Knitting

imageYes I think I will give it a shot again.  I just read on Irene’s blog about some tube socks that she is knitting.  I thought you know –I think maybe I could make a simple pair – no fancy stitching just plain for practice.  Then I did a little searching to see if I could find more patterns and I came across Mary Anne -Miss Woolly Knits on her side bar she has very good tutorial on tube socks.

One more thing to keep me busy while traveling.  I will pick up a circular knitting needle and some sock yarn on our travels and keep busy – I will let you all know how it goes Smile

Wrist Warmers

by Karen on January 3, 2011

in knitting/crochet

My dear friend Regina gave me skein of some nice fine wool yarn a couple months ago along with some really skinny tiny wooden knitting needles because she knew I wanted to try to learn how to make a pair of socks.  Well I finally gave up on the socks – they are beyond my knitting skills!

But after looking at several pair of wrist warmers that I received as gifts from knitting/quilting bloggers a couple years ago I thought I would give them a try. I just used the basic single crochet stitch (I do not crochet fancy – just basic stitches). I do not know if I will be able to wear them for long periods as wool sweaters and scarfs make me itchy but I thought I would make a pair and see what happens.  Wool socks do not make my feet itching so I thought maybe I could use these – maybe my hands don’t get itchy either.

I got started on them a couple days ago and here they are!  I still have a little yarn left over and thought I might see if there is enough leftover to make another pair for one of my girls – they always have cold hands too.  you can’t see in the photo but I have an opening on the sides to stick my thumb through – more maneuverability for typing and stitching.  Now we will see if my hands stay warm enough when I am cold so that my fingers don’t get cold too Smile Thanks for the yarn Regina! I love the recipe for the bread that I made last night.  It baked up really well.

Honey-Oatmeal Wheat Bread

2 cups warm water (100 to 110 degrees)
3 tablespoons molasses (I used Blackstrap)
1 envelope active dry yearst
3 cups flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup regular oats
1 cup granola
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 cup honey
3 tablespoons olive oil

combine the first 3 ingredients and let sit for 5 minutes.  Beat the yeast mixture with 1 cup of flour, honey, and oil at medium speed until well blended.  Gradually add the whole wheat flour, oats and granola until a soft dough forms.  Turn the dough out onto the floured board and knead in the rest of the flour.  If too dry put a couple tablespoons of water onto the dough and keep kneading it until it is smooth and elastic.  Cover the dough and put in a warm area to rise until double for about an hour or two.  Punch the dough down and divide in half and form into loaves.  Place in two greased bread pans and let rise again for about 45 minutes to an hour or until doubled in bulk.  Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. (I found this recipe in a Southern Living Magazine last year)

I finished my sweater yesterday.  As I had mentioned I don’t like the way it turned out.  The sleeves are way too long, and my arms are thin so the sleeves are way too bulky.  It kind of bunches up under the arms so is not comfortable.  I didn’t like how the neckline turned out so I crocheted a neck on it but it was too wide and gaped open so I braided some yarns and strung it through it so it could be pulled tighter :)   I doubt I will wear it but it was a good learning experiment!  It is just too big and bulky in the arms to be comfortable and like I say the sleeves are too long and not tight enough to push the sleeves up and keep them up!

I cut my face out of this photo because I had a really weird look on my face :) you can see how long the sleeves are - it doesn't look bad for a first attempt in my opinion - and I would wear it and maybe I will from time to time, but the sleeves just aren't comfortable.

I made it out of cheap yarn because it was an experiment so I didn't waste any money. I think I will stick with scarfs, wrist warmers(fingerless gloves) and maybe try a cotton sleeveless sweater for summer instead! The sleeves really screwed it up for me.

On the weather topic - I took this photo first thing this morning - a big 6 degrees outside and next to the door it was only 62 in the house - the heat pump is working steady and I have the oven on the automatic cleaning cycle as it needed to be cleaned and it helps heat the house for awhile today too. I find winter is the best time to clean the oven! It is up to 9 degrees now but will stay very cold today and again tonight and tomorrow - I think it should get back into the 30's on Sunday.

coldIt is so sunny out one would think it was much warmer outside than it is.  23 degrees today with a wind chill of who knows what, tonight will be cold as well, Monday we should be back to normal! Possibly down to 10 or lower – like about 6! for tonight and the next 2 nights.  Much colder than normal for here.  I think the newsman said it was about 15 years ago that we had temperatures this cold.  The state of Florida is having some record low temperatures also and I have a feeling we will all be paying more for our oranges and orange juice for awhile – strawberry crops will be hit also.  What happened to global warming?

The pile of 4 patches keeps growing – I have 250 squares now pressed and squared up to the required 3 1/2 inches.  The circles as well are coming along, I have 160 of them done.

my box of 250 4 patches - getting there and if I stuck with it for long I would be done!

For my "Insanity Revisited" quilt, this is block 12 from Row 9. This one was another one that was a little hard to deal with the tiny pieces, it is not perfect - but it is done and won't be re-done!

I have bread raising to bake later. If it turns out I will post the recipe – I added some things so who knows :)

My sweater is in the final stages!!  I might have a photo of it tomorrow.  I am working on the neck – I didn’t like how the neck line turned out so I am crocheting a “turtleneck” of sorts on to it!  You know me, I always seem to have to change or add something to just about any pattern I have – even my beginning to learn how to knit sweater.  I was already done basically when I decided I didn’t like the neckline.  I would have had to knit a turtle neck to add to the sweater and thought really it would look good crocheted so I’m doing that instead.  I’ll let you all know if it turns out!  I do not think I will ever be a knitter — but I like the feel of the yarn going though my fingers and find the knitting  (or crochet) soothing somehow.

I have the background fabric ordered for the Red and Green Applique quilt that I showed you all a photo of awhile ago so I will be starting that one soon.  The Little Brown Bird on the other hand I think will be taking a back burner on the project list for awhile.  It is such a fancy quilt that I haven’t quite made up my mind completely to tackle it.  It is so pretty – but yet so fancy that it is not quite “me” if you know what I mean.  I need to think some more on it.

I do want to finish all of my four patches and circles before I start the red/green quilt — and I have to wash all the red’s and greens first that I plan to use and I think I will use the Retayne solution for color set also — I want to make sure I have no bleeding.

When I ordered the background fabric for the red/green quilt I also ordered the background fabric for the Star Crazy pieced quilt that I am going to make.  That one is a BOM so it won’t be taking away all my time from other quilts so I should be able to keep up with it and will start the first month blocks as soon as I get the fabric in.

santaclaus6I actually made a little progress today on the circles and patches.  I have 40 circles appliqued and 63 4-patches put together.  Not moving very quickly with that – but there you go.  Progress will be made slowly.  After all I never said I could make a quilt in a day or a week or even a month for that mater!  I like to enjoy it and take my time.

I have put in some more work on my knitting and the sweater front and back are almost complete – so a bit of progress there.  The purl stitch is coming more easily now and is “flowing” better.

It has been raining all day off and on.  More to come tomorrow.  Start off the day warm in the morning and temperatures will drop all day and we have a possibility – that is “possible” snow flurries by evening.  I just hope we don’t have ice!

The only thing left for me to do before Christmas is to make my Christmas coffee cake.  The yeast dough gets made in the morning and sits all day in the refrigerator (a cold rise – weird I know most need warmth to raise).  In the evening I put the whole thing together and bake it – then we enjoy it in the morning for breakfast and several days after that.  It warms up nicely in the microwave and taste best warmed up.  If I remember I will take photos of it and post the recipe.

santaclaus15Who can resist chocolate chip cookies! Be truthful can you eat just one :)   I know I can’t.  I’m trying the same recipe I always use this evening except half of the chips are mint.  Well be a different taste – but one I am sure I will love.  I use the recipe on the Tollhouse chocolate chip package.  No changes just what is on the package.  You can use a variety of chocolate chips – or butterscotch or whatever kind you like.  I do add walnuts in mine.

A little work done has been done on the Christmas Baltimore Album quilt but not a lot.  I have been working on too many things at once, once  again. At least a little more is done but it is a long way from being done.

I have the back of the sweater knitted – I might wait to post another photo of it until I am completely finished with it.  No photo of it today.  The Dutch Treat quilt is coming along nicely.   A lot of my time has been spent on quilting it this past week.  There are 36 plain blocks in it and 36 reverse applique blocks.  Right now I have 19 plain blocks left to quilt and 20 applique blocks left.  Just about half way finished!!

Do most of you find that you work on more than one project at a time or do you concentrate on one project?  I understand working on just one if you do this mainly for a business and have deadlines but if you do it just as your creative outlet do you have a hard time working on one quilt at a time?

I couldn’t believe the weather today – high 50′s!  I came out of the fitness center and was so glad I wasn’t in a heavy sweater or sweatshirt – it was long sleeve t-shirt day – the sun was shining, no wind, a really nice day.  Of course according to the evening news it will be 20 degrees cooler tomorrow!!  Northwest Arkansas is already in the 30′s and here it just went under 50 and it is 6:45 PM right now.

I want to thank everyone for the birthday wishes to my mom.  It was so nice celebrating 85 years with her.  The years fly by don’t they.

388137060_RZ4gY-ThYesterday I spent the whole day home.  I did manage to go to the fitness center 3 times this week so that is a start at trying to get back into a good routine.  I have to work harder at it thought – because – this is baking season in my house.  I can’t seem to control myself – I say I am not going to bake as much as I used to for the holiday season and then once I get going I start making more.   I am doing good though here it is December 12th and I have only made my second batch of cookies.  Some of these cookies are put in the freezer and will be put in a decorative Xmas tin for sharing with someone special who has no time for baking this season – (yes Mel they are yours – enjoy)

Ginger Cookies - nice and crunchy, rolled in sugar.

Ginger Cookies - nice and crunchy, rolled in sugar.

Ginger Cookies

4 1/2 cups of flour
4 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup sugar put aside in a bowl

In a large mixing bowl beat the shortening on low speed until it is softened.  Add the sugar, eggs, and molasses.  Add the dry ingredients and mix well.  Shape into the size ball to make small, medium or large cookies. For instance if you want giant cookies use about a 1/4 cup of mixture.  If you want smaller cookies like the ones I have pictured above make walnut size balls or a little larger.

Roll the balls in granulated sugar and place on greased baking pans.  Bake at 350 for about 14 minutes – check for browness.  If you over bake the cookies will be crunchy, I did some for 16 minutes to have crunchy cookies and some at 13 to 14 minutes to have chewy.

The walnut size balls will give you about 4 to 5 dozen cookies.  Large will give you about 2 dozen.

Last night I got another of the “Insanity Revisited” blocks finished.  This was an easy reverse applique block that only took an hour to complete.  I am not doing daily work on this quilt and lucky if I do one or two blocks a week.

Dear Jane, "Insanity Revisited" block 5 in row 9

Dear Jane, "Insanity Revisited" block 5 in row 9

I was asked by several people about the quilt pattern that I mentioned the other day that is located at Bunny Tails shop – the one with the yo-yo’s –why did I say I would applique circles instead of making yo-yo-s?  The only reason I can give you is that for some reason I just don’t like yo-yo’s!  I don’t mind making circles and applique especially when the circles aren’t super tiny.  We all have our likes and dislikes :)

I finished my Christmas Tree skirt yesterday and put it under the tree.  I don’t think I ever want to work with velvet again!  Velvet looks pretty and feels pretty but I don’t like working with.  I don’t think you can really see the stitch work from the photo – my Janome doesn’t have a lot of fancy stitches as it is a lower end model.  I just picked one of the zig zag type of stitches and used a yellow variegated thread on the top.

Christmas Tree Skirt -- still needs binding around the outside edges and I will do that before I put it away with the decorations.

My sweater is growing – the back of it that is.  Actually the back is almost finished.  I had found an easy boxy type of sweater on the internet and have been following the pattern pretty much and also using one of my own sweaters for measurements.  I found when the pattern had told me to start decreasing for the under arm area would have made the sweater too short for me as I am long from the back of my neck to waistline.  I didn’t think it looked long enough so before I started to decrease I got a sweater out of the closet to measure it and went with 2 more inches!  Good think I checked.  I will do that for the sleeves to.  In the photo the sides have rolled under a little.  I have used big needles so this is not a real tight stitch.  We normally only have short cold spells in Arkansas so I didn’t want to make anything real heavy that would only be used now and then.  This is a loose knit that I will have a tank top under it to keep the cold air out if needed.  This is regular cotton I think, I know it is not wool – I would have to look back to the package to see.  I can’t wear wool for more than 30 minutes or so before I start to itch.

Back of sweater. So far it looks good to me - but what will it be like when I finish it! Will I ever wear it - we will see how it fits in the end.

ACHR0833I always loved to make Christmas cookies when I was a teenager and then later when I had my kids and husband to bake for.  Over the years I have tried many recipes for Christmas and somehow we all ended up with favorites that were baked every year.  This year however I decided it was time to go against tradition and  try some new recipes.  Earlier this evening I baked the first of the new Christmas cookies – lets see how well they go over this year.

This one might become a favorite of mine.  Chocolate Chip Biscotti with Almonds and Cranberry’s. (easy, easy)  Recipe as follows:

sliced, baked biscotti - great with the coffee drink of your choice or hot chocolate

sliced, baked biscotti - great with the coffee drink of your choice or hot chocolate

Chocolate Chip Biscotti (recipe is in the December 2009 issue of Better Homes and Garden magazine)

1 pouch Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix (see I told you it was easy)
1/3 cup butter or margarine softened
1 egg
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup toasted chopped hazelnuts (I used almonds as that was in my pantry)
1/2 cup cherry-flavored dried chopped cranberries (I used regular dried cranberries as that was in the pantry)
1 cup chocolate chips

Make cookie dough blending cookie mix, butter, egg, flour, nuts, fruit and the chocolate chips.  This will be a stiff loose dough.  Roll half of the dough at a time into  8 x 2 1/2 inch rectangles.  Bake at 350 for 25 minutes.  Let cool for 15 minutes.

Cut each rectangle into 3/4 inch slices.  Place slices cut side down on a cookie sheet.  Bake 10 minutes on each side – check half way through baking time and adjust time if needed – you want them light brown.

Cool completely and store in a tight container.  My recipe made 18 slices – I did not have my tape measure out and some were larger than others.  If you want more – measure!  I adjusted the baking time as I found it needed more.  That is why I say check for brownness – ovens vary.  Also they had a lot more chocolate chips in them and I thought it was way too much so I cut in by a half a cup.

Pancakes

by Karen on December 7, 2009

in Baking/cooking, Interesting Links, knitting/crochet

ACHR0832Yes no quilting photos today.  I made these pancakes yesterday morning and loved them – thought I would share.  I like waffles and pancakes – not real often but about once every week or two I make some up.  I keep the ones we don’t eat in a zip lock bag and then just heat them in the microwave when I want them.  I quite often use the same recipe and make waffles instead.  I got this recipe out of the “Taste of HomeCookbook.  It is chock full of recipes, many that I have never tried.  I would like the book for the desserts too but I try to not make many desserts anymore so feel it would be a waste of money and too tempting if I had it!  (now I see when I put the link in here that the dessert book is on sale for less than half price — no I am not going to order it – I will resist!)

Brown Sugar Oatmeal Pancakes

Brown Sugar Oatmeal Pancakes

Brown Sugar Oatmeal Pancakes:

1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons quick cooking oats
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup white flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup buttermilk

Mix it all up and make your pancakes :)   this makes about 12 pancakes the size shown in the photo.  I like these pancakes with butter and home made apple butter spread over the top.  Mike likes them with syrup.

Everyone have fun quilting today.  I plan on working on the Dutch Treat quilt and knitting.  Oh by the way — I decided to unravel the shawl I was making and make a simple sweater instead.  I felt I was catching on to the knit/purl routine good enough.  I found a very simple pattern on line and I’m going to give it a shot and have made good progress on it already!

Dutch Treat top

by Karen on December 5, 2009

in Dutch Treat, knitting/crochet

christmasbells1I finished the Dutch Treat table topper – I had briefly thought of adding a border then decided no – it did not need it.  It is 32 x 36 inches and that is the size I want for the table.

32 x 36 inches it will have the darker fabric for the backing and the binding.

32 x 36 inches it will have the darker fabric for the backing and the binding. This is a far cry from the 169 reverse applique blocks that I had planned originally to make but I am glad that I decided to just make this smaller version and be done with it. If I ever decide to try again the book will be on the shelf with the rest of them. I use all but 2 of the applique blocks that I had made - I will most likely put those two on the back some where to use them.

In between other things I pick up the knitting now and then and knit/purl a row or two before I set it back down. I am beginning to be more comfortable with purl stitch although it still doesn't flow as easily for me as the knit stitch does. This will be a shawl when it is finished.

Tomorrow I will post photos of all the items to be finished in the year 2010 – I don’t really think I will get done but I must control myself not to start more projects than the ones that I have planned in my head and on the shelf already started.  There is enough here to keep me busy for two years easily – now if the magazine companies would just quit showing me so many more ideas for quilts I would be fine – and all the on line sites available too!!!  Really 2010 has to be the year to get some things finished – I will be quilting two quilts at a time all year – one on the big frame and one on the hoop!
