Hexies

Handful of Scraps, Retro Air Ship Propeller’s

I didn’t touch the Star quilt yesterday.  I thought I would give it a day or two thinking about binding and I needed a break from the sewing machine!  Thanks for all of your suggestions – I think I will be giving it a scrappy binding including two shades of aqua that I have left plus some of the dark blue from the back combined with other colors that are in the scrappy squares.

The hexie box came out last evening and I got to work finishing the hexie that I had been occasionally picking up the last couple days and got it finished.  Other than that it was reading, laundry and general laziness for a Saturday!

Joining in with Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching I will be working on my hexies today.  The four of eight hexies needed to finish the main part of Handful of Scraps are now done – four left to do  the grouping in the lower left corner are the ones being basted for the next one.  Also linking to Quilting is More Fun than Housework.

These 3 color groupings are for the final three needed.

These fabrics have been selected from the bins for the Retro Air Ship Propeller quilt – this will be for the next 5 blocks – I thought maybe I would get more done if I got more than one block selected at a time.  If I get to it today I will get these pressed and maybe cut out.

I frequently need a rest after machine quilting.. I can piece on a machine till the cows come home but quilting and pulling and pushing and guiding is another matter for me… enjoy your break and I look forward to seeing your scrappy binding sewn on then sewn down and see it once washed as well!!! You are making awesome progress and I am glad you are taking a well deserved break on this one…
As for your Handful of scraps… I love your hexi flowers! I look forward to seeing them all in place in the future… and I like how you are staying on task with your propeller project by pulling out some new fat quarters 🙂 I hope to start piecing a project that got way laid a couple years back in the coming week… we shall see as for now I am just working on Kaydence’s quilt and can’t see much else! lol Kathi

I always seem to need a break from the sewing machine after I do a quilt – not for piecing but for quilting like you say you do.

between hexies and getting some air ship blocks cut I think that will probably be all I do

I like to get a few blocks cut out ahead of time before putting the blocks together. I have a few quilts in line ready to be quilted but I have not been doing any quilting lately. I am recovering from a whiplash injury from a minor car accident and all that pushing and pulling would hurt too much!

all that pushing and pulling makes my neck and shoulders ache even though I take frequent breaks.

I love your Hexies and it’s always nice to have a project that can be brought out and put away at will!

    • Karen Feb 26, 2017

that is the nice thing about hexies, they pack so well into a small container and you can just grab it to wherever you want to work

It is great to have a hand work project ready to go… especially after a workout machine quilting a quilt! (I had my fitbit on my wrist on my last one and actually got steps in from all the tugging and pulling!)

    • Karen Feb 26, 2017

I leave my fitbit on all day and have always noticed that it counts my time at the sewing machine when machine quilting – it must be all that tugging and pulling – I’ve gotten a thousand steps or more at times!

I love your hexies Karen, they look really tiny? You remind me I’ve got a border to make for a hexie quilt I haven’t touched for, um, a year or two! Enjoy your stitching today 🙂

Stephie these hexies for Handful of Scraps are 7/8th inch – they are not too small to handle easily – from scraps I have a box of 1/2 inch hexies to work on just if I feel like it – which hasn’t been too often LOL – now they are little!

Lovely hexis! It’s nice to have some hand stitching on the go, I’m enjoying the slower pace just now, just me & my thoughts!

I love hexies too and at one time I never thought to EPP and always hand pieced with a running stitch – but there is something about the accuracy you get with EPP that I love

  • Dottie bishaw Feb 26, 2017

I love EPP for the accuracy too. Hexies are so fun to do. I’ve done and am still doing the stars with EPP too. I’m also doing the applique little baskets which I just started. Yours were so cute I just had to start some. I cut out 150 of them and 150 blocks, so I’ll be doing this in my spare time for some time. Lol! Glad your resting after all that work.

    • Karen Feb 26, 2017

I haven’t tried many other shapes for EPP than hexies – one day. I need to get back to the baskets some time – maybe next week after I get the binding done – trying to finish something!
