Big Stitch

First Happy Birthday to Melanie – our oldest daughter – born 41 years ago —  time sure flies by doesn’t it.  She was born as the clock struck midnight– the doctor told me I could chose the 23rd or the 24th – she was due the 23rd so that was what I chose as I had been in labor with her the later part of that day for only 6 hours so it ended the day just right.  I was only 20 and Mike had just turned 21 three weeks before we had her, I can’t believe how the years have gone by so quickly.

I am so pleased with the baby quilt now that I picked out the machine stitching that didn’t look good and have started to quilt it with big stitch perle cotton thread.  This method really does go fast but I have yet to really have heard a good way to describe this method of quilting which is kind of a combination between embroidery and quilting.  This quilt is taking on a whole new look with this quilting.  I know I didn’t show my horrible machine quilting with it, I hadn’t gotten around to taking a photo of it when I started in with the seam ripper taking it all apart!  But believe me – it didn’t look good at all.

I will spritz the blue lines out later but for now here is what it looks like.  I am using brown Perle Cotton #12 thread.  I used it on another quilt last year and had gotten way too much not being sure how much I needed so I have plenty to get this quilt done too and most likely will still have some leftover.  I am linking to Kathy’s Quilts: Slow Stitching Sunday if you wish to see more slow stitchings!

We had another nice day yesterday and maybe another nice one weather wise today before it starts to get chilly again?  Yesterday we planted an apple tree that arrived I had only ordered it about two weeks ago – we planted it right away as this is the right time in our zone to plant them.  We should have gotten one years ago – well actually we did – years and years ago but they died (several apple, peach and pear) and we never replanted.  This time I got a 2 in 1 apple tree – it has red and yellow apples on it and it self pollenates because there are two kinds of apples on it – also disease resistant.   Now well it grow and produce apples in our lifetime Smile  we will have to wait and see on that.  I didn’t take a photo but I will when we get some leaves on it so I can hopefully show it off a little bit.  This is what it looks like when it gets apples on it.  It grows to be 10 – 15 feet tall and it is about 4 feet right now and looks like a large twig!  Good thing trees grow fast in Arkansas.

    Happy birthday to Melanie!

I love the stitching on your baby quilt! Adorable … so adorable! Worth the decision to hand quilt it, if you ask me. I’ve only heard that stitching style referred to a “big stitch”. I’d love to give it a try someday, but I fear that my fingers will keep trying to shorten the stitches! I’ve only hand quilted, so my fingers are trained to make smaller stitches. 😉

Happy Birthday to your daughter! And I agree, the years have gone very quickly. Our oldest will turn 35 this year, and I can hardly believe that either.

    Running stitch on the quilt?

    Happy Birthday to your daughter.

Happy Birthday to Melanie! The baby quilt is coming along so beautifully. Great choice for quilting. I will always love that POTC quilt and the more you show as you get it quilted, the more smitten I am. I only finished 3 blocks before my travels, but will keep on working on it when I return!

I love how the stitching adds another design element to your quilt… it just draws you in and makes you want to reach out and touch it! YUM!

Love the big stitching you are doing. I was wondering if you use a hoop to do it, some do and some don’t. Your crosses quilt is going to take a while, but I love what you are doing.

Time does fly. There are lots of February birthdays. Your big stitch quilting is wonderful. This will be a nice scrap quilt.

I am so glad the quilting with perle cotton is going so well. It looks great. Perle cotton is my favorite for hand quilting. I am visiting from SSS.

Happy Birthday to your daughter! I love your stitching on the baby quilt. It makes it look so snuggly and wonderful. I first heard Kim Diel mention big stitching at our guild about 5 years ago and I know she mentions it in her books. Your stitches look lovely.

    Both projects are gorgeous! 🙂

Time does indeed fly! My eldest turned 30 this year, that really kind of freaked me out! I remember how much I freaked out when I turned 30!

Loving the baby quilt, it looks wonderful!

Happy Birthday to Melanie! Just love the baby quilt. I need to learn how to hand quilting. The apples seems to be delicious. Happy stitching week!

I guess this means I’m your oldest follower, because my daughters are 51, 50, and 47; I really should be that young, shouldn’t I?
Do you buy the Perle cotton locally? I’d like to give it a try, but probably would have trouble; just as Kathy said, I’ve learned to take small (almost) stitches.

This quilt is looking great! Well worth all the unpicking.

  • Sue Daurio Feb 23, 2014 @ 20:10

LOVE the patchwork crosses! The perl cotton looks wonderful. That is going to be so soft and cozy!

  • Melanie Feb 23, 2014 @ 21:05

Beautiful stitches. They are so even. I love the handstitches— worth the extra effort.

You were just a baby having a baby LOL! Happy Belated Birthday to your little girl — and what a fun birth story. Your big-stitch quilting is looking great — I love big-stitch quilting too, although, after fine handquilting, I find that it’s hard to get those stitches big enough!
