Back to the Hexies

Handful of Scraps, quilts

Now that Primary Colors top is done it was time to get back to Handful of Scraps – and there was just a tiny bit of quilting left to do on the Stain Glass Stars wall hanging and I finished that last night – soaked the blue quilting lines out and left it drying on the floor.  I will trim it down today and get binding cut.

First here is the wall hanging 15” x 33”

The ends will be squared up coming to just past the rope quilting.

For the quilting I used a King Tut variegated thread – I wasn’t sure if I would have enough as it was from a thread previously used on another quilt but I knew I could order it if I needed more – I didn’t plenty of thread was on it.  It has yellows, reds, oranges and greens in it.

On Handful of Scraps I have 3 neutral rows that I added to the top last month and now I have one row added to the bottom – two more to go and then I will add 3 rows to the sides.  At that point I will decide how many more rows of neutrals to make – right now I think 6 rows will be good but I will decide once the sides are on and see how I like it.  This quilt will take quite some time still.  I think this measures 48” x 60” when the last two rows are added.  Linking to My Quilt Infatuation today.

Handful of Scraps

Advance notice – a sale at Craftsy this weekend – they are calling it Maker’s Black Friday – get all your supplies & classes that you need to make Holiday Gifts – starts Friday the 18th through the 20th – advertised now on their site.  I will put reminders on the blog throughout the sale.  I have gotten some good prices on fabric in kits this way – might not like the pattern but if fabric is in that I will use and pay $5 or less a yard I will sure look at it!!

(I am compensated for any purchases made through my links.)

The colored quilting thread is an added good touch.. but whatever thread.. your hand quilting itself is the star of the show. I will be on the floor today laying out 12 1/2 ” blocks for a twin quilt to give to Interfaith Ministries here for the women’s shelter.. thinking of inserting small, almost hidden appliqued shapes of cats… birds.. fish.. that might intrigue a child. My interest in this project has been pretty steady and keen. Bought Warm and Natural batting yesterday … great discount at Joann’s.

the added applique sounds interesting – I’m sure it will look great. I knew of one lady that would add little bits of embroidery like an ant or a spider here and there

Your wall hanging quilting is so beautiful! You did a wonderful job on it with the stitches, the design and the pretty thread. You should be so proud of yourself! Your Handful of Scraps has inspired me to make it too. I have the book now and yesterday I started cutting the hexies out. Even with the hexie die, it’s quite a job of cutting. Two hand projects now, the little baskets and now the hexies, lol. Thank you for the heads up on the Craftsy sale this weekend, I’ll check it out.

I think the wall hanging has turned out really well – glad to have used those three pieces and not leave them in a box. I have an idea for the little basket quilt that doesn’t involve making 300 baskets I don’t even have a hundred of them and I am tired of them – I am possibly going to be making four patch neutral blocks to go in between the baskets and have the quilt smaller than queen size – the size I normally make

Your wall hanging is looking great! I just noticed that there are stars formed in the center piece where the dark and light pieces come together around the outside edge. The quilting is lovely, and I really like the variegated thread, too!
