Three Days of Ice

Wow, we are still not above freezing temperature!  I didn’t even go outside yesterday.  I will today – I have an appointment (yearly mammogram) and the plows were out scraping the roads clean – Mike tried to see if he could get the vehicles out of the driveway and he could – so today to town I go!  I have gotten done with a bit though and that is good – progress on quilts is always a good thing.  Today maybe we will get up to or above 32 degrees I sure hope so – by the weekend we might be up to 50! major melting all week long although nights are to still be in the 20’s for most of the week so well freeze again at night – yuck!!

More work was done on Carousel – still taking it slow with it – haven’t really been able to get into it for hours and hours – but slowly it is getting there and only 5 hours of work on it actually!  I have trimmed the sides away from the areas that are finished – you can see I have three whole white block to do and then 1 corner and  4 sides – those areas go faster than the blocks on the inside.  (and still need to do the prints of course)

Do not have a photo but I have gotten done with 3 of the borders of applique on Uncommon, Common Bride – just the stitching around the applique pieces – next I will do the corner blocks on that border of the stars and then grid .

What have I been reading the last couple of days – Executive Orders by Tom Clancy – Mike had gotten his newest book on kindle and said something about it which made me realize I hadn’t read one of his in years so I picked this one off the shelf as it was the last in the Jack Ryan series that I never got to – it has been out for years – I had just stopped reading his books for some reason.

Yes that is right 874 pages and the print is not super huge although in this photo it looks big enough it actually is smaller than it looks.  After trying to hold this book in bed the first night I was reading it I said to heck with it and ordered it for my kindle LOL – it was so heavy I couldn’t hold it comfortably – what a wimp I have become Smile  I am plodding through it, skipping a little here and there as I always do in the technical parts (they bore me) and then on to the more interesting parts! The kindle will be so much easier to bring to the fitness center to read this week – I have to get back to exercise after being home 3 days in a row and I don’t remember why but I didn’t exercise on Thursday last week either – lazy!  I don’t care for audio books – I am the type that likes to go back a couple pages every now and then to re-read something and I find it hard to find the right spot in audio.

I decided with my mini packs that I have been collecting for a good part of the year I will be making a tumbler quilt with 2 inch tumblers – charm quilt.  This will be hand pieced just for fun (yes I know some think I am nuts but those of you that like hand piecing totally get me) Smile  – I might sew the long rows together by machine but haven’t decided on that part.  These three pieces are laying right side down as they would on freezer paper – this is Inklingo – I printed out the 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece on regular paper to see if I would be able to easily iron the mini’s on to it and I will be able to get 12 on a sheet – print then cut the rows with rotary cutter and they will be ready for hand stitching in between other projects like I am doing with the hexies.  I think for arrangement I will do light tumbler/dark tumbler.  This quilt will have about 2,500 pieces in it I think and hopefully they will all be a different fabric!  (the lines you see on the paper is what prints on the fabric – seam line and cutting line makes hand piecing so easy)

Birds continue to flock to the feeders – I will need to see if I can get the feeders loose today and refill them although they have been happy getting the seed off the ground anyhow. – that is a woodpecker on the wood pole – he is pecking around at it I have a pair of them hanging around this one has the red crown – Downy (?) male  the little hanging water dish is completely covered I will need to clear that off

Carousel looks good so far. Do you plan on doing the same quilting on the prints as you’re doing in the white areas?

I’m getting more and more tempted to try Inklingo. 🙂 It looks pretty good for hand piecing and even probably for machine piecing some designs (like ones with set-in seams). I like the fact that it has your sewing line on there so you don’t have to hand mark things.

Karen, your Carousel quilt is one of the prettiest patterns I’ve ever seen. Can’t remember where you found/purchased the pattern. We are 84 degrees here this week in Southeast Georgia! I am truly enjoying your snow pix.

Beautiful picture of the red cardinal against the rose bush, even if it is covered in ice. Be safe as you drive today.

Love that pic of the red bird! So pretty. I was wondering if you were going to start a new hand piecing project. You seem to enjoy it so much! Love how your carousel quilt is coming along.

We don’t have the snow, ours is rain and high 30s for temps. Add to that some 95% humidity. Cold!

I stayed in all weekend too!

Hi Karen had to drop in and see how you were going in the freeze. So glad temps are finally going up for you. Love the photo of the red cardinal, I have a wee wooden one I bring out each Xmas and sit on the side board to remind me of the lovely 4 months we had living in Canada many years ago. Love the quilt you are quilting at the moment it looks so clean and fresh. I have a Kindle also and I must admit it is much easier to hold than a book but I do love curling up with a book now and then. I was trying to read Dan Browns latest book but I could not get in to it so it is back on the shelf for another few months . Cheers Glenda

We were lucky. We just had a little bit of fun weather and now it’s all cleared up. Couldn’t miss 2 hours in the dentist’s chair! Please let me know what you think of the book. It was the last Clancy novel I read because it made me so mad. I love a long book but that one didn’t do it for me.

Loving your machine quilting on the carousel quilt.. if I could only limit my machine quilting I might like it… unlike you I seem to only progress one project at a time.. okay right now I have 3 in progress… but that is unusual… and I am devoting all my time to only one project. Love how you printed the Inklingo… I have often thought of trying that as I love handpiecing and all the lines being there.. will all those little charm pieces stick to the freezer paper??? Also are you using freezer paper sheets or a roll that has been cut into 8 1/2 x 11 sheets… will watch and see what you show us as time passes 🙂 the birds are loving the food you are leaving them and they seem to like your yard too! How nice… I love hearing the birds in my own backyard and watching them play and interact. Maybe they will eat food from our feeder some day…. enjoy reading.. kindle or hardback you have them both now! Have a warm evening and be safe when you go to town! Kathi
