More Birds and Applique

Bird Brain, Handful of Scraps, Morning Glory

Saturday more birds were added to Bird Brain on the wall and I put them in longer rows to see what I needed to do still – and then of course I got side tracked and didn’t figure it out!  Now they are in 5 longer rows – right now without the blocks sewn together this will be about 40 x 53 the blocks with the branch on the bottom are about 7.25 x 8.5 the tree trunk (long sashing) running down the length will be the same as the branches these are 2 inches so would be 1.5 finished – so I have more to do for sure!  A week ago I had 14 birds now there are 30 – I’m pleased with the progress I made this week on these birds.  Each bird block only takes about 15 minutes if I settle in not get distracted and get down to work – they should be done by now!!  Linking my birds to Quilting is More Fun Than Housework.

But I think I will take a day away from the Birds and for my Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy I will get my applique ready for Morning Glory – I’m getting tired of putting it aside and need a day away from the sewing machine – I think it will be all hand work today.  So today I will iron the freezer paper onto the fabric, trace around with pencil or chalk pencil, cut and glue baste.  Then I will have a project in the living room to work on (I get tired of mini hexies quickly) when I want to for the next month or so as I know it will take that long in between all the other hand projects.

I forgot to take a photo of the quilting that I did on Saturday night and rolled the quilt down – this is where I started last night and will continue on today – Handful of Scraps is half way done!! – 3 weeks of quilting 28 hours.

Hope you all enjoy your Sunday and if you are doing slow stitching link to Kathy – the link is above and on my sidebar Kathy’s Quilts (well as soon as I get up that is), we always love to see more quilters taking their time with hand work.

(I am compensated for any purchases made through my links.)

Hey Karen… I love the post you made earlier showing your new holder for your iPad… I want one if there is a space for it when we get moved and settled. Had an offer but it is still preliminary.. so haven’t been on blogland much lately as the “wait and see” has been eating my and my honey’s time! lol
I love your birds, and your slow stitching progress… your hexi project posed on the table looks fun too… and I can’t forget your applique too! How about the ideas for your upcoming triangle strippy quilt!!! Love them all <3 Thanks for finding and sharing that iPad holder though.. I hate how my honey's iPad sits on my quilt and makes it loose over time! Have a blessed Sunday! Kathi

hope the offer on the house goes through! the IPad holder is working out great on the wall, some glare still from lights but not near as much of a problem as it had been.

Nice to have a variety of projects to work on all prepped and ready to go! Your birds are lovely and the hexagon quilt is moving along nicely. I think I’ll try a little hand quilting today and see how the cats and kittens behave – the kids are here today to entertain them so I should be ok!

you might have to shut the pets out of the room so you can get your quilting done! Hope you have time to stitch

The fabrics that you are using for your applique are so pretty. I love the rich colors. Those birds are so much fun to look at.

thanks! a lot of the birds are made from 5inch charms of Boundless Batik from Craftsy – I wanted to try the fabric out as it was new and I really like it – it is not as stiff as other batik’s but has a softer feel to it.

I like the way you have the birds laid out, alternating their placement so they aren’t right next to each other in a row! Your Morning Glory applique looks like it will be a very slow-stitching project – lots of pieces – but an enjoyable long term project! Happy stitching today, Karen!

yes Morning Glory will be slow work most of the time, sometimes I just sit for hours with applique and have little to show for it as progress is slow sometimes – I will be working on this quilt for over a year I’m sure, quite likely 2. I’m glad I thought to space the birds like this too – I know I saw one like this someplace but haven’t gotten back on pinterest to look and it was most likely there I saw one

Oh your birds have multiplied this week. Just love them! Looking forward to the progress on your applique project. Not sure I could ever start a big applique project again they are very intense.

    • Karen Feb 4, 2018

they sure are intense I have 3 big ones now – one queen size (the red/green) and a Christmas one that is about 88 inches square, the Floral Fantasy black with bright colors about 80 inches? and now this one – much different coloring in this one each one took me several years to make

Your flock is certainly growing, so pretty. I love watching you make Morning Glory, I haven’t started mine yet, soon though. Love your quilting on Handfuls of Scraps. Enjoy your slow stitching today, a beautiful Sunday here.

    • Karen Feb 4, 2018

yes the flock is growing – I think I have about 10 more cut so will probably need to cut more out

  • Angela Feldbush Feb 4, 2018

The applique blocks will make a nice change from your hexies. After the prep work it should be nice and easy to finish the stitching.

yes it usually goes fairly smoothly after the prep work is finished

  • Kristie Feb 4, 2018

Your birds are so cute! They are coming along nicely. It will not be long and you will have that hexie quilt finished and off the frame!

yes it should be off the frame in 3 to 4 weeks I think. The birds are multiplying pretty well

  • Cynthia Brunz Feb 4, 2018
