Busy Snowy Day

We didn’t get near the amount of snow they were saying on TV that we would get – we ended with maybe 2 1/2 inches of the fluffy white stuff.  The sun came out so bright and shiny all day and the roads clear off on their own it got up close to 40 degrees – the drive way of course is another story but we did get the car out in the afternoon and went to the fitness center to work out so I should be able to get it out again today to do the same.  Very cold night last night but now we are on our way to warm up – so nice!!   Here was the back yard this morning before the sun came up. About half of this is melted already!

Here is the area that I showed when the snow first started on Wednesday late in the afternoon.

I got one more star finished yesterday.  I was kind of hopping from one thing to the next yesterday.  17 out of 40 – close to half done.

011

I got my cutting table cleaned up and things stacked up.

014

Binding done on two sides of Kansas Twister.

And I settled on zigzag quilting for the border on Granny.  I’m using a lavender color thread – mainly because I had two spools of it on the thread shelf and I needed to use it for something so decided to use it on this.  I am linking to A Quilting Reader’s Garden today and Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

I am not a math person – the way I do zigzags is draw a fairly straight line down from the point of the Prairie Points and then another straight line from where two meet up – then I use my one inch ruler and draw a line to the straight line

017

Then again from the next side.  Here and there I might have to fudge slightly to get it straight but it will work out in the end.  Start at the top and work your way down until you can’t do any more.  These lines are like I say an inch apart and yes I was tempted to do them 1/2 inch apart and then I reminded myself that I do not want this quilt to take a year to get done so stay with the inch.  If I really want more quilting in it sometime down the road I can always go back and add more – but an inch apart should be fine.  I am still thinking ahead on the next step and maybe I will have the next areas figured out by time I roll it down.

I hear a lot of people got the storm worse than us and my sister and brother out in Maryland got about a foot of the fluffy white stuff.  I hear Kentucky is a mess – one of my readers is from there Kristie at the Cowgirl Quilter – hope you made it through the storm ok!

Oh, I love the little buttons on the prairie points on Granny’s Got Style!! They are adorable. And I love the zig zag border quilting, too. Your Kansas Twister turned out great.

I’ve been away for a couple of weeks and still getting back to “normal.” Amazing how long it takes to settle back in after a vacation. We had temperatures in the 40’s in Alabama but that was still nearly 70 degrees warmer than home. After we got home we had some warmer (30s) days, but this morning it is back to 15 below zero. Ugh! The weather forecast is for gradual warming, with maple sugaring weather starting next week. Hope springs eternal!

I’d forgotten all about the cute little buttons on your prairie points – adorable! I just love the zig zag quilting you’re doing. I approach quilting in much the same way you do … I thought about stitching 2 lines of quilting through the logs of the log cabin quilt I’m making for T#3, but he’s a very typical 7 y.o. boy, so I know that quilt will be washed and dried – a lot. I’ll save the intense quilting for any heirlooms I might make some day down the road. Besides, he’d like to get this quilt sooner rather than later … and I too would like to get to the next quilt sooner rather than later … so many quilts, so little time! 😉

I love your math, that’s my kind of thinking! LOL I can’t wait to see your Granny square all quilted, it’s beautiful!

We got about 3 inches and that was plenty!

Awww….so sweet! KY got hammered again! We ended up with another 12″ at my house but some other areas got hit so much worse. Our county also ended up with a ton of flooding. There are two ways to my house, the shortest route is very steep and just not passable even with a 4WD. The long way in has a culvert that has been washed out. So either way hubby is riding the 4 wheeler a mile out to the vehicle for work! 🙁 I’m sooooo ready for SPRING!

I just love your hand quilting! Your zig-zags are perfect!

I saw your link on Angie’s blog and had to come over to see what you are doing with those zigzags! I love it, and your explanation of what’s going on. Your stars are great, too!
