3 Different Projects

Fall Harvest (scrappy baskets), Murrieta Stars – Flannel, Round We Go

I didn’t do any quilting last night – my sewing room has that faint smell of varnish in the air and it was giving me a headache and besides which I really need to work on my applique now and then so have to take a break from Murrieta Stars. I did get some quilting done though on Saturday night before the varnish smell got to me then too – thankfully today it will be warmer and I will be able to open the window, turn the fan on to exhaust it out of the room in the afternoon and try to get it all done in the next couple days while the afternoons are to be warmer.  It really is the only place to get this done at or the smell will be throughout the whole house.  It is small though so I get done varnishing quickly and leave the room – the smell dissipates by late in the day but sometimes my sinuses will continue to smell things like this for awhile – glad I can open the window even if only for an hour or so.  (when I was working on the whole room it was warmer and I could leave the window with a fan pointing out all day to air it out and didn’t smell it like yesterday)

This is without the flash so I don’t have the shadow from the light bar above – not the true color.

Murrieta Stars

Fall Harvest – 2nd border – half way done – I hope I got a couple more appliqued while watching tv last night.

Fall Harvest

Round We Go – Patterns 1 and 2 done – but the two with the arrows – one from each grouping I am not happy with – I will leave it for now – on the top row at the right – the center seems too dark and the points too light.  On the bottom on the left – the greenish/blue not my usual colors or design choice of fabric – not sure if I am happy with it.  Also all the rest of them have red in them someplace and that one doesn’t so do I stick with a little bit of red in all of them and redo that one or not? Not sure at this point.

Round We Go #1 & 2

Has anyone used Elmer’s Glue Sticks for their English Paper Piecing for basting?  I don’t mind glue basting this project with glue but I’ve been going through most of my spare glue sticks that I have had on hand – and you know those little things are pricey!  – any other options.  I have never used it a lot so ordering some now and then to keep on hand was ok, but when using it a lot it gets pricey like I say – what do you use?  I have a Fons and Porter Glue Stick Pen and I have used both that refill and the Sew Line refill in it.  I am linking to Em’s Scrapbag today and Cooking Up Quilts , Love Laugh Quilt , Small Quilts and Doll Quilts.

I have use elmers glue before for applique basting. I generally do the iron / freezer paper / starch method but I’ve used the glue sticks / they are fine.

this would be for the EPP the glue would be on the papers and pressing the fabric to it with your fingers. I might pick one up today to try – I just need it to wash out of the fabric and not stick so hard to the papers that it wouldn’t come back off

I see what you mean about the two stars you have arrows on. The one on the bottom is pretty by itself, but really sticks out and doesn’t look like it belongs. The other one does look like it has two dark centers, a little bit dark. I like the Lapel Stick, but maybe I’ll try Elmers if it’s cheaper. I’ve already used two so far on my 170 scrappy baskets. I have two big bins of fabric to go through today, my sister gave them to me and have to repot some of my plants before bringing them in. Beautiful sunny day here in the DFW area, but rain is coming tomorrow and only 56 for Halloween. Your quilting is so pretty!

I have never tried the Elmer’s Stick so don’t get on my say so – I’m wondering if anyone has tried it on fabric. I haven’t heard of the Lapel Stick – I have one plant to pot this week but it is already in the house so no rush

thanks Dottie I might check them out – i think I have some points built up to use too

The top/right appears to be a different piecing, due to the use of the really dark center colors—interesting. The bottom one would be a keeper for me. There seems to be a hint of blush/pink in the tiny flower(?) piece that would help it blend with the others (even w/o that, I really like the greens you chose).
Totally understand the headaches from varnish vapors/smells. Almost like a migraine (for me…ugh!)………….. Beautiful quilting…as always………..

it is surprising isn’t it the difference in the way the pattern looks with the use of different colors in different places – yes the bottom “green” star has a little bit of pink/red in the print

thanks!! I will wait until I am almost done with all the circles needed and then decide if I will change any of them – I will be working on these circles for a year!

  • Elzaan Oct 31, 2017

I will keep the green and blue one aside to see if it will fit in the quilt later, just for “in case”. But it is pretty as it is. The other one…I agree that the points are too light.

Yes those two just draw my eye because they are different – I will save any I don’t care for as much until the end and then decide what to do with them

I use Elmer’s School Glue. Don’t need much and it works great.
