Hexies and Machine Quilted

Granny’s Gone Crazy, scrap quilts

More hexies were made out on the porch yesterday – it was such a nice day!  Melanie come over for brunch yesterday and after eating was done and kitchen cleaned up we went out to the porch to stitch.

I got some more hexies basted and a couple more made.  When using these little plastic storage boxes – always make sure they are latched!!  Why you might ask?  I keep the papers in the bottom one and forgot to latch when I picked it up to bring in the house – a little gust of wind and tiny papers were all over the deck LOL – I did manage to get them all picked up before another gust of wind came up – luckily it actually waited a couple minutes before it did that!!  Should have gotten a photo.  While we were sitting on the porch out of the corner of my eye from where I was sitting I saw a fawn run across from near the garden into the woods and then right after that a second one – Melanie didn’t even have time to get up and look – she couldn’t see them from the direction she was sitting nor could Mike –  I’m sure the mother must have run first and I missed it – these were little and still had their spots.

In the evening I sat down at the machine and machine quilted the hot dish mat in about 20 minutes or less – of course it is not perfect but good enough for something for a hot dish to sit on.  I will try to do the binding today and will practice putting the binding on by machine for such a small task I’m sure I will make it more difficult than it needs to be LOL –but we will see I bet it will be just fine.  I didn’t draw any lines – just eyeballed so of course they are not perfectly straight.  Linking to MCM #77 Cooking Up Quilts , Em’s Scrapbag and Love, Laugh, Quilt .

The back – not one pucker on the back – I did have a couple tiny folds on the front but I don’t think they are too noticeable and maybe the binding will cover a couple of  them.  I did use the walking foot but it was thick so gathered up slightly in a couple places.

Your hexies are adorable! Love your dish mat as well. I have such a hard time not getting puckers and pleats on the back when I machine quilt on a domestic machine. I really need to practice that more.

I do not get them on the back usually but it is not uncommon to get little tucks on the front when crossing a section I already quilted when doing straight lines in both directions

We’ve been seeing quite a few deer along the roads this year, and lots have been small, just losing their spots. Guess the babies are just growing up so they are roaming a bit more than usual. Paul saw a bear cross the road recently, too. Not too usual in the middle of the day.

we never see bear in our area, but then just last week in a different area we did – black bear are in our area we just haven’t seen them

I could just picture hexie papers flying around like a snowstorm! 🙂

I was lucky they didn’t scatter far – I was thinking well I guess I better get the die cutter back out and cut more papers! at least that wouldn’t take more than a couple minutes!

What a lovely and fun day you had yesterday! How wonderful to see the fawns while stitching and enjoying your daughter. My daughter and grandson from Kentucky are coming to visit tomorrow for a week, so I’m getting their rooms ready. Your quilting came out so pretty on your dish mat. I can just see those papers flying all over, lol!

have fun with your visit Dottie – the fawns were a delight to see – hope they hadn’t been in the garden first!

I have to smile at the picture of all those little hexie papers flitting around. Glad you captured them before the next gust of wind. Your little sewn hexies are so cheerful and bright! I like the dish mat too. Sometimes it’s just fun to get something done, even if it’s not “perfect”.

some probably escaped to hid under the deck but I’m not going to go look LOL

Did you happen to see the tiny pattern today?

    • Karen Jun 26, 2017

yes I saw it was a very easy pattern today but I already had all of mine sewed together so I didn’t bother to make any more – the machine stitching is done, binding is on (not the best did it all by machine) and it is with the laundry to wash and dry tommorrow

You are my hero! Knowing when to all it “quits” on a quilt and finishing it off, instead of throwing it in the UFO basket. That takes a lot of self discipline in my opinion.

LOL – I hate UFO’s I do have a box of several blocks that I keep wondering what to do with and I think this might be the answer – make some mug rugs or little table toppers to put a vase on or something!

I am a total hexie addict and I love yours! What size are they? What will they be when they’re all grown up? So totally beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing at Love, Laugh Quilt!

these are only 1/2 inch hexies – I started making some just for fun to use up tiny pieces that where left over from cutting out other fabric and then crazily I got addicted LOL – I hope to have a table covering from them either just to fit part of the dining room table like a large mat or a complete table cloth over the sides – not really sure – just letting it grow for now

Oh! I forgot to mention that my daughter is glue basting her binding and such. She says it really helps. 🙂

others have said they use some glue to hold down their binding as well I might try that some time – but I can see that I really prefer to hand stitch the binding but thought I would try it now and then on small pieces.
