Bias Vines & Hexies

Clover Bias Stem Maker, Fall Harvest (scrappy baskets), Handful of Scraps

Yesterday morning I got busy cutting my bias pieces for my vines.  I found my Clover bias stem maker only to find I didn’t have any of the iron on fusible that you can use with it – it will iron the vines right down where you want them and most times hold it in place pretty good while you are sewing – sometimes you need to add a little bit of fabric glue to hold it in place.  I will check Hobby Lobby today and see if they have it – I’m not sure if I ever saw it at Wal-Mart but if they don’t have it I will run in Wal-Mart to check.

I’m using the 3/8” inch bias maker for the vines so cut the strips 3/4” wide.

I use a large cutting mat that I have that is ancient and has some grooves cut into it from years of use but they have good lines to follow for lining your fabric up to cut bias strips.  I have a link on the side bar under tutorials on the Clover Bias Stem Maker if you are unfamiliar with.

Here I am holding the fabric up so you can see all the lines you have to chose from.

When I got done with that I got the accuquilt die out for the hexies and got more neutral hexies cut out and put in the box – I was down to mainly the blue/white strip and a couple others – had to get more ready and will thread baste for a couple days to get the box full.

This is what Handful of Scraps looks like now with the partial side done.

Close up of that area – you can see I was having to use a lot of the blue/white strips – I needed more pieces!  Linking to Em’s Scrapbag today and Design Wall Monday at Small Quilts and Doll Quilts and MCM#87 Cooking Up Quilts .

September 4th only – Craftsy is offering all of their 1,200+ classes for free.  That is right you can sign up with your email address and join them for a one day free access to all on line classes.  I’m not sure how it will work but if you go to the link above or in the picture below it will take you to the Craftsy site and you will find out all the information.  There are a few classes that I have been looking at and I guess this is a good time to do a bit of look over and see if I like them enough to buy them so I can watch as much as I want if I can’t learn it all in one day!!

I love the layout of your hexie quilt. It looks like you are getting close to finishing it. Now it’s time to get over and check out the free Craftsy videos. Have a great day! Andrea

long way from finishing this – believe it or not this quilt barely measures 50 x 60 inches right now – I do not know if it will be queen size but I want it big enough to use it and it is baby size right now 🙂

the strip fabric is what I was going to use for a background to applique the quilt center to – but then I decided to continue on with hexies instead – so i have a lot of the blue white strip fabric to use scattered throughout instead

Thank you for the Craftsy link, I’ll check it out. Our son just left for Florida a little while ago. He stopped here yesterday on his way home from Houston. It was such a wonderful surprise. Now I’m free to check out Crafsty. You’re still progressing on your beautiful projects.

nice that you had a surprise visit from your son. I haven’t had time to check out Craftsy myself yet LOL – been busy with other things.

Thanks for sharing that great cutting mat and how you cut your bias strips… nice that you had that big piece of dark fabric for your vines too! I hope to read that you found the bonding stuff you were looking for… can’t wait to see that and how it works 🙂
I watched 2 or 3 shows yesterday thanks to you and others sharing about the free day! Has Craftsy ever done this before?? I loved Jaquie ?? Gerings class the most and can’t wait to try some new stuff I learned on the heart pillow waiting to be machine quilted!!! I plan to order another class this week that I didn’t get to watch and will order through your link 🙂

thanks Kathi – I have 2 of Jacquie’s classes too – straight line quilting is about all I like in machine quilting. I didn’t find the fusible strips for the Clover bias maker so order some. I don’t think Craftsy has had a preview day of classes before – something new I think
