Patchwork of the Crosses – Again

Y’all are going to get tired of this one Smile but thank you to all of you who love this quilt and tell me so – it will be one of favorites as well – I don’t think anyone would be able to talk me into selling this one –

This is the area I quilted on Thursday night – I am trying to quilt every night again – or almost every night – it is so much easier to quilt than that last one was!  And I’m not putting in near as much quilting so that helps too.

And just to show more of it because I love it so much

Now you all might think I am crazy but I started to machine quilt the baby quilt and I was not happy with the way it was turning out at all.  I need to remember that with 4-patches  as tiny as these to press the seams open – the seams are so thick and so many of them that even with using a “jeans” needle it is not doing well – at each seam it is dragging and taking really tiny stitches compared to other spots where the stitches are the right length and it looks bad.  I am ripping it all out and will hand quilt it instead!!   I hadn’t gotten a lot done so it is no big deal to me.   I will do big stitch quilting instead and I know I will love it better – with the way it was looking right now I wouldn’t even want to give it away – also I was in too big of a rush and didn’t pull the backing as tight as I should have and had several puckers.  Pictures after I get it started in the hoop.

Oh, my goodness, that quilt is just gorgeous!! Thanks for the tip about pressing seams open. I’m new at machine quilting, so appreciate all the ‘help’ I can get!

I really like how you have chosen to quilt this. It makes for an interesting pattern on the back. I’ve always debated about whether or not to press seams open or to the side. I’m concerned about fiber migration through the stitches if the seams are opened, but that has never happened to me. I press open pretty much all the time now, which is good should I ever be struck by the desire to machine quilt! Take care, Byrd

I always change my stitch length to 3 for machine quilting, sometimes even 3.5 and that prevents getting caught and tiny stitches. Also I use a size 80 topstitching needle, works better getting through thick areas. Sewing too slow will also jam up at seams.

I love this quilt too. Honestly, I would love to watch your progress even if it wasn’t beautiful. Lol All your quilts are beautiful though and it’s enjoyable for me to watch the progress.

Just wondering if you used a walking foot on your domestic machine? It really helps to stop those squinchy little stitches! Love your hand quilting. It’s truly beautiful.

Too bad about your baby quilt, but I know you can do the big stitch quilting super fast! POTC is incredibly lovely and the stitching texture is only making it better.:)

Are you straight line or free motion quilting the baby quilt? I also use top-stitch needles.

Hi Karen! Another beautiful quilt of yours although this one has so much work, my God!!. I wouldn’t dare to sew one of this in this life at least jajajajaja. You are a so hard handworking quilter. Congratulations, love!

I am a huge Craftsy fan so wanted to put in a plug for anyone who hasn’t tried it! Of course, I live in the Denver area so heard about them right away. They send things promptly, their classes are awesome, and their customer service is great! Can’t wait to see your quilt when it’s completely quilted!

I would NEVER think such things about anyone who chooses to hand quilt. Granted, machine quilting goes much more quickly, giving one time to make more quilts, I just think that there’s something quite special about a hand quilted quilt. 😉

Pat I love Craftsy too – I do wish though that they would ship their products overseas so that customers could get the fabrics and yard – I’m so glad that they can get the classes though no matter where they live
