Stain Glass Stars

Primary Colors, quilts

Although I have found I hate hand quilting in a hoop for a big quilt I don’t mind doing a small piece in a hoop so I thought I would take a little break from the hexies and work on the Stain Glass Stars.

First I needed to get a stencil design drawn on the piece and after I squared the piece up I realized I had the measurements exactly right for a design with no modification to it – meaning stretching a couple lines out here and there to make it fit right – I think this has got to have been a first for me – I always have to stretch a design out to fit the piece right.  I had originally thought to put a feather design around the edges but I didn’t have any the right size but I did have this rope design.

It is hard to get the drawn lines to show up sometimes – but I think you can see it ok – this is before I got all the lines on it.

The tools I use – first get a diagonal line started then use the straight ruler to do one inch lines, then change direction and get the grid in place.

With this being a small piece I was able to get it thread basted last night and quilting was started  – I’m using a variegated thread.  Linking to My Quilt Infatuation,  Sew Fresh Quilts , Jo’s Country Junction and Midweek Makers #84.

Also I thought I better take the time to get a couple more blocks done for Primary Colors to make sure I was making progress on that – these blocks go so quickly.  With just these six blocks the quilt will be about 47 x 71 inches – I will make another set of 3 blocks and have it 3 x 3 and then see what I have left to finish it up.

The weather is unbelievable  for August – been about 80-82 since the beginning of the month – August is usually hitting 92 at least if not higher – and wet – more rain the forecast by the weekend – no drought this summer!  I pulled out the cucumbers and the yellow squash as they just weren’t doing well but the tomatoes are still producing and another sauce will be made today in the crockpot to use them up.

I have missed hand quilting but couldn’t stand the thought of trying to do a large quilt in a hoop – just too much sitting on top of me and I wasn’t comfortable doing it anywhere but the couch – this will satisfy me – hopefully the sewing room will be done by fall but it seems like there is constantly one delay after another – sometimes only one piece of wood added in a whole week. it was 67 this morning when I got up – unreal for August and I was sitting outside yesterday afternoon around 4 and not sweating!

I love how you plan to quilt the runner. You have such a talent for choosing quilting patterns to fit the space and design of your quilt. I’m glad you’re back to quilting. I’ve missed seeing your beautiful stitches.

thanks Barbara – I have missed stitching but just can’t accustom myself to quilting a big quilt in a hoop – this little project needs to be done and will satisfy me until I get the big quilting frame put back together again – I do hope for the end of September but something constantly seems to be interfering with Mike’s time.

Your quilting looks beautiful and makes your wall hanging shine even more. It’s hard waiting for your sewing room to be done, but you seem to be accomplishing quite a lot anyway! You’ll be in your sewing room soon.

I hope to be back in the room by fall, but then of course I had hoped to be using it by now – something keeps preventing work from being done, between work and aches and pains it has been going slowly

Your markings make it look so easy for the hand quilting. It almost make me want to so it as well. But I really love your large blocks of primary colors. I like doing donation quilts and this one would go fast.

yes I have to do the markings to do a hand stitch design or I have very uneven lines. The bright color quilt is going very fast – I will machine quilt with straight lines making it easy to finish but yet be pretty

I am just loving the summer weather here this year – only a couple weeks was it really too hot and humid and of course that was partly the week our daughter and grandkids from Wisconsin were visiting us — I don’t think this wall hanging will take real long to quilt – I don’t remember the measurements off hand but I think it was 16 x 34?

Love seeing how Primary Colors is coming along, Karen…. I am always amazed at how such simple shapes can result in amazing quilts.
I really like your quilting plan for the wall hanging. It will complement the intricate EPP piecing… Looking forward to following along on the quilting journey of this piece…
We have had a nice break in the hot weather here in Virginia…. We have had a little rain, but could use some more… I know we are not done with the heat and humidity, but it is nice to have the break…

thanks Sandra. The quilt – both are going pretty well and it is nice to get back to a little hand quilting. A little warmer here yesterday and today but then only to be around 80 if it even gets there – such a nice break this summer has been

It’s a long time since I did any hand quilting, I never managed to get the proper rocking motion. You are inspiring me to maybe revisit a UFO.

I have missed my hand quilting and will love to get my big frame back up so I can work on my big quilts – I find them too big to do in a hoop
