Fourth of July Weekend

Granny’s Got Style, knitting/crochet, quilts

I think this holiday weekend is a long one for a lot of people with the 4th being on a Tuesday.  Mike is off all week – with this contract job his hours are a little different this time then it normally is – last week he was working 4-12 this week he is off and the following week will be more normal  daytime hours once again.  If any of you in the states are traveling for the holiday week I hope you all have fun and stay save – the roads can be horrible at holiday time.   We are staying home and working on the house and will do hamburgers or something outside if the weather is nice – the heat will be in the forecast – for the first time since summer arrived we are to be in the low 90’s all week!!  Too hot, much prefer it to stay in the high 70’s or low 80’s and to jump right into the 90’s is too much for me.

Yesterday was a no sewing day for me – not usual but it happens now and then.  I thought seeing as I didn’t get any sewing done I would show the Patriotic table runner that I made last year. I was going to put it out at Memorial Day and I forgot so the 4th it will be and I will leave it out for the summer or part of it anyhow.

For Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy I will be working more on Granny’s Gone Crazy – a little more has been added to this since the last photo – and as you see I got my newest King Arthur sales catalog – I love this cooking company and order little do dads from the catalog for the kitchen and they always have a recipe or two in it that sound good.  I look at their on line page where they share a lot of recipes that are good. Also linking to Quilting is More Fun Than Housework .

I don’t know if any of you remember the yarn I bought in the winter time – I was going to try to crochet a bulky shrug type of sweater that really had an easy pattern to go with it – well it wasn’t working out LOL – the main problem is that the pattern didn’t really specify how small the woman was that made the pattern – she said it was a size small but we must be talking someone that is barely 5 feet tall with the arms the length of a child.  No way, no how was it going to fit me – I had started and I made my chain much longer than the pattern called for taking in to account how long my arms are – I am a little over 5’7” and my arm span is about that long as well.  This week was spent unraveling the whole thing and winding back  into balls and I’m going to start over again and make it my way!! maybe it will end up being an afghan instead of a shrug – LOL – either way this yarn will get used.  I will start working on it off and on and we will see how it goes and it if will be ready for winter.

Have a nice long weekend… although when we are retired, every day is a weekend. I have had the same thing happen to me with knitting patterns – sweaters turn into scarves and hats sometimes. Or I give the finished sweater away if it doesn’t fit.

    Your table runner looks great!

Have fun with all your projects. 🙂 Yes, my husband has a long weekend off and I’m so glad. I too plan to stitch and sew. (Can’t knit for the life of me) LOL!

I think a lot of us can’t knit although knitting seems to be more popular then crocheting it – crocheting is easier! I just need to watch my Craftsy class to learn some new stitches for it.

Wooden bowls .. good or bad… are beautiful… I have noticed your bread bowl many times… after seeing Crazy Mom Quilts wooden bowl full of her pin cushions, I searched & found one at an antiques mall.. The table runner is a beauty.

this one is not an antique they are sometimes so pricey – I actually found this one at Hobby Lobby LOL – but I loved it and got it.

Very nice patriotic table runner. I love that is is made with muted tones instead of the bright/bold red, white and blue. The pattern is great too.

Such a lovely table runner and the wooden bowl full of placemats just sets it off. A very nice table for part of the summer. My husband has been retired since 2004 and I really have a hard time keeping up with the days of the week, one long weekend it seems, lol! I think that crochet pattern would fit me, I’m five- five, but I’ve probably shrunk some. Sleeves are always too long. Hope you have a great long weekend too! Your crochet bag looks so inviting too, with that beautiful yarn in it !

thanks Dottie – Mike retired the first time 10 years ago early at 55 and didn’t work for about a year then started to do contract work for 6 months or so at a time taking a year to a year and a half off in between jobs, this hopefully is the last time now that he is 65 and this job will be about a year total – some of it has been part time and some weeks are full time –
I shrunk too LOL- I used to be 5’8″ now only 5’7″ 🙁 I like being tall now my granddaughter is taller and so is Melanie – still have one short daughter though!

I love your red, white, and blue table runner! The background pieces in different shades give it such a pretty, scrappy look – my favorite!

Your table runner looks so pretty – especially with the way you displayed your placemats! So very lovely!

I crocheted a granny square shrug that fit me – a “voluptuous” woman – as well as my size 2 daughter quite nicely! Here is the link: https://yarnutopia.com/2015/05/20/crochet-tutorial-granny-square-cardigan/. That yarn is absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing!

I agree that crochet is not difficult I taught my self before I had the Internet as I wanted to crochet a fancy edge around wash cloths for my granddaughter and embroider her name as my grandmother ?? had for me and my brothers.

I had tried knitting as a 8 year old but tension was a huge issue of course the cat ? did not mind it was a blanket for her with her kittens ?

I am trying to knit again and my tension is less of an issue but it’s the fingers and hands I need to keep at it to keep them working but not over do it’s a balance that I am not finding quite yet

I learned how to crochet years ago too, but just basic stitch and made small baby blankets and couch size – before I learn quilting and also did some before I became obsessed with only quilting.
