Binding on Jane

Dear Jane – “Insanity Revisited”, quilts

Yesterday morning I figured I better buckle down and get busy on the binding for Insanity Revisited – putting binding on the quilt is not a favorite part of quilting but it must be done to use the quilt!  I brought the quilt to the dining room table so I could measure – when doing scallops it really isn’t that much different then a straight quilt.  This quilt is square so measure one side with a tape measure around each scallop and corner and multiple by 4 add about 50 more inches at least just so you do not have to add more later if you messed up.  I am linking up to Freemotion by the River today and Esther’s Wow.

The video link that I gave the other day for bias binding is the easiest method I have ever used!! it is a saver and I have added it to the tutorial links on the side bar of the blog. In no time flat I had it all cut and then on to sew the pieces together.

Last night as we watched a movie I got one and a half sides hand stitched on the back.

I had said that this year I really needed to get back to exercise and I bought a fitbit meter that reads your steps for workout, it gives calories burned etc. also – I bought the cheapest one as I don’t need one that tells me I am not sleeping enough and whatever else it does – I just want to make sure I walk a lot and do the 10,000 steps a day recommended (this equals about 5 miles a day).  I’m pleased that each day since I got it I have walked further – checking my steps off and on during the day reminds me to get moving even if that means walk around each room in the house a dozen times.   I got over 10,000 steps today – good for me!

Jane looks beautiful! 🙂 You’ve gotten a lot done in regards to the binding, as well!

I’ll be honest and admit that putting binding on non-straight edges (such as scallops) intimidates me, a lot. I’m planning on making a DWR in the near future and will need to use a bias binding … I will need to get my nerve up, won’t I? 😉

Wow! You are not wasting any time on that binding! I have a Fitbit Flex and love it! Sometimes I forget to wear it but when I do it is nice to know how many steps that I get per day.

Karen….With all you do in a day (quilt related), how do you manage to get 10,000 steps in? I have one of those counters also, and I’m only getting about 5,000 steps. What is your secret?

I’m going to miss seeing this beautiful quilt now that you are finished. I’m working on mine with a group of gals from my neighborhood. Mine was started years ago just using the book and drafting patterns. The gals have a software program, and I’m trying to figure out whether it is worth the price. What did you use?

Karen, thanks for sharing how you did your bias binding and measured for it… that is what I was thinking but have a bias binding coming up in the future so will use this tute and your info when I do! Hope you enjoy your fitbit… good for you getting those steps in!

Insanity Revisted is really looking pretty with the binding on! Good for you.

And good for you, increasing your steps every day. It feels like I’ve done fewer steps every day since Christmas when I got my fitbit – I think I have the same one as you. It does allow you to add various exercises like yoga, vacuuming, etc., so that helps me a little. We have yoga tomorrow for the first time in weeks, and I’m so looking forward to it. We do need to get in better shape after th eholidays!

Wow….all that…..I forgot what I wanted to say. Oh, thanks for the binding tip.

And, I am waiting for the new Fitbit that tracks your heartrate. Frank has a-fib and it will help him to know what is happening.

    Enjoy stepping 10,000 times!

Your quilt is gorgeous! Binding isn’t my favourite quilting task either but it sure is satisfying to put in that last stitch and actually use the quilt!
