It Was a Hexie Sort of Day

Handful of Scraps, scrap quilts

xmas1No baking to do, no company, a dark dreary day light rain kind of day – even though it was Christmas it was a quiet day.  I read awhile and worked on numerous quilts and got a bit of cutting done with the Accuquilt for the more hexies.  I need 5 more hexies to finish this outer ring around the Handful of Scraps quilt before I start to join them all and attached to the center – then the whole quilt needs to be squared off – a bit of work still.

This one I had basted and started to stitch – the blue is a bit darker than it shows and the green is pretty accurate.  I have enough hexies for 5 more flowers in the box.

Before I did that hexie above though I had made several more of the tiny ones and put them all up on the wall to display – you can sure see how much smaller they are!  Linking up to Cooking Up Quilts: MCM#53 and Love, Laugh, Quilt and Em’s Scrapbag.

These little ones are made with 1/2 inch hexies – and they will just grow for awhile – I have no idea what I will make with it nor how large it will get – I am using scraps and have a lot of them already cut and put in a box.  I will need to cut some more freezer paper templates to go with them as I am almost out of the papers and seeing as I am not sure what I will be doing with them I will keep the papers in for now.

I also sat at the machine for a little bit and got 5 more 16 patch blocks done for the Scrappy Stars – I need to cut out more of the star points though before I go any further.

The one spur of the moment gift I made was this tea cozy for Melanie and Richard.  Along with it a can of tea.  Their cozy was a really tight fit for their tea pot so this one is a bit larger.  It was sitting on the table at an angle it doesn’t slope off like that on the edges as it looks in the photo.  I did wool applique using a pattern by Michele Hill from her May Morris book – this was a flower pattern for a napkin.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas – it got up to 65 degrees here – I roasted a chicken for supper and had to open several windows which stayed open until we went to bed and had ceiling fans going – not an every year Christmas occurrence here – usually a bit chilly.

Beautiful Christmas Day church service, to begin the day, then a family gathering for supper at GDs home. Always special to be with loved ones. Packing today for our exit early tomorrow a..m. for TX (hope to be there by week’s end). Taking one task at a time at this point. Yesterday’s 40s temps with heavy rain seemed really odd…..and messy! A fair amount of black ice on Saturday eve. High winds today and falling temps (back to some type of reality, I guess!!) occurring as I write this. Sounds a tad menacing, actually!
    Luv the “mini” hexies!

it will cool off a little bit here now but you should have a good drive to Texas now that the storms are past

I love those little hexies, Karen, they’re just too cute. The tea cozy is so pretty and bright too. You really did a lot, love those 16 patch blocks. I got a few more blocks made on my split rail quilt after making a small turkey dinner, hopefully more time today. Have a wonderful day, really enjoy reading about your day. Thank you for sharing with us.

they are fun to work with – I just have to control my time so I don’t strain my eyes with the hand work!

Adorable tea cozy and love those tiny hexie flowers. Wow…a very warm Christmas weather…but seems like your weather can swing in different directions pretty quickly.

the weather can be very weird here – it can be 35 one day and then two or three in the 60’s then back to the 40’s – dropping to 35 tonight! and I still have windows open right now and 71 in the house!
