Piecing Diamonds

Handful of Scraps, Quilty 365 – The Final Frontier, Williamsburg Beauty

Finally maybe this is going to work after all without taking a week off to think about it.  I was busy yesterday making some diamonds for the Williamsburg Beauty to get a better idea of the direction I was going and thank you all for your wonderful helpful ideas.  I took down several of the narrow borders that I showed yesterday and like this version better.  So Border #1 or Border #2 for the background color of the Diamond border?  I haven’t made up my mind but I’m ready to get more diamonds made and get this issue settled!!

These are the Diamonds on background #1 – medium beige – the background well not really be seen that much as the diamonds will be pieced to pieces of it – I just have the strips hung there to get an idea of which color I want.

close up – I have just gotten started making diamonds so there will be more of a mixture of color as I get going.

Border #2 – it is giving the quilt a much lighter look .  With either version there will be at least one or three more borders around this still – I might get that paisley brown in there yet – I have no red colors that looked right – and that was a good idea – a kind of rusty red but nothing on the shelf.  The colors of the diamonds do show up better using the lighter color background I think.

A close up of this one – is actually a off white with a beige print in it but that doesn’t show up well.  I did like the suggestion of adding a rusty color red in here and possibly might add a very narrow – like one inch red between the diamonds and the brown.

A few more big hexies completed and just laying in place – a lot more work to go in Handful of Scraps still.

The Final Frontier was rolled down once again – getting closer and closer to an end!

You are right- number two – the lighter- allows the diamonds to show up better! So pretty!

      thanks Teri!

Now I like the lighter background – without the gold of yesterday. I like the thin reddish border idea, too.

some more playing today I’m sure!

I feel as if we are in your sewing room all going back and forth while you stick things on and off the wall lol! 🙂 You have cookies in the oven for us later on, right? 🙂

I like the lighter background for the diamonds…they pop more that way.

I already ate the cookies LOL — yes it is nice getting everyone’s opinions – it kind of helps the process along – I was hoping no one was getting tired of this project LOL — I’m looking for a rusty red on the shelf to see if I have one for a skinny strip before the diamonds – the light works doesn’t it!

Karen, I am so pleased you tried it with just one brown border even if it was only to see a photo of what I imagined. Glad you like it. Like the others I favour the lighter too but then you might find another similar shade in your playing which you prefer more. The other strips still have a chance to play nicely further on. Have fun, it is looking good.

sometimes taking a photo and then stepping back and looking at it on the computer really helps – I do hope I can make that yellow piece work later on as I do like it but not right now.

Here’s another idea. What about using both backgrounds. The lighter one on the inside edge and the darker one on the outside edge. It brings both the light and dark backgrounds from the center out to the border.
It also might be way too busy!

that is an interesting idea – I can put a strip behind it to see what it looks like – after all all of this is just pinned in place right now

Did you think about tilting your diamonds tip to tip? I think it would look a little “lighter”. Looking good.

Swooze what a great idea! just switched them around with the two colors like Vicki suggested and it looks great – Mike took one look and said he likes them better than way – a plus – less diamonds to make!!

Karen, it is so much fun following along on your quilting projects! And I am really enjoying Williamsburg Beauty, with all its different aspects….and the “conversation” through the comments…it is like everyone is all together in the same room, talking in person! Cannot wait to see the next installment on this one…..

an on line quilt group helping me with decisions on this quilt – it has all been so helpful and seeing as I’m not in a rush it is working out great!

Gosh I’m not a quilter, but I have enjoyed this post.
The colours are so good and it’s been interesting to read everyone’s thoughts and ideas.

    Take care

    All the best Jan

I like the new look with the two borders removed . The lighter background makes the diamonds show up. It it will be interesting to see the diamonds going the other direction or maybe alternating: one pointing up and one pointing sideways (but that may get too busy. hmmmm
It’s nice to be in the peanut gallery just providing ideas and not doing the work. 🙂

I am just in lust with your scrappy diamonds!!! However you decide to set them… I do like the lighter beige better though… so this round of handful of scraps will be mostly the colorful flowers with less neutrals? Congrats on rolling frontier too! Kathi
