Murrieta Stars

Handful of Scraps, Murrieta Stars – Flannel, Postage Stamp Quilt

Time to get a new quilt started!  Finally I have cut into the fabric for the first flannel quilt kit that I bought over a year ago from Craftsy!  I am so pleased so far with the amount of fabric that was included – so far there seems to be triple the amount of fabric that I needed – wow!  I have heard bad things now and then about kits and have never gotten one with the intention to make the quilt that the pattern is for – normally I bought because I liked the fabric and it was on a sale so good I bought it.  This one I liked the pattern, the fabric and the price.  I have never worked on a flannel quilt so this will be a new experience.

It is suggested to cut out all the pieces needed before you get started – I am cutting out all that I need for the stars and the yellow squares in the main body of the quilt and the chain of squares making up the colorful border, when I get that part done I will cut out the bigger pieces of the yellow – I just don’t have space to stack everything so that is why those pieces are waiting.

All of this is leftover from those colors!!  included was 22 – 1/4 yard cuts I barely used even a third of those pieces-all of these stacked up is what is left over.    I have 3 pieces of 1/8 yard cuts for the next pieces to get ready and 2 1/2 yards of another color for more of the yellow’s.  The pattern looks like one shade of yellow but it is actually about 5 I think for my kit.  My lighting in the dining room is not true daylight color making the fabric colors off – the above photo shows it better – the lighting in the dining room is more the “yellow” type of lighting not the daylight color of the sewing room .  I will need to remember to shut the lights off when taking a photo and just use the flash instead when in the dining room.    I will get started with the machine work soon and work off and on with the hexies and the hand quilting also.  My other two projects are just going to wait a little while – they will be good for doing on the porch in the summer time – small applique blocks.

The first side of the Handful of Scraps is sewn in place – I don’t know if I will get the second side glue basted in place today – Mike is off pretty much most of  the next two weeks – his contract job is kind of flexible for hours right now.  He will be working off and on in the sewing room but we have outside stuff to do as well and he likes to go to the fitness center frequently too.  We want to run to Sam’s today to pick up some things in bulk and that is a 45 minute drive from us so most of the afternoon well be taken up with that and probably wandering around Home Depot too as we do not have one here.

A close up – by appliqueing with matching thread even with a whip stitch your stitches barely show.

And I finished last night off by working on the Postage Stamp quilt while watching tv on our big new 55 inch tv – our old 10 year old tv bit the dust and we got a new one – the old one was about 35 or 38 inches I guess – something like that – this big one sure is different!  Linking up to MCM#66 Cooking Up Quilts – Em’s Scrapbag Love Laugh Quilt

So glad you ended up with leftover fabric for the kit – very pretty! I got a kit for a wool owl pincushion which didn’t have enough wool for one part of the bird. It was very frustrating and I had to use wool from my stash. That was OK since I thought it turned out fine but not if I hadn’t had the tiny stash (my friend sells bags of odds and ends of different color families). I am finishing machine quilting a throw today and then I’ll start machine quilting another from my closet, I hope. Want to get a few done before I start something new although it sure is tempting!

A flannel quilt, that sounds warm and cozy for a chilly winter night. Starting a new quilt sounds like fun! Have a great day.

I love the flannel quilt kit. I looked at that on Craftsy too and was always sorry I never got around to buying it when it was on sale. Nice to know that there is extra material for this project. I have never sewn flannel so looking forward to your thoughts on it.

Such a great work space.. and is there a large wooden boat holding fabric on top of the table? The quilt it is setting on is a nice color combo in an attractive pattern. I
have seen that quilt in other pics an always liked it.

Your stars quilt will be gorgeous. Your hexie quilt is amazing. Are you sewing the flowers to the striped fabric or was that just for the picture?

Oh Karen, you never rest! I love it! You are such a inspiration to me. The flannel quilt is going to be beautiful. It’s good to know that the kit has extra fabric in it. I bought one from Craftsy last fall and I was hoping it wasn’t short of fabric because I had heard people say some kits were short, not Craftsy’s, though. It’s nice to have a variety of projects going, it makes it more interesting, at least to me. You have a busy week coming up with the garden and the sewing room! Take it easy sometime.

So glad I took a sewing break and came to visit your blog today… I am so interested in hearing how you like the flannel to piece and once finish to wash… I am curious and would love to do an all flannel project but am fearful of uneven shrinkage… I love the pattern you are using too! Enjoy it 🙂 I love how your first border on Handful looks finished… will you attach the opposite side next?? Curious on your process there 🙂
Enjoy your hubby working less and having a different schedule over the next couple of weeks… is your new tv a 4k… we recently had to replace one and got the 4k option on ours and LOVE the pic quality for an affordable price too! 🙂 Have a wonderful rest of your Monday my friend 😉 Kathi

Many quilters say they have trouble using yellow. I *love* yellow and your Murrietta Stars are going to look great! I like the postage stamps, too . . . We are in the market for a new TV. 19″ is getting hard to see!

Karen, I had completely forgotten about your flannel kit….I have always loved star quilts, and the flannel colors are great, so I am looking forward to following along as you work on this one…glad to hear that you have plenty of fabric in the kit. I am anxious to hear how you like working with flannel.
In one of your recent posts, you mentioned Melanie’s new job, but I did not comment on that day….so, here is a belated “congratulations” to her!!

You are truly an inspiration Although you start new quilts regularly you just keep on with the others till they are finished- I procrastinate along the way and put things away for far to long. Then I become scared of my own projects!
