Quilting and Piecing

So cold! it was 10 degrees yesterday morning – I don’t think it got above 32 until late afternoon – I think this year we are having a lot more than our normal 6 to 8 week winter here in Arkansas – this might just be a whole three months or longer!!

That block I showed yesterday from the Granny Square quilt bugged me enough that I did take it out and change that square around –  and I got one more made – I now have 12 blocks Smile

Between yesterday morning at quilt group and off and on a couple times during the day I have one more row almost finished for Diamonds are Forever – I have to put the white hexies all around the bottom Diamond and then start attaching it.  I must admit I made a mistake two times in placement on this row and had to take it apart to fix two times!!  You have to really watch the layout of this pattern to get these right!  I would have had to take a couple squares off the design wall so laid it on the floor instead.

More done on the Uncommon, Common Bride – moving right along on this one!  With the middle already done it seems to be going so much faster than my quilts on the frame normally do and of course it is much smaller than most I put on the frame.  The reason it seems faster though is that I am working on it almost every day and working at least two hours at a time on it.  I am not trying for tiny stitches on this one at all – the white on white fabric is just too tough!  It is the toughest white on white fabric I have ever dealt with.  I just want this one to be done – I will never work with white on white fabric again that has this much design on it for hand work – just too hard to hand quilt.  Keep in mind that I started quilting it in the middle – I used about 5 or 6 different white on white fabrics the middle had a different one that was not tough to quilt – otherwise I most likely would have stopped right at the beginning and machine quilted it – I think I could have done it well enough to outline the applique and then do straight lines – but it was too late by then!

I tried to get a close up of the design that is on both of the wide borders – I had to use the flash but I think you can see it well enough to see what I am talking about.

Stopping in for my morning inspiration! You’ve done it again – made me want to stop checking in with my blogs, grab my shower, and get to work!! I can see why that white-on-white would be difficult to work with. I’ll remember!! I collect white-on-white and tone-on-tone fat quarters or quarter lengths for my scrapping.

Love those squares!!!! I’m hoping to get some stitches in this weekend…. Wind chills are rough — a quick run to the grocery store and I’m in.

Now I’m worried ~ lol. I have some white on white I was planning to use for embroidered blocks in a baby quilt. I’m wondering if I will have trouble two times ~ embroidering and then hand quilting. 🙁 I’ve washed it and it does seem pretty sturdy.

I agree with your about hand quilting white on white fabric–NEVER again! It’s probably best that you fixed your Granny Square block now instead of having it be an irritation later.:)

I had to go back to your previous post to see what bugged you… I agree, if it had been me, I had redone it too. 🙂 Great progress on DAF and quilting. I didn’t know white-on-white is a problem to hand quilt… will remember that.

When you were talking about fixing the granny square I thought you were talking about the blue stripe. It took a little for me to see what you were talking about…lol

Your granny squares and hexagon diamonds are wonderful, but it is your applique quilt that makes me swoon.

I took one look at that white and thought “Oh, yuck!” I’ve had some miserable times handquilting through white on white. Mom and I just picked fabrics for a baby quilt, and went with a plain/solid white instead of a patterned one, for that very reason. At least the quilting will show up in it.
