Projects Still To Finish

Handful of Scraps, Love Entwined – Esther’s BOM, quilts, Retro Air Ship Propeller’s, scrap quilts

tn_FreeVintageImagesofChristmasClipArt32_jpgActually I have a lot of quilts started that still need finishing.  Of course the Postage Stamp quilt is in progress on the quilting frame and Williamsburg Beauty in the basket of tops to be quilted – so nice to only have one waiting in line.  The other projects though – well there are quite a few.  Yesterday I spent time putting  all on the design wall to look at them and see what stages they were in and what still needs to be done, a lot!  All of the quilts are scrappy.

Retro Air Ship Propellers on the left and Scrappy Stars on the right.   Both intended to be queen size quilts at this point – that is almost always my aim as I love the big quilts. I was going to try to make two of the air ship blocks a month but I do not think I got to them this month of December – I will try to do better next month.  The blue/green retro block on white is smaller than all the rest and will be put aside I do believe I prefer a little darker background fabric for these blocks and might try for more with a grayish or very light blue mottled type of color.

And the other 3 on going projects – the Scrappy Baskets top left. Love Entwined lower left and Handful of Scraps right and center.  I am making tiny hexies also from scraps but at this point they are kind of an after thought something to work on now and then with little pieces but I didn’t get them up on the wall as I had totally forgotten about them until I was writing the post.  I do want the baskets and the hexies to be queen size quilts and the Love Entwined at this point the aim is to finish the center square maybe add a border and call it quits it can be a small wall hanging or table topper-I just have no desire anymore to make the whole quilt – I just want this piece of it finished.  I am linking to MCM#52 Cooking up QuiltsLove, Laugh Quilt: Monday Making and Em’s Scrapbag.

Besides these quilts to finish – yes finish these 5 and already thinking of more LOL – well there are those 2 flannel quilt kits to make and I do intend to do those.  And I am thinking of beginning a new applique quilt sometime in the new year that will be a year or more in the making – not as difficult and challenging as the Love Entwine quilt – bigger blocks and a beauty for sure  – actually there are two I am thinking of and will need to be careful before starting too many for sure.  I will hold off on that historic quilt that I showed after I went to the Houston Show until later in the year as there is just too much going on in the quilting department before I jump into another major project. (the Hertfordshire Quilt)

Now a question for any of you who know very much about Insul-Bright Batting for hot pads and things.  Do you know if you use it in a Tea Cozy will it help keep the tea hot longer?  I need to make a new one and wondered before I get started putting it together what the experts out there thought?

All are wonderful as usual. For the off color propeller you could tea stain it to make it darker like the rest.

A lot of hot pads are in my past.. always lined with scraps of this & that. They work great , at least for me. A friend gave me one lined with a heat resistant fabric and it was too bulky and stiff. I like ones that I can easily get around the handle of my old cast iron skillet.. or the sides of a bread pan. BTW ..cast iron skillets are surging in popularity and recommendations by many experts since Lodge and Griswold brands are US made.. and the cast iron has health benefits.

what are the health benefits of cast iron pots?

  • Deb Dec 19, 2016

Nice to see the review / no help here on that question 🙂

Karen… Cooking in cast iron provides iron .. most diets are deficient… cast iron does not emit toxic chemicals as does non-stick Teflon… and , according to Eating Well editors.. one can use less oil…though I have no idea about that. My doctor told me long ago about getting iron from cast iron… as well as the dangers of Teflon. Nice to see your design wall.

Wow — you have so many projects going and active. I’ve got lots going but not so many truly active — lots of PIBs — projects in bags. Interesting info in your comment section today.

I’ve used the insul bright in tea cozies and it does seem to work well. You have an impressive group of projects going on. I love following what you are working on.

    • Karen Dec 19, 2016

thank you Joan – seeing as I have a package of it I will give it a try and see how it works.

you are the second to say that – I must get back to the Retro Air Ship Propellers!

  • Sandra B Dec 19, 2016

Love following along on all your projects, Karen!
It is encouraging to see someone else with so many things going at once….honestly, I don’t think I could ever work on one project at a time….I think the variety of projects just works for me…. Sometimes, I will work on a single project every day for a week or so, but I really prefer mixing it up. I think I get more done that way, if that makes sense.
I had forgotten about the Retro Air Ship Propeller blocks! Really like how they are progressing…. And if you really have fallen behind in what you planned to do, you will catch them up in no time…I am sure of that!
Didn’t get any baking done today….I had several gift cards to buy and had saved that task until today….it took forever! UGH!! The checkout lines were amazing….but I got them all and can start baking tomorrow. I just love the smell of cookies baking! I also need to make a rum cake….goodness, I am getting hungry just thinking about it!!
Probably won’t get much sewing done until next week….if I do get a minute to stitch, I will probably pull out the red work quilt (yes, I am still working on it!)…that is an easy pick up and put down project. I am hoping to get all the red work done by the end of the year…then, in 2017, I can do the pieced blocks to get it finished….that is the plan at least…we will see if I make it!!

    • Karen Dec 19, 2016

you will get done with your redwork – always nice to have a quilt like that to pull out to work on. I had almost forgotten about my retro air ships too LOL – no baking got done today – tomorrow and Wednesday for sure – Melanie and Aniya are coming over to help on Wednesday

thanks – I finally got some hexies back out to work on!

  • Elzaan Dec 20, 2016

Wow, lots of projects to look forward to in 2017!

I use the Insul-Bright in my cozies and they work well. It won’t keep the tea warmer forever, but it does extent the “nice tea temperature” a little while longer.

so glad I have a package on hand of the insul-bright – I am making one cozie for a present and will make myself a new one as well. Merry Christmas Elzaan and nice to hear from you.

I love those scrappy stars, Karen. I think I’m going to start making some in 2017, they really appeal to me. I too, have a Hexie project to work on. Your projects are really coming along. Enjoy your day.

    • Karen Dec 20, 2016

hexie projects tend to last awhile don’t they – stars are good for scraps

  • Cindy Dec 20, 2016

Love all of your projects. Where did you buy your insul-bright? I’ve been looking and can’t seem to find it. I’ve only checked a couple of places on line, but didn’t find it at either of them.

Thank you and hope that you and yours have a Merry Christmas!
