Happy 4th of July everyone in the states – if you are picnicking I hope you have good weather. I hadn’t got off to a very good start on the applique quilt called The Caswell Quilt that I had gotten started on back in April. I made one block then, got another glue basted then nothing with it while I finished up some other quilts. Well this past week I finally got busy with the applique on that block and finished it last night.
The two blocks together
I ran into a problem with the Tumblers on the frame for pin basting – one side wasn’t laying flat – I took it off the frame after putting pins in all but that one side and I will finish it up on the floor next week – just not going to tackle that this weekend. I hope to get started with the machine quilting on that one later in the week as well – but it might be the week after – I have ordered a new sewing table so the Juki will sit in flush with the table and be the right height – the other machine will fit in it too. Should arrive later in the week.
I did decide to get the next hand quilting quilt on the frame though and the Lemoyne Stars is now ready for quilting. This quilt is much smaller than the last quilt that was quilted – Granny’s Got Style which was a whopping 104” square. The Stars is about 77” square I think – I would need to measure again to be exact. I was going to do some stenciling with flowers in the corners and a weaving type of pattern – but I was having a lot of problems with it – I was going to have to stretch it out in some areas to get it all to fit right so right now I am changing my mind on it and think things over – I might go to a grid and maybe flowers in the corners. I’m not sure what I am putting in the small plain squares in between the stars. I hate the stencils when you have to squeeze things in or stretch the design out. Right now all the blue lines are spritzed out and I’ll start over again later today.
Binding on Granny has not started either – I’m really not with it this week! Disorganized.

Your Caswell blocks look so nice, the colors blend so well. I don’t like having to alter the stencil markings either. I just try to use stencils that I can adjust easily. Look forward to seeing what you come up with on the LeMoyne Stars. Have a good day!
LOL not with it my foot! : ) I got tired just imagining wrestling with tumblers and it’s issue then getting the stars in and ready …
Caswell blocks : lovely 🙂
Love the organized sewing place!!! Happy Independence Day!
Hope you have a happy 4th!
Your blocks are beautiful!!
I have trouble with border stencils as I just don’t have the eye for stretching/contracting to make the design fit … and I’m a mark as I go kind of gal (often because I’m not always 100% sure what I’m going to do with the borders until I get to them … I quilt in a hoop so I have that “luxury”). I’m confident that whatever you decide for your borders will look fantastic.
Your Caswell blocks are lovely! Applique blocks are nice summer project. I don’t use stencils for this very reason. I prefer to use my copier and use my quilting design books. That way I can make them fit the quilt. Templates are easy to make and I know they will fit. I know you will work it out as the quilting on your quilts always seems perfect for the quilt.
Happy 4th of July to you! It is a cloudy day here in Virginia…and we are predicted to have some rain later on…we attended a block party celebration last night, so we aren’t grilling out today.
Sorry the stencils didn’t work out…but I know you will come up with a perfect solution for the quilting on the LeMoyne Stars quilt.
I know you will like having the table for your Juki to sit in. My Featherweight has a card table that has a cut-out specifically for the sewing machine; having it sit flush with the table surface makes such a difference.
The finished Caswell block is beautiful. Cannot wait to see which block you do next!
your blocks are gorgeous Love them, also really love that quilting frame of yours with the wooden holder for your goodies keeps everything off the quilt! you have a great room to play in!
Ooh, your Caswell applique looks gorgeous! I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues with your Tumblers. I never know how to mark for quilting and that’s why I usually chicken out and do something boring that doesn’t need marking. I’m looking forward to seeing how you quilt your Lemoyne Stars!
I just love your Winter Wonderland!! I’m doing mine in blue and since it’s so hot here in West Virginia I hope to finish this summer!!
SO much going on in your sewing room – I love your Caswell blocks!
Love the fabrics you are using for your Caswell Quilt. The two blocks are beautiful. You continue to make so much progress on your quilts. Our holiday was quiet but there was a lot of gardening done.
Drooling over how cool your Caswell blocks are all looking! I am glad you did your background fabrics with the small print on these too .. looks very cool!
Can’t wait to see how you address that gorgeous border on your Stars quilt with your beautiful hand stitches!!!
I bet Granny gets bound soon and washed… she needs to be enjoyed too!
Have a blessed da
I love your Caswell blocks, there just gorgeous. It’s a quilt in my future too, so I’ll watch your progress with interest.
Have a great week

I am about to start a William Morris queen size bed quilt. Do put the wadding on the back of each individual block and hand applique them together? Then put the blocks together and just add the backing fabric? Thank Janine , South Australia
