Fall Harvest is Done!

Fall Harvest (scrappy baskets), Murrieta Stars – Flannel

Finally the last stitch is taken on the leaves of the Fall Harvest border.  I am glad to be done with this top and glad I didn’t go queen size.  It has been mentioned that most of you do not do applique to a border after it is already sewn to a top but I didn’t decide to add applique until after I had the plain borders added to it – it really isn’t that hard to do and that way you can free style the corners.  I actually do this frequently as some times a quilt doesn’t call to me to have an applique border until after I add the border!  I took everything off of the design wall so I could hang it up and not have to lay it on the floor and move furniture out of the way so it could be flat.  It finishes at about 82 1/2 inch square.

Fall Harvest

I use my quilting frame as a hanger of sorts for quilts and when the design wall needs to be used for something big it all gets laid on the frame – handy

On Murrieta Stars from Friday night – and more work will be done on this for Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy and I’m also linking to Quilting is More Fun Than Housework

Someone wanted to see the stencil again for the plain blocks

Fall Harvest is lovely! I always like applique on top of neutral piecing, and that border really finishes the quilt off nicely.

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

thank you Marianne – I’m glad to be done with this one so I can see if I can finish one of these others that I had started – I have too many going.

  • Deb Nov 12, 2017

Wow that seems quick ( to me but I wasn’t appliqueing it 🙂 It looks gorgeous!

it did go rather quickly actually, I just checked the archives and I started to stitch the vine down on September 10 so it took two months to do the applique – the leaves went fairly easy though, when I cut the leaves out I purposely rounded a lot of the points so they would be easier to do

Lots of hand stitching going on in your corner of the world! The border looks great on the baskets quilt and I’m drooling all over your hand quilting project. It’s probably a good thing that I am not there in person!

LOL – thanks for not drooling in person 🙂 yes there is always too much hand work going on and I keep saying I have to start to use the machine more and then I will start another hand project

Your quilt room looks so nice now that all is completed. Congrats on the top finish. It’s beautiful as are all your tops/quilts.

thanks Liz – I love the room the way it is now, still not satisfied with the lights by the quilting frame and wish it had not been track lighting but there wasn’t much else to do with it. I’m glad to have one more top done even if that means one more in the basket to quilt

That is so pretty, Karen! I think the applique adds so much to the quilt – such a good idea!

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

thanks Diann – yes as soon as I added the border I knew I had to have something more on it – the quilt didn’t look finished!

  • Jayne Nov 12, 2017

That looks so good! Regardless how you do your applique borders…it works for you and it looks great! Thanks for sharing the stencil…that is so interesting!

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

  • Dottie bishaw Nov 12, 2017

Congratulations Karen on such a lovely finish! I just love the border on Fall Harvest and will keep it in mind when I finish my little baskets. It really does finish the quilt beautifully! It’s just so pretty I can’t stop enjoying the picture. The quilting stencil is so right for Murrieta Stars too. Have a great Sunday!

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

  • Carla Therrien Nov 12, 2017

Oh I love seeing your quilting stitches on the Murietta Star quilt! I am excited that my next two tops that I will hand quilt will basically be outline quilting. Happy Stitching!

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

thanks Carla – yes this quilt is mainly simple big stitch – it really goes so much faster than tiny stitches and suits this quilt

  • Thimbleanna Nov 12, 2017

I love all seeing all these projects in progress in your new room — so bright and pretty!

Thanks Anna – it would be nice to get caught up on the tops – but that will never happen!

  • Quilter Kathy Nov 12, 2017

So fun to see the update on your hand quilting project on the big frame!
I am always reassured that other quilters can hear/listen to the demands of a quilt and obey!

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

🙂 yes sometimes the quilt just talks to you doesn’t it –

  • Kathi Nov 12, 2017

Such a lovely flimsy to call ready to quilt Karen!

I also LOVE the flower center with surrounding crosshatch you are using for your diamonds!

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

Get to work girl! 🙂 glad everyone seems to like it I know I was pleased with the finish

  • Sandra B Nov 12, 2017

Karen, this finish is beautiful! The appliqué border is perfect…I know I have said this before but you always have such great borders on your quilts…looking forward to following along on the quilting, whenever this one comes up!
Love the stencil you are using for the center of the plain squares on Murrieta Stars! I was looking for something in the cabinet in my sewing room this afternoon and found a dozen or so stencils I had forgotten I had… Over the years, they have accumulated!!
We have had a cold couple of days here in Virginia…in the 20’s a couple of nights… I think it will be a bit warmer this week, but still much cooler than we’ve had recently. Good weather for hand quilting with a cup of hot tea by my side…

    • Karen Nov 12, 2017

sounds like me I had completely lost track of 4 stencils and found them when I was getting this quilt ready and they had never been used – they are now with the rest of them. My sister said it had been pretty cold out there recently – we have not had a frost here still where we live but in the valley they did – now it doesn’t look like a freeze for awhile the outlook has it above that for awhile now.

  • deb Nov 13, 2017

I seem to be held up on an appliqué border… I think I might do as you did and add my border and then add the appliqué. It might help me decide on what I want to do. Thanks for helping me think outside of the box. Love the basket quilt…. I hope to start hand quilting mine next month.

Congratulations on your beautiful finished Fall Harvest quilt! You finished right on schedule, at least by the calendar’s reckoning. I always seem to be working on fall projects in the spring, backwards!
