That’s right I pushed through all the problems and the Tumbler picnic quilt is ready for binding!! Finally in order to get this quilt done without skipping stitches I had to take the needle out and clean off the adhesive after every two rows that I quilted. I did this with a speck of machine oil that was suggested to me and rubbing it on a cloth. Everything today was done without the walking foot also. I really think it was a combination of the walking foot bar sticking (the part over the screw that holds in the needle) and the adhesive sticking to the needle. I did trade out a size 11 needle for a size 16. I do not know if that helped. Maybe I put way too much spray adhesive on the quilt? I am not experienced with that stuff.

the backing

this quilt has taken me one week to make from start to getting the quilting done. It is 45 by 58 inches – now to get the binding on it – but you know what – I’m going to wait for tomorrow to do that ![]()

You do need a light touch with the adhesive spray. I will only use 505, as I’ve found the others are just too gummy, especially June Taylor brand. I don’t use any of it often as I don’t think it is good for my lungs. I also use Sewer’s Aid lubricant generously when I am free motion quilting. You might try that if still have trouble.

I like the way the quilting shows up on the back of the tumbler’s quilt! I can’t wait to get mine done! But I have to trudge on through the quilting of the one I am doing now! Same issues only hand quilting with the gummy needle – won’t use the iron on batting again! Do not like it! I will go back to either pin basting or sew basting and use my regular cotton batting!
Yayyyyyy…. way to go! Congrats on your finish!!!!
Congrats on the finish!
If you decide to do the machine quilting again, you could try quickly loading it onto your frame and doing some large basting stitches by hand versus using the spray or pins. Then you can take it off the frame and do the machine quilting without having to worry about the spray gumming up your machine or about quilting over pins.

I also only use 505 and a light touch with the spray. I haven’t ever had problems with the adhesive sticking to the needle with the 505. It also doesn’t have the strong smell that some have. It looks great!
It looks great! I will never use such spray, not good for health or environment. I will always stick to pins and thread basting before quilting.

It came out great even with the problems you had! Hand quilting is so much easier lol.
