Playing with Hexies and Baskets

Fall Harvest (scrappy baskets), Handful of Scraps

Sunday was a bit of a lazy day.  I played with hexies and basted some more.  I have the table spread out so I can get back to working more on the borders – I still have two borders to attach to Handful of Scraps and then play with a design for the border.  One idea for the border I was playing with (there have been several ideas) is this one – a zigzag kind of line – maybe the one line like this or several put together? Not sure – just playing right now.

Also I was playing with the baskets from the book A Cold Wind Blows.  In the book the pattern is called Trick or Treat and it is made with mostly orange and brown type fabrics and there are a few nine patch blocks mixed in with the baskets and a few plain squares.  My intention right now is to just have baskets in the quilt and possible – an applique border.  But plans can change – nothing is written in stone for sure when it comes to my quilts.  The pattern says 300 – 5.5 inch blocks – I have cut mine 6 inches and I will want my quilt to be about 100 x 100 like usual.  If I have a border less blocks will be made.  Linking to Love, Laugh, Quilt and Em’s Scrapbag.

Right now these basket blocks are finished:

These baskets and squares got cut out on Sunday and are ready for applique.  I had planned on using a bundle of fat eight’s that I had set aside that I was using on Williamsburg Beauty and had a ton of pieces left over and the backgrounds are from a bundle called Butter Churn Basics plus some others that were on the shelves.  I will probably add more colors to the collection as these browns, blues, red and pinks are kind of on the dull side and I like things a bit more lively usually – we will see.

Linking to Quilty Folk: 365 today for her final link up on the circle quilt – my finish is on my December 1st post last year.

I was going to work on wool applique – the flower blocks I showed yesterday– but it turned out I don’t have enough bright colors in my wool box – lots of dull colors but not brights so I have ordered a little bit and will get to work on it after they arrive.  Today it is off to the Honda shop to get the airbags replaced for the recall.  Then grab lunch at the mall and look for some new shirts and hit Sam’s for some large quantity’s of things we go through before heading home.  Might look at a few more shops before Sam’s but most likely not – although in this particular area I know my way around and there are quite a few places I actually like (Melanie used to live in this area so I actually know my way around) – Target and Barnes & Noble to name a few – I will need to check before I leave if JoAnne’s is still over in this area or if that one had closed – I am just not that much of a shopper anymore.  I do no I want to be well on my way home before rush hour as I hate the Little Rock/North Little Rock traffic after 3!!

Should get around to some sewing in the evening.

You do stay busy.. quilts and stash plus car maintenance… gardening.. baking.. ..good thing it is leavened by books for down time. Wonderful to be retired and to have the say over how to use the hours and days of one’s life. Just finished .. for the third time .. a library book… “Francesca’s Kitchen”… Italian-American older woman nannying two grade school kids who reluctantly are tamed with her cooking. Maybe I already mentioned this book. Thanks for the daily postings.

It will be interesting what you will come up for the border. You always come up with the right and beautiful border. Lots of sewing coming up on the little baskets, love these little baskets. They are very addictIive once started on, lol! Hope the car gets done quickly so you can do your errands and get home before traffic starts.

  • I have a dear friend who lives in Casa and goes to Little Rock sometimes. Live near that area of Arkansas? Like the baskets have that book and worked on Editar’s hexagon quilt last year. Fun projects.

I like the zigzag kind of line, but I’m sure you’ll come up with other ideas too. Love the basket blocks, great way to use scraps. We need lazy days in between, I had one lazy day yesterday, felt great. 🙂

You were busy on your lazy day. Sometimes making scrap decisions and deciding on fabric colors can be an accomplishment towards the project. I have always admired this basket pattern especially with low volume neutral background fabric.
