it for sure!!!!!! As for me, I’ll stick with the more traditional binding application (the one you are doing!).

It has been a few days since I visited and wow you have been busy. I have read about this binding method but have not tried it as I love the peace and pace of handsewing the binding.
I’ve done many bindings that way Karen, and while they look “mostly” good, you will never land the stitching exactly in the ditch 100% of the time.

Love your backing fabric! It looks great with the front too.
I have done that method of binding a couple times and the key to it is using a busy backing fabric and a binding and thread color that blend well with it. Then when it gets a little off track you never notice it. It think it is a little stiff however with that stitch so I will use it sparingly.

I actually got the backing fabric from Hobby Lobby and it is made for their stores – I must admit I don’t buy much fabric from them but when I saw this print I thought it would go well with this quilt.
Karen love your latest quilt.. In the picture of the birds, I noticed your Gold Finches are beginning to turn. We are in West Tennessee and ours are too, not as much asw yours.. It does seem early to me for the colors to be changing.
Congratulations on almost finishing! Doesn’t it feel good? I have stitched the binding by machine but have generally used a straight stitch. That way, if my seam isn’t perfect, it just looks like quilting on the back. It’s not “quilt show” quality, but works well for babies and others who will be washing with wild abandon.
I haven’t turned my computer on the past couple of days. You have really been busy. I was on the couch all day yesterday reading (fighting of the flu or something) and kept having to remind myself that even though it was a dreary day, we need the rain terribly. We are still under a mandatory water ban. I would hate to start summer off next year on one.

My sister and I used to stitch in the ditch the binding on the front side of the quilt folded over to the back. I finally gave it up because no matter how careful I was, the stitching line on the binding on the back side of the quilt was never, ever straight.
I have tried doing the binding by machine a few times and always end up ripping it out and redoing by hand so don’t bother trying anymore. I can never stay 100% on target and it drives me crazy.

I learned that method years ago, used it on 2 quilts then decided it wasn’t worth the effort…I just like the look of a nicely finished, clean, hand stitched edge on the back.
