Back in 1959 there was a strong earthquake – 7.5 on the scale that happened in a remote area west of Yellowstone – the area had campgrounds and cabins – the earthquake hit at night around 11 to midnight.  28 people were killed and 250 escaped to higher ground – the lake had 20 foot waves – it washed away cabins by the lake, campers were buried under rubble from the landslides.  Now days there are numerous campgrounds around this area and plenty of new cabins and condos.  And this is where we are tonight – in one of the rustic campgrounds near the lake.  This area can also be known as “Quake Lake” to some.  Here is some information from photo’s that I took at the visitor center.

More next post – too much to fit in one.

(edited: 9Pm 9/9/14 – we are set to leave the Tetons in the morning the 10th – believe it or not a snow storm is predicted on Thursday.  We were planning on leaving here in the morning (Wednesday) anyhow but had intended to move to a campground in the mountains still only about a 100 miles from here – but because of snow coming in on Thursday we will be moving instead further east and stay in a town RV park in Casper for two days – right now intending to leave there on Friday morning but if need be we might stay a third day – we will see – it looks like Casper should be in the 50’s by Friday so should be able to leave then – we will see!!  Snow can you believe it!)

Very interesting! I can’t imagine what that must have been like but definitely very scary. I sure hope some of that cooler weather heads our way. We have been in the mid nineties all week.

So jealous of the snow – and the cooler weather! Still hot down south in Alabama!

Wow — snow already! It must be our cooler than normal year continuing. Thanks for all the info about the earthquake — so interesting! Hopefully, with monitors, etc., there will be warnings if that were to happen again?

I remember the quake. I was a little girl and had been afraid and gone into my parent’s room to sleep that night–crawling onto the available space at the side of the bed. When there was a shaking, I fell off the edge of the bed onto the floor and woke up my parents with my crying and complain about being tossed from the bed. I was grumpily escorted back to my room. But, the next morning my parents realized I had had a good reason to be afraid. They hadn’t felt the quake. So that’s one of my earliest memories–of the bed shaking and tossing me out.

You are touring some of the loveliest areas, and places of my childhood. Thank you for sharing!

Thimbleanna, this is normal weather out here 🙂 We get snow from September through the end of June most years, and my dad has often seen snow on his birthday – July 10th, though that is more unusual. (We’re in Pinedale, Wyoming, 77 miles southeast of Jackson Hole.

we arrived in Casper about 4PM it was 72 and now only two hours later it is about 60 and the temp is dropping – they say tomorrow 1-2 inches of the wet white stuff.
