Quilting & Piecing

Handful of Scraps, Love Entwined – Esther’s BOM

Mike took a photo of me quilting last night that I thought I would share – you can see I do not pay attention to anything but my quilting and the Ipad with whatever show I am watching!  Working way over on the left side of the frame glad I was able to move on over, it gets a little warm when I am over in the corner.  Back to brown hair – I couldn’t stand the gray/white one more month – I’m surprised I lasted 2 years – it made me feel so old.

All of these neutral hexies are now sewed into rows so next up the rows get stitched together.  I do believe then I will take the large piece off the wall and I will have two areas of neutrals to stitch to the body – then start working on the many “flowers” that go around it.  I am linking to Sew Fresh Quilts today and Quilt Fabrication: Midweek Makers and My Quilt Infatuation.

Quite a few zinnia’s to be cut and put in a vase.  I choose my funky vase that I got out in Williamsburg many years ago at a Pottery place that my sister tells me is still in business but a new location.  The vase was a reject as the sides had collapsed in at the top but for a dollar or whatever I paid for it I thought it was well worth the uniqueness of it.    The zinnia plants have grown to about 5 feet and if I want more flowers they certainly needed to be cut – might get more before the weather chills off this fall.

I did work a little on the tote bag applique to practice my zigzag stitch – the machine did work so whatever I thought was a problem I guess after it rested for 6 months it went away LOL – I don’t think the witch is working out with the hair I gave it – after I had ironed it down I knew it didn’t look right but I thought maybe with black thread outlining it – it would be ok – it wasn’t so back to the drawing board with that.  I don’t care for the really little zigzag stitch so I might change over to a tiny blanket stitch – now you can understand why I do not wait until the last minute – I’m not real good at tote bags and things – I just like quilting.  I’ll show a photo after I practice a little more and get it figured out.

Reading about your quilting… yardwork…. other stuff.. daily… is a nice way to start the day.. even though I am a political junky,, and have to get all the snarky news, reading about your hand quilting is a return to sanity. Reading is one of my regular pastimes… knowing what others are reading is certainly interesting.. one of my all time favorites is Francesca’s Kitchen… empty- nest, widowed Italian-Am grandma babysitting two grade schoolers and using her spaghetti sauce and peach upside down cake to instill discipline and trust in the rebellious kids.. and their single mom. An old book still in our great city library. Some recipes.

It’s great to see this “behind the scenes” peek! You are making beautiful progress on those hexies. They certainly are taking over!

    • Karen Sep 21, 2016

yes the hexies are growing and growing – more things will need to be taken off of the design wall to make room soon

You are a very focused quilter. I love your large frame. What shows do you watch when you are working?

I answered Kathi separately and then thought maybe others are interested in a list of shows? some I have watched: Cover Affairs, NCIS, Black List, Breaking Bad, Good Wife, House, Greys Anatomy, Scandal, House of Cards, Longmire, Luther, Orange is New Black – and the list goes on and on – I always have something on the Ipad while I quilt – I am not necessarily always watching, more like listening – it just seems to help me stick with quilting while listening to something

It’s fun to finally see you at your quilt frame!!! And the solution to not feeling old with gray hair is to never look in the mirror LOL!

one can control the looks in the mirror but not all the camera shots that this family loves to take at gatherings — it is odd how a change in hair color can change the way people in doctors offices talk to you and other places too – has one ever noticed that as you get older if you have gray/white hair that nurses and others talk louder to you, try to explain more and generally just talk to you like you do not understand – then you see them a couple weeks later with brown hair and it is different! weird experience

I like both quilts, but especially like the circle quilt. The colors are so fun!

My hair started going from a dark rich brown with beautiful red highlights to white in my late teens
So in my twenties I started coloring my hair dark
Then in my late twenties I had so much white and fast growing hair if I didn’t color the roots every 2 weeks it would look like my hair was growing above my scalp
So I went from a dark brown to a platinum blond
Then I had a head injury with stitches so I had to stop using hair products and by then my “natural” hair was lighter than the bleached blond I had become
So I stopped all that coloring and bleaching and for me l love the feel of my hair and that I don’t have to worry about getting it done or doing it myself
I really didn’t like the feel of my hair or the smell of all that hair stuff.
Now I don’t have to worry about any of that stuff especially having to use special shampoos I can buy the cheap stuff .
But for years I was a beauty shop regular and it was important at the time
Now I am more into comfort than looks.

I love seeing the work on your quilt! It’s so lovely! And your hexagon quilt is coming along beautifully! It’s so enjoyable to see your progress! Thank you for sharing!

Chris walks in on me all the time and scares me to death. He doesn’t mean to but if I’m quilting and listening to a audiobook I don’t sense anything around me.
