Williamsburg Beauty–Top Finished

quilts, Williamsburg Beauty

boy_apple_tree_largeThank goodness – finished it- this one has been hanging over me for awhile now.  I started the applique squares in early 2015 and they were to be part of the Caswell Quilt which has around 30 applique blocks or so? I quickly grew tired of it for some reason or another I really liked it when I first got the pattern – I seem to do this with applique quilts the last couple of years.  I changed my mind I don’t know how many times on how I was going to work the medallion design – finally I have said enough and it is as big as it is going to get – I had wanted queen size, instead it is 60 x 60 and I’m calling it finished.  (I am really trying to have some finishes before the end of the year and start the year with a smaller amount of projects which I know well rapidly grow)

Yesterday – another drizzly dreary day  – we were going to start to decorate the house for Christmas and didn’t – just didn’t feel like it I guess – better get going on it today!  But we did watch a movie – Captain Phillips with Tom Hanks and seeing as I got all my circles prepped in the morning I managed to get all my circles appliqued in place in the afternoon – during and after the movie.  So the quilt top is done!!  Linking to Em’s Scrapbag: moving it forward Monday and MCM#50:Cooking Up Quilts.

The circles – the top is not hanging quite straight on the wall but thank heavens it is straighter than it looks.  I wish I would have had enough fabric to miter the corners better on the print fabric but it was not to be – I figure when it is quilted and washed/dried and shrunk a little it will be ok – it is for home not a show.  I follow patterns better than try to design them myself LOL

And some more

My favorite applique block

All the fabric that I put in the project box that could be used in this quilt – so much left to put back on the shelves! I think I need to redo my shelves — I have a lot of quilt books on narrow shelves in the entry to the bedroom – I think I need to move the books to shelves in the living room and have the shelves going into the bedroom have fabric on them instead.

Thank you all so much for the big response the last couple of days for the give away – it continues through Wednesday morning when I will select the winners with the random generator.  Leave your comment at this post if you want in.  81 entries as I write this last night – would be so nice to get to 100 by Wednesday morning – I am finding out where so many of you readers live – it is so interesting to see where you are all from.

shopuntil you drop

Don’t forget  Craftsy is having a 12 day of Christmas sales –  different specials each day – I don’t know in advance what the sales will be you have to check just like I do – there might be something you want, I’m keeping an eye on it but trying to control myself.  Go in through the link on the side bar or above in the first paragraph.  A great way to try new things out at a lower price.

(I am compensated for any purchases made through my links.)

Williamsburg Beauty looks great – I think the size is a good one, and I love the soft colors.

I liked the movie Captain Phillips but had to chuckle when his wife is driving him to the airport. They live in Vermont and get off the interstate at some exit with a huge number. We only have about 20 exits on our interstate – the one for the airport is #14. The real Capt. Phillips spoke at our library before the movie came out, and he was funny and very modest. Tom Hanks does a good job with him.

how funny – we notice things about movies every now and then too and notice little mistakes – how nice that you got to meet the real Captain Phillips – I had meant to watch the movie for some time and never did.

thanks Deb, I am glad to call it finished – now it will sit in the “to be quilted” box for awhile I’m sure – at least I will be ending the year with only one quilt in that box! (one time I had 6)

Congratulations Karen on finishing your Williamsburg Beauty top, it is absolutely lovely.

    • Karen Dec 5, 2016

Congrats on finishing your quilt! It’s definitely okay to say ‘enough is enough’ and move on to the next project. Now this one is done, it’s the perfect size for snuggling and watching a movie, AND you get to work on something new! Win/win. 🙂

yes too many on the go to keep at one that I have had creative problems with!

  • Thimbleanna Dec 5, 2016

Well, no surprises, you’ve managed to get a ton of stuff done during my little absence. I LOVE the scrappy stars — the color you’re using on the points is a favorite. And your Williamsburg Beauty turned out … well … Beautiful!

  • Raewyn Dec 5, 2016

Oh wow! Great result – and a good solution for your change in feelings towards the original pattern! It sounds like I missed your giveaway post so I’ll pop over and see if you’ve hit 100 yet – and help you over that hurdle or beyond 🙂

    • Karen Dec 5, 2016

I got over 100 but drop on over anyhow! would love to include you in the give away

  • Dottie bishaw Dec 5, 2016

I can hardly wait to see it quilted, it’s a beautiful quilt!

    • Karen Dec 5, 2016

well it will sit aside for awhile, but I will get to it when the current quilt is quilted on the frame

  • audrey Dec 5, 2016

Love those borders, esp. the last one! It’s a great quilt top. Can’t wait to see you work your quilting magic on it!

    • Karen Dec 5, 2016

thanks Audrey! I am really glad to get that one done because now this week I will be plodding away machine quilting a big one with straight lines – I have to get it out of the way!! Trying to get some things finished before the end of the year and start the new year easier.

  • Evie H Dec 5, 2016

I love applique but never on a whole quilt. Like you’ve done with your lovely quilt, I always incorporate applique blocks with pieced blocks. Will you be hand quilting? (Silly question: Of course, you are!) Thanks for the journey.

    • Karen Dec 5, 2016

yes hand quilting on this one – some of the easy patterns I machine quilt with straight lines and in the process of starting one today but it is not a favorite thing to do by far!

  • Mary Ann Dec 6, 2016

Love how you finished your Williamsburg Beauty. I remember when you began the Caswell Quilt, thinking how beautiful it was but so overwhelming. Your adaptation is equally lovely and gave you a taste without doing the whole project. Bravo!

    • Karen Dec 6, 2016

yes sometimes we just have to admit we are drawn to a quilt but then do not really feel like making it. I have three more applique blocks that are finished so I need to think of something to use them for I do not do pillows as we do not use them, maybe a table runner.

  • Rebecca Grace Dec 6, 2016

Wow, Karen — your Williamsburg Beauty is gorgeous! I know the circles were “born of necessity” and not originally planned, but I think they really add a lot and look “on purpose” for sure.

    • Karen Dec 6, 2016

thanks Rebecca – I wasn’t going to say why I added the circles but I know a lot of quilters (newbies mainly) kick themselves around a lot for mistakes and think they have to have a total redo and I want to share that experienced quilters make mistakes too and aren’t perfect and show you don’t need to redo – but can add something instead!
