All of the rows are now sewed together – the top is complete! A small top – I added nothing from the stash this is a complete layer cake used up with very little scrap – nothing worth tossing in the bins. Finished is 45 x 58 big enough for a picnic table I do believe although I actually haven’t measured one
I’m sure it will suit our needs. I just need to cut the sides straight and it will be ready.

Today I will get backing cut from the stash – But I am not completely decided on the backing – maybe I will do a large patchwork block back – I have plenty of fat quarters that I had never used that were either gifted, gotten on sale, in bundles that were left over ect – maybe I will do some thing like that? I don’t have anything quite wide enough by itself so I will do some cutting and piecing to make it big enough. I prefer a whole piece with no seams but seeing as I am going to be machine quilting straight lines it should work out ok.
I even went through all my batting scraps to see if I have enough to heat and press together – I normally do not bother with small bits but seeing as this is a picnic quilt and nothing fancy I thought I would give it a try. First I will get my backing ready and measured correctly then start to lay batting pieces on top of it and see what happens – if it is way too many pieces or not enough I will run over to Hobby Lobby and pick something up. I haven’t decided what color I will bind it with – I have nothing left of the layer cake and these backing fabrics don’t really match the front! If I do a patchwork back I might use black binding.

I was wondering what you are doing with the sides… didn’t come to my mind you just cut them, silly me!
Pretty and colorful picnic quilt.

Since it’s for a picnic, I’ll bring the lemonade. LOL
I “do” tumblers, Karen, and this one is so pretty. Will make any picnic bright and cheery

Karen do you use fusible batting? I noticed you said heat and press together the pieces. For the first time I will have to add some batting to the border edge on one side of the Batltimore Blue and was going to stitch the pieces together. So I am curious if you don’t use fusible batting how you do it?
I have not done a tumbler quilt, but it looks like a good way to use up a lot of varied fabrics and have them look great together!

How about just using muslin for the back. The red really pops in the photos….maybe red for the binding.
what some of you might be seeing in these prints is not red – there is not a red in here – orange prints and bright dark pinks are scattered though out.
I think it is a happy quilt!

Something like this project is so ‘freeing’……like piecing the batting from many pieces. That’s exactly what I do and it’s really so much fun. This will be such a joy to use where ever it gets placed. Love it!!!! Hugs, Doreen
