Quilting Away

Handful of Scraps, Murrieta Stars – Flannel

Little by little this quilt is getting done and give me about two more nights and it will be done!    This much of the last border was done on Wednesday night –  hard to show more when it is all rolled up!

I have complained of my lights for a long time and Mike found this track of lights that sticks on to the surface – LED lights and I will give them a try for awhile and see how they work.  This string of lights which has an adhesive backing was found at Lowe’s it is 8 feet long and just about centered on the bar that holds my notion holder which still fits in place – just need to gently lift as I move it.  It has a dimmer switch on it.  It was about $37

Another quilt that got worked on yesterday was the Handful of Scraps.  The backing took several pieces sewed together and then I went through the batting scraps – it ended up taking 3 long narrow pieces and then two narrow pieces fitted together to finish it off.  I thought the pieces were larger than they were so had to put more together than I thought I would need to.  Linking to Confessions of a Fabric AddictCrazy Mom Quilts — Busy Hands Quilts

I use a soft fusible tape that you iron on – those areas you notice just a slight difference when you are hand quilting but I have never had a problem with them sticking or quilting through.  When I roll it on the frame I do not pull quite as tight as I would if it was all in one piece.  Now it is all ready to be put on the frame as soon as Murrieta Stars comes off of it.

The pretty backing is from Primitive Gatherings and this one is called “Lakeside Gatherings” Before I started this quilt I won a fat eighth bundle of this fabric design from something I really don’t remember what now and I used a lot of it in this quilt and some others and then when I needed more neutrals I went in looking for some more and found plenty at that time.

I love that batting tape – use it all the time. The little string quilt I just finished is like a patchwork quilt inside, but you can’t tell when you feel the quilt. It’s so flexible.

I’m glad they started to make this tape I find it much easier and faster to do then zigzag it together. Yes even though I put four or was it five pieces together I will not know where it was once the quilt is fimished.

Where do you find that tape for the batting pieces? It looks really useful – I have tons of those smaller pieces of batting that could be used up! Sometimes I zigzag them together, but that seems to stretch the batting. Both quilts are looking great!

I have gotten the tape at a lot of different places – it goes by a variety of names too. you can put in “fuse tape for quilt batting” in a google search and anything from Connecting Threads to Joannes, to Missouri Star comes up and at all different prices! I got this one that I used from whatever company I ordered from last and tacked it on to the end of the order when I remembered I was almost out of it!

The tape certainly is handy, isn’t it? Someone really had a great idea to come up with it. Your lighting looks like it’s going to work really well too. Do you like it better than the other overhead lights? I like the backing you chose too, I love the Lakeside Gatherings line, I have a fat quarter bundle of it that I use for my hexie quilt too. The backing is just perfect for this quilt. How exciting to think only two more nights and Murrieta Stars will be done!

I like that the strip of LED lights has a dimmer switch on it and all of my over head lights also have dimmer switches that way I can dim the ones that need it and I think it will work out ok – I have had a bit of problem with light sensitivity since I had the eye surgery two years ago and the problems that came afterwards with it so it is good to have those dimmer switches. I did not want to give up the bar above the quilt with the notion holder I really like it so I was glad that I could still use it.

Karen, you are so close to finishing Murrieta Stars! This one went really fast! Cannot wait to see it all done!!
Looking forward to seeing Handful of Scraps go on the quilting frame…. I know you said you would use simple quilting on it, but I know it will look great, whatever you decide….you always seem to know the perfect design to use!
We have had a warm day today…70 degrees I think they said….but that is short lived…tomorrow we are back in the 30’s, and prediction for snow on Wednesday…UGH!! I keep telling myself that every day that passes gets us one day closer to spring!

I keep telling myself to quite complaining about winter but we are in a week of cold weather and back to arctic nights again I think Sunday and Monday down to 10!! hate that.
Just finished Murrieta Stars and spritzed the last blue lines out and well take it off the frame in the morning and get the Hexie quilt on the frame! Glad to get done with the flannel and the bigger needle I was using.
Seems weird you guys are having such cold weather the last couple winters too

I’m anxious to see how you are going to quilt that one. I just love it. That light looks really nice too.

I’m not quite sure yet how I’m going to quilt it – I have it on the frame now and will be looking at it off and on over the next few days – something well come to me – no stencils on this one for sure –
