Granddaughter Piecing & Swim Practice

by Karen on May 15, 2011

in family

My 8 year old  granddaughter Ciera decided that karate was not for her and recently quit that activity.  Now she is learning how to swim and is going to be playing softball.  She is looking for what activity is right for her.  I got to go with her yesterday to see her in the pool.  Later when we got back home she decided to get her box of quilting blocks out that I sent her for Christmas to have me help her.  She is really doing great on it but doesn’t have the interest to stick with it for long.

So once again these photos are mainly for family to see but feel free to stick around if you want.

At the pool ready to jump in.

Enjoying herself:

029

She had 3 of these rows sewed together since Christmas! Plus she had 3 more rows of blocks sewed in strips.

044

Busy with the needle.  I had just sent her fairly good size needles to work with as I thought  small needles would be too small for her to handle but after seeing the trouble she was having with the large needle I had her try a smaller one and it worked much easier for her – the larger needle was harder to work through the fabric.

046

She now has 5 rows sewed together.  Next she will put a 2 1/2 strip around the edges and then it will be ready for quilting.  It will be a small doll quilt.  I think we will try to work on it tomorrow – the kids are being given Monday off of school to visit with me for the last day so we will be out running around and I hope to make time to help her with the quilt too.

047

Ok – enough sewing now it’s time for a snack!

049

Jessica, Ciera and I went to Millhouse Quilts on our way home so I got to do some shopping, I will post photos of what I got later.  Maybe while I am waiting for flights on Tuesday.  Jessica will be dropping me off at the airport on Tuesday here in Madison on her way to work so I will have a 2 1/2 hour visit to the Madison airport and then I fly to Chicago where I believe I have a 3 hour wait.  Plenty of time to get on the computer I bet.  I love how the airports have tables here and there next to electric outlets so you can plug in and get your daily fix without running down your batteries too much!  Tomorrow I will post photos from Utah’s belt black ceremony.  As you can all believe I am not spending near as much time on the computer as I do when I am at home Smile

Karate photos

by Karen on May 14, 2011

in family

This post is just karate photos to share with family that read the blog – if you want to stay and look feel free Smile

Yes this is a quilting blog, but I’m busy with the grandchildren and family this weekend.  Last night was my grandson’s last Karate testing for his black belt before graduation on Sunday and getting the belt in a ceremony.  It was expected all that were doing their final test last night would fly through and they did.

These are the kids in testing for the last step before receiving their belts – as you can see a wide range of ages – some have been doing karate since they were 3 years old in kinder-kicker class.  My grandson will be 11 next month and has been in the karate school for a little over 4 years (since they moved here to WI) he is 5th in the first row here.

068

It is so hard to get action photos with my camera as I don’t practice with action photos – far cry from quilts!  Here he is doing some kicks – he is the first one closest to the camera with the very short hair!

079

Self-defense – the girl is bigger than him and a higher belt level – they helped out last night with the testing.

084

Getting ready to get her to the floor -

091

And he did it! down to the floor she went.

090

After testing is done all go through the line of instructors to receive a certificate and congratulations from the teachers.  This one he is receiving a hug from is the oldest black belt in the area.

The owner of this school – very proud of him.

The class from his school (3 area schools tested together) my grandson is in the front there being the class clown

Jessica with her kids

149

These kids are on the Team Eclipse team with him, they go around doing demonstrations and tournaments.  Looks like they were proud of him too.

160

With one of his pals – she is a black belt first level and was testing for her second level of black belt – red uniform, now will go to white pants – Utah will be a first level black belt now and his uniform will go to the red color now.  The color of uniform determines the level they are at and testing was being done for numerous levels last night.

163

Utah we are all very proud of you!!  Good job.

At the Nature Trail

by Karen on April 9, 2011

in family

Russellville Arkansas has a nice nature trail called Bona Dea.  There are criss-crossing trails, the longest is about 3 1/2 miles.  It has two entrances one by the front parking lot and one in the back that isn’t used as much.  This is the area that the swampy area is located at and sometimes you can spot an alligator like my daughter Melanie and I did 3 years ago – seen here. I really haven’t a clue what we would ever do if we actually spotted the alligator and it wasn’t in the water but on the trail!! I had never heard of that happening though and I think it (or they) spend all their time in the water.

Yesterday I picked up my 12 year niece Lily after school and we spent the rest of the day together as her mom had to fly to Chicago and  my brother (her dad) and her brother had out of town activities with the high school band.

First we went to the Bona Dea Trails to the swamp area that she had not been at.  On the way to the swamp there area walls of rock cliff area that you walk to first.  We climbed the stairs to the cliff area that don’t quite make caves but almost – here she is in the “cave”

006

At the above photo looking down you see the swamp by the trail.

010

Looking back you can see the stair and railing – it really isn’t very far or high off of the trail.

012

She wants to get into the rocks a bit more – but nope – Aunt Karen doesn’t do that kind of rocks! not in good shape for it and also no rock climbing here allowed.

011

Back to the trail we go – this is a side shoot off trail called “Beaver Dam” a little walk through the woods avoiding the poison ivy and keeping watch for snakes.

013

Back to the main trail now and almost back to the parking lot – we had gotten busy talking and weren’t watching where we were walking quite so much and almost stepped on a copperhead snake (poison) that really looked like a fat brown branch – had to do a little hop, skip to get around that quickly – will teach you to watch where you are going a little better!

015

See the markings – this one is darker than most I have seen – more brown than copper – used the zoom lens on the camera – we watched it for awhile but it appeared to be scared of us and wasn’t going to move much until we left.  EDITED 4/10/2011:  I have been told by several people that this might be a cottonmouth snake instead of a copperhead.  I am not a snake expert and have only seen cottonmouths in the water where they appear to be black which very well could be the water making them look black – either way it is poisonous so I am glad we got out of the way fast. I know it looked different in color and fatter – I just assumed as it aged it might look different.

017

Back to the parking lot we went.  Mike met us for pizza and then home .  Raiders of the Lost Ark with Harrison Ford (back from 1981!) was on tv – yes an old movie now and we had all seen it but we watched it anyhow — laughed at the places in the movie where he mentions hating snakes!!  A late night as my brother didn’t get to the house until 11 – they had a busy weekend planned with more school trips – Mike and I on the other hand are taking it easy – he is doing taxes and I am planting plants and relaxing!

Hope you all have a good weekend – we are having a heat wave it seems – 85 yesterday and 90 today they say – too hot too fast – where did the 70’s go that is normal for this time of year?

Well I told you all about two weeks ago that my 8 year old granddaughter called me up to ask for scraps as she wanted to make a doll quilt.  I quickly got supplies ready for her and picked out a box to put it all in and sent it off.  I got pictures last night from my daughter’s cell phone of what they are doing Smile It has been snowing like crazy up in Wisconsin so last night they were making a quilt.  It sure would be nice to be up there visiting and seeing this quilting going on in person but these pictures are the next best thing (and I don’t have to put up with the snow – the cold weather and wind we are getting today is enough for me and tomorrow will be even colder from what we hear)

Ciera deciding on a design.

Two pieces pinned together and some quarter inch tape to mark the seam:

IMG00026-20101211-1856

Figuring out how to stitch – mommy (my daughter Jessica) remembers how to do this and is teaching her (Jessica just doesn’t have the patience!).  Ciera has also gotten plenty of lessons from my visits but we only see them about 2 times a year on average so the last lesson was some time back.

IMG00037-20101211-1859

Look at this Grandma!  Two blocks stitched together – don’t you just love this smile Smile

IMG00041-20101211-1908

Now big brother Utah has gotten lessons over time also and he has decided to help:

IMG00042-20101211-2004

Don’t you just love seeing kids picking up fabric, needle and thread being creative!

IMG00046-20101211-2006

(the postage size blocks were leftover from a project I started – I sent those blocks along for them to use)

I got another triangle done last night – only 2 yesterday – that leaves one to make today and the triangles will be finished!!  I will get busy putting that row of triangles for the final 4th border today and then get busy on the four corner pieces.

Jessica is the daughter that will eventually be getting this version of Dear Jane “Insanity Revisited” as my older daughter Melanie has the first Dear Jane “Insanity”.  The grandkids know this quilt is coming to their house eventually and are looking forward to “getting another quilt”.

I do have one more block prepped and ready to go but today was taken up with other things.  Blueberry picking first thing this morning.  I met CJ at 7 and we headed out to my brother’s farm.  We had a great day for berry picking.  Neither of us had “fixed” ourselves up we assumed we would be hot and sweaty with hats and bug spray.  We were pleasantly surprised when the weather stayed at a comfortable 70 (?) and very cloudy.  Here are photos of the farm – caught CJ in a couple ( but not close ups – not when we aren’t fixed up :) )

part of the blueberry farm, that is CJ walking up to the shed

another part of the farm - those are rows of blueberries. I should have taken a close up of the berries but didn't think to do so - lots of ripe ones out there.

and more blueberries - I have no idea how many rows and plants he has - I will need to ask him sometime. Doesn't he have a pretty view

My brother Jeff and his daughter Lily busy at work. Lily helps out every summer and does a good job. Back of CJ.

a gallon of fresh clean blueberries - and they are all mine! (Mike doesn't eat many of them)

Instead of starting the dehydrator with blueberries today seeing as it stayed nice out I was working outside instead.  The berries are washed and I will start that process tomorrow. Also the plan is to make fresh muffins and a cheesecake with blueberry topping.

Tonight I will get back to work on a Dear Jane  Block – number 8 I believe it is I prepped it last night so it is ready for stitching.  Last night I got to work looking through the Red and Green Applique blocks and picked out two that I will start prep work on.  I have the patterns traced out on to freezer paper and will need to get those pieces cut out and then I will glue baste the design down so I will not need to bring the overlay with me on the trip – just no room for something like that.  After I get these two blocks glue basted down I will look and see if I want to do another 2 blocks to bring also – sometimes they really go quickly.  I still need to draw the quilting lines on the small quilt I plan to quilt on the road also.   Too busy!

More Blocks

by Karen on May 25, 2010

in Dear Jane - "Insanity Revisited", family

I got another one finished last night and then another one during the day today:

Row 12, Block number 8 - another easy one - because tomorrow it is a doozy!

Row 12, block 9

Block number 10 (L-10)  is a wild piece – 42 pieces I believe and a lot of Y seams.  I might get to it tomorrow or that one might wait until Friday – we will see.

Thursday I am off to see my mom once again.  I am helping her get “lifeline” set up.  That is the company that helps older people stay in their homes longer taking care of themselves.  It makes them feel more secure.  One wears a necklace like pendant that has a button on it – if you fall or need immediate help you push the button and it connects you to an emergency number where they have your information already saved on their computers – they know where you live and can send you help immediately.   I told my siblings I would get it set up and take care of the monthly payments.   We are dividing up the yearly amount and all kicking in an equal amount to help mom out.  I tell you this is once again a great time to have a large family – 10 siblings dividing up something like this comes to about $42.00 a year for each of us – very affordable and we have the safer feeling of being assured that mom can get help right away if she falls and not be laying on the floor without being able to get to a phone.  Mom has not fallen yet and so we are glad of that but better to think of something like this and have it in place before a fall does happen.  We all need to think of things like this as our parents get into very old age – this will extend the time that mom can maintain independent living.

Recovery!

by Karen on May 12, 2010

in family, quilts

I tell you I think old age is getting to me :)   First I was sick for 2 weeks with a bad cold, then I was out of town for 4 days constantly on the move, I feel like I need a whole week to recover!!  I am so tired.  Yesterday it seemed like I did nothing but lay around, this morning I was cutting grass and cutting some saplings that have overgrown in my wild garden area and I’m exhausted!!  I need the rest of the afternoon to recover.

Late this afternoon I am meeting two Arkansas quilt blogger’s for pizza.  This should be interesting.  I will blog about it tonight or tomorrow.

I took a lot of family snap shots while I was visiting but I know they won’t mean anything to most of you but I do have a few family members popping on here from time to time so I am going to post a couple anyhow.

One day one of my many, many nieces met my sister, mom and I at the shopping center for lunch and a little shopping. This niece is my little sister's oldest child and her name is Culea she was home from college for a couple days but is now in Europe on a school trip. That is my mom in the photo with her.

My brother Larry's "little" fire pit - the heat of the blaze drove most away from it!

why is it the ladies always tend to gather in the kitchen and the guys outside? This is just some of the many, many women in the family. 2 nieces, 2 sisters in law and two of my sisters.

part of the family.Red shirt is brother Mike supervising the barbecue being done by brother Larry, next to him is Larry' s son in law Sheldon and Meranda - Larry's daughter. In back of her is my nephew Dominic, sitting is a nephew John with the pony tail and another in law Josh (a nieces husband)

The second to the newest baby in the family. This is 3 week old GeGe being held by cousin Kristy. GeGe is my brother Pat's grandchild. Pat's s- son Tom & his wife had a baby boy one week after this one was born but he is in California so no picture of that one. The mother of this one is Pat's s-daughter Jasmine.

GeGe's older sister, 3 year Trinity with kitten

sister Vicki with our brother in law Rusty's horse (he has 4)

some of the nieces and 1 great-nephew on the trampoline

So many more photos but as I say they are family photos and I have many many shots of so many children you wouldn’t believe.  As family gatherings go for us these were all small.  On Friday evening 24 of us met at a buffet place for supper.  On Saturday we met at our brother Larry’s house and 32 gathered.  On Sunday afternoon at my little sister’s house 26 of us made it there.  Right now counting all of my nieces & nephews, sisters, and brothers and our mom, all of the in-laws, all of my siblings step-children and step-grandchildren,  we have 81 members in our family – I Think!! it is hard to keep track — now you see why I have stopped making baby quilts for family – I can’t keep up.

Now I will be back to quilting and creating – I hope.  No more plans for any trips or family gatherings for awhile now.  We have the next six weeks or so for working on the yard and the house before hopping in the motorhome for travel.

Today is a cold, dreary day.  We have had snow flakes spitting off and on all day.  It is the type of day where you really don’t go outside unless you are really and truly an outdoors person or if you need to run and errand – like go exercise (which I did).   Now though it is time to just sit back and enjoy the inside and hope tomorrow will be warmer.  I will tune in to the Olympics sometime today or this evening to see how it is going, I haven’t watched it today yet.

Yesterday we ran to Little Rock to meet up with daughter and her hubby to go to the Arts Center – the exhibit was nice but much smaller than I thought it would be and no gold and glitter among these Egyptian pieces.  All pieces were more of the ceramic and bead jewelry type of items and a couple of mummies.  Everything was great to look at although my husband and I both thought that the cards all of the information was written on could have been larger – is age creeping in here :) I hope not!

When we got done with the exhibit we left the kids (kids to me – not to them they are in their late mid-30′s) and headed over to Sam’s Wholesale and  Barnes and Nobles for a quick look before we left for home – wouldn’t believe the weather – snow flying everywhere – and it had been in the 50′s the day before – it was melting as fast as it was hitting the ground so no worries about travel.

At Barnes and Noble I always look through the quilt magazines to see what is new.  Now and then they will have an overseas magazine and I always look through them to see what is going on in the quilting world away from the states.  I found a great one from New Zealand — and the best – it had a quilt border in it that I love and I think I will use that one for the Little Brown Bird quilt instead of the one that comes with it as it is one of the main parts of the quilt that I thought was just a bit too fussy for my taste. (saying that I should actually mention although I love the quilt I find a lot of it a bit too fussy for my taste and I intend to change it a lot – when I get done it most likely won’t even look that much the same as the original as I am planning on substituting some blocks for others that I have found and making some of my own design also).    The magazine I found is simply “New Zealand Quilter”.

this issue has such a simple quilt on the front of it I was surprised - most magazines tend to put something a bit flashier on the cover. I'm glad I opened it up to look at it and found the border inside.

The is the border I liked. It is from an award winning quilt by Margaret Matthews (2007) called "Roses for Me" and in the magazine it was the final of a 10 part series. I'm so glad I happened to pick this issue up, it has the pattern pull out included.

So that is news on the quilting part of my day (yes I have been busy with my applique border and I have 1 1/2 borders left to do).  Today was a baking day also.

Blueberry, Banana, Walnut Muffins

1 cup of quick oats
1/3 cup oil (I use canola)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 small carton of vanilla yogurt (6 oz)
1/2 cup milk
1 mashed banana
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
2 tablespoons ground flax seed
1 cup blueberries

Mix all ingredients together except the blueberries.  Stir them in after all is mixed.  Bake for about 25 minutes at 350 degrees.  Makes about 21 small muffins (this depends on the size of your containers).

some of the muffins - as you can see I use a variety of containers, the ones in the back are the aluminum foil toss away and the red ones are microwave/oven proof silicon rubbery things :) I found these awhile back and wanted to give them a try and they work great. You kind of just pop the muffins out. I had six more baking when I took this picture and they are in a muffin tin.

I have very large blueberries frozen from my little brother's berry farm as you can see in the photo - a couple berries and you have enough in each muffin! I have only about a cup of frozen berries left from the crop in June.

my afternoon snack - my very nutrious blueberry muffin and a cappuncino - of course and went and spoiled he nutrious part by having some chocolate afterwards :) can't be perfect LOL

ACHR1002I started making this coffee cake about 35 years ago!  I can’t believe it but I have made it for every Christmas during those years.  Sometimes by myself – when the girls were too young to help – then with the assistance of the girls.  I believe there has a been a time or two after the girls got married that they sent their husbands in the kitchen to see how it was made and to help!  Now here it is this Christmas the first time in along time that I have made it totally by myself once again.  Mike was in and out of the kitchen taking photos for me as my hands were too covered with flour to do that too :)

This recipe if you do a search on line has many different versions.  The recipe I use came with the first Bundt pan that I bought – it had a little booklet of recipes and I used all of the recipes for awhile – I used to make cakes a lot!  This cake Potica is a Slovenian nut bread.  It is pronounced “po – tee – zah”

The recipe:

Potica

the cake:

1 cup butter
1/2 cup milk
2 packages dry yeast
3 eggs, separated
2 1/2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar

Filling:

2 cups chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup chopped dates
3/4 cup milk
1 cup sugar
reserved egg whites

Heat butter and milk until the butter is melted.  Cool to lukewarm (I use a candy thermometer to 110 degrees).  In a large bowl dissolve the yeast in the warm water and beat in egg yolks one at a time.  Blend in to the cooled milk mixture.  Stir in the flour, salt and sugar.  Beat until mixture is smooth and creamy.  Cover the bowl and refrigerate overnight.  The following day blend walnuts, cinnamon, sugar, dates and milk in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stir until thickened.  Let the mixture cool a little bit.  Beat egg whites until stiff.  Slowly add the 1 cup of sugar.  Fold into the cooled walnut date mixture.

Cut the dough in half, dust with flour.  Roll each out to make a 18 inch circle (or if you like a rectangle it makes no difference).  Roll the dough thin – but not too thin!  Top each piece of the rolled out dough with half of the walnut mixture and spread to within an inch of the edge.  Roll it up jelly roll fashion.  Place in the bundt pan one piece at a time and let them overlap.  Let rise for 30 minutes and then bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees – bake for 45 minutes minutes.

Baked for 45 minutes - the top will be a little brown but it doesn't matter as it is on the bottom when you put it on your cake plate. Yes sometimes by overlapping the two pieces of dough you get a little lopsided cake but if I don't care - it is going to get eaten rather quickly anyhow!

Put a light glace of frostening on the cake when it is still warm so it will drizzle down the sides - unless you really want frostening and want to cover the whole cake. I just like it light.

It looks like we will be spending our Christmas by ourselves this year – the first time since we spent our first Christmas together 37 years ago!  The weather is undependable this year.  We have had so much rain the past two days that there is flooding in some places of Arkansas so much so that some of the interstates south of Little Rock are closed in sections.  Tonight the temperatures are dropping and we do not know if we will have ice or snow tonight.  Right now the forecast is to have 1 to 3 inches of snow by morning.  It is not raining or snowing right now.  The roads are wet though who knows what kind of shape the roads will be in tomorrow.  But because of the weather our daughter and son in law in North Little Rock have decided to play it safe and stay home.  They – or we – can make the trip to see the other when the weather improves.  I’ll just have to make sure that I save some of this coffee cake for them until we see them.  I might have to put their cookies in the freezer to keep them fresh enough also!

I hope all of you have a very happy and safe Christmas.  I have enjoyed so much this past year all of the friendships made through people stopping by my blog and leaving comments which lead at times to more mail being exchanged and look forward to more of the same in the new year. The weather is so bad this year in a lot of the county so don’t drive if you don’t have to!
