Quilts and Enjoying Outdoors

Baking/cooking, gardening, Handful of Scraps, Postage Stamp Quilt

I got Handful of Scraps back out to work on the second border – I never did get it appliqued in place I had got started working on the stars and the quilting on the Postage Stamp quilt and got side tracked.  Would you believe I started blogging 10 years ago!! Wow time flies.

The Postage Stamp quilt is moving along – about 3/4ths of the last border now quilted.

The worst of the pollen is over I hope – that is for the trees, the grass pollen overlapped with the tree pollen last week making it twice as bad, but the thick yellow green pollen that sits on everything is about done – I hope!  I enjoyed time on the porch yesterday although I still need to spray everything off to clean off the pollen – it was too breezy yesterday and all the water would have sprayed back at me.  I have a lot of clearing up to do out here on the porch – all the bug and weed sprayers sitting out but I have a bit of work to do still in the yard with the weed killers.  The front porch stays in deep shade from this time of year until fall.

The front yard getting very green looking now that the leaves are on the trees.  I love all the hardwoods on the far side of the yard so leafed out at this time of year – it gives privacy from the dirt side road that runs down along side our property to the area in back of us that people live – not many but about 5 or 6 families back there.

The garden showing some green – I still have some flowers to plant and one package of sunflowers but over all what you see here is it – the sweet potatoes will go in someplace in June they like warmer ground.  The cement block garden I added last week, I spray painted the blocks green to blend in better and I hope when all the veggies and flowers get going it will help make it look prettier.  I still need mulch around the edges.

I tried to get a photo through the wire of the new little apples growing and all the photos were a bit blurry – well try for better when they get largers.

The tulips are about finished, still a few blooms but really falling apart now – I’m amazed at how long I was getting tulips and that they stayed pretty for at least a month.  I will clean this bed out soon and Canaan’s were planted in the middle, they will be pretty and tall in the center if they come up and mostly red I believe, maybe some yellows – only 5 or 6 and then the Crinums on the outer edge.  I don’t know how well they will do this year as I divided them last year and sometimes they don’t do really well for a year or so.  We will see – I might need to find some more tall things to plant in the middle as the Crinums’ get pretty tall and fall all over everything so what you plant in the middle behind them has to be tall.  This bed will be a work in progress this year after I cleaned so much out of it last fall.

Banana Chocolate Chip Walnut muffins were made late in the day – love these for breakfast.

Ten years of blogging! Congrats. I love your quilts, I find your hand quilting inspirational and I love that you work on a few projects at once:)

Congrats on 10 years blogging! Doesn’t time fly by?!? Have I known you that long? Seems like we were just doing Dear Jane, but now I remember that I started when I was living in the house before our previous house. And we’ve lived here since 2009. Amazing!

Your industriousness outside has me thinking about a little area behind our house that I need to dig up, improve the soil, and then plant. I’m thinking iris may go well because they don’t need super good soil or a lot of water. My daffodils have buds as do the lilacs – it’s so nice when spring finally arrives.

Congrats on 10 years of blogging and 10 years of beautiful quilts. I’m always inspired by how much you get done every day.

That deck is a killer.. would be hard for me to not sit and stay.. little would get done in the yard. A lovely property.. and no lack of yard chores… but probably less work now than when you acquired it and started to shape it into gardens. Gardens make good memories… I have found.

I’m jealous of your gardening skills! If I plant, it does not grow.

You started blogging just before I did. My blogiversary will be on July 4.

It is always tricky taking a photo through a screen or fence because that is where the camera wants to focus. It is hard to make it zero in on the object you want.

Happy 10 year anniversary Karen! Glad you are actively working on 3 projects and your yard too… I love seeing how green and colorful things are for you… we are brown and dying here… no rain… the rainy season for us starts in June if we don’t burn up before then! I am almost 1/4 done on my quilting project and haven’t yet started piecing yet… will be starting that soon I suppose 🙂 Those muffins look yummy too <3 Kathi

Congratulations Karen! Ten years goes by so fast doesn’t it? Your yard is simply beautiful, I love it. Your garden looks like it is really growing. I would be sitting on that beautiful porch eating a muffin and quilting all day! Thank you for all the pictures, I really enjoy them, and you inspire me with your lovely quilts.

I would love to hear more about that cement block garden. Are there things planted in the holes/centers of each block—or are things just planted in the center of the entire block garden? What’s the purpose of having it sit on cardboard rather than on the ground—weed control? I love to hear about people’s gardens!
